GOODTIMES 2 New Irish sensation for INXS YARRAWONGA CHRONICLE/COROWA FREE PRESS - NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2011 - ISSUE 24

Even after a week of solid rehearsals with INXS new lead singer Ciaran Gribbin is still pinching himself he will be fronting the Aussie supergroup.

When Kirk (Pengilly) plays the guitar intro to New Sensation I’m still bouncing up and down like I did when I was young,” the 35 year old Irishman said. “It’s like a fairytale, I never dreamt in my wildest dreams I would be here.” While the announcement only a few months ago of the latest replacement for the late and great Michael Hutchence may have many INXS fans thinking “Ciaran who?” Gribbin is no stranger to INXS and the band. In November 2009, through mutual friends in Sydney, Gribbin met INXS band member and songwriter Andrew Farriss and they immediately hit it off and have kept in touch ever since. They met up again over Christmas 2010 while Ciaran was on a family holiday in Australia. Finally this year they decided to get together and quite simply ‘write a couple of songs and see what comes out of it.’ They wrote more than just a couple and their friendship and mutual respect was firmly sealed during

this very creative and productive ten day session and a commitment to ensure they keep their new writing partnership going. To help achieve this Ciaran has relocated to Sydney with his wife and new son for six months. He recently completed the recording of his first solo album but has decided to put this release on hold while focusing on the rest of 2011 in Australia.

A childhood fan of the band Gribbin is a Grammy nominated songwriter/performer who has worked with major rock and pop artists including Madonna, Paul McCartney, Snow Patrol, Groove Armada, Paul Oakenfold and now INXS. In 2009 he left Irish band Leya and embarked on the path of a solo artist as Joe Echo and in the past three years he’s played countless shows and festivals with many artists including The Script, Paul McCartney, Stereophonics, Powderfinger, James Morrison and shows in Australia with Paolo Nutini. His songwriting skills may have been a basis for his friendship with Farris but there is no doubt his settled domestic situation cemented their relationship, particularly when you consider the ‘challenges’ for band members when they are on tour. His voice cannot be underestimated either, his powerful tenor perfectly suited to the soaring rock anthems that Hutchence made famous. In fact, many thought the song Tiny Summer, released on the band's website, had Bono as vocalist before the announcement it was Ciaran was made. “It's just the way it worked out,” Gribbin said “ I had been working for years to be a rock star and then began focusing on

my songwriting. Andrew’s (Farris) heart is in song writing and the relationship grew. We wrote songs over a week and recorded some demos and when the other members of INXS heard them they asked why couldn’t he be the new singer.” It’s been a whirlwind since and last Friday when I spoke to Gribbin, he was walking along the northern beaches of Sydney with his wife and child, soaking up the sun and contemplating the beginning of the INXS tour which kicked off on November 3 in Peru in front of a 12,000 crowd before heading to Argentina two days later to perform in front of 30,000. “It doesn’t get much bigger than this, it’s unbelievable,” Gribbin said. “It’s a tough job.” Gribbin said the audience can be assured the INXS bands hits will be well and truly covered with passion and he expects the crowd at Mulwala to really let their hair down. “Last Christmas I spent two months travelling around Australia, from the great Ocean Road right up to Brisbane and Tamworth. There are a lot of similarities between the Irish and Australians. I’m a country boy myself and I can’t wait to perform in the country towns.”

Rodeo stars destined for Yarrawonga Aussie cowboy Ben Jones, a star of the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) tour in the USA, will return for another crack at Aussie champion bull Outback at this year's Yarrawonga Rodeo on Wednesday, December 28 at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds.

Yarrawonga Rodeo will also feature for the first time a Legends Bull Ride event where former Australian champions over 50 years old will face off against each other. Country music star Shea Fisher who is currently in the USA will also sing for the crowd. The 23 year old from Portland Victoria was a barrel racer on the rodeo circuit before pursuing a singing career which led her overseas and to a record deal. Yarrawonga Rodeo is part of the popular Christmas run of rodeos which offers cowboys points to qualify for the all-important National Finals Rodeo held in January which guarantees no holds barred competition from cowboys, bulls and broncs. Apart from the non stop action and entertainment in the arena throughout the evening there will also be a sideshow alley, rides for the kids and full catering with the bar and barbecue provided by the Yarrawonga Football Netball Club.

Country singer Shea Fisher. Gates open at 4pm, action starts at 7pm, entry is $25 for adults, $15 for pensioners, $50 for a family (2 parents and 2 children U12), 6-17 years $15, under 5 free. The idea of running a fishing competition for the club was first conceived by club president Brian McKee in early 2000. This idea was put to the committee with the support from all. Almost overnight the club was up and running with the idea and “The Big Catch” was born. This event was held in late February 2000 attracting only 44 competitors. From that day on the direction of the competition and the date of the event has changed to make it into what it is today, the “Cod Classic”, Australia’s richest freshwater fishing event.
