Speech Pathology Week 2011 Did you know that this week (August 21-27) is Speech Pathology Week across Australia? A local speech pathologist, Olga Komadina, shares a little about her role in the community.
Can you tell us a little bit about what speech pathologists do? Olga: Speech pathologists are professionals with training and expertise in providing intervention for communication difficulties and ultimately they provide clients with an effective means of communication to allow them to participate fully in all aspects of their life.
Are there other speech pathologists in this region? Olga: Yes. We have speech pathologists servicing the public system, private, education and disability sectors in Yarrawonga.
Olga: It depends on the type of communication difficulty. When working with children I mostly see clients who have difficulty with saying sounds correctly, acquiring age appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures, stuttering and voice disorders. Some speech pathologists specialise in the area of swallowing in infants and children. With the adult population, speech pathologists usually see clients who experience communication and swallowing difficulties as the result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, degenerative illness or voice disorder. Do you aim to help people to communicate verbally, or do you also employ other modes of communication? Olga: We definitely work on all modes of communication, as required. For example, for a child who is having difficulty understanding verbal instructions – I will make up pictures for teachers to use in the classroom to supplement their auditory message with a visual message, thereby increasing understanding for that child. Another example is an adult who has suffered a stroke and has lost the ability to read and write. We could then work with this client in helping him or her regain this ability.
Do you work with children, adults, or both? Speech Pathologists play an important role in the early identification and management of communication difficulties of reading and writing, as well as verbal communication in both children and adults. In order to write a message we first need the words to say and in order or read a message we first need to have a knowledge of the words that we are about to read. Speech pathologists also work on phonological (sound) awareness and research strongly supports the role of oral language and phonological awareness in the development of literacy skills. In what way have you been able to help children in Yarrawonga to improve their speech and language development? Olga: Sometimes it is just a matter of teaching a child how to say a particular sound that they have not yet acquired. If this sound was not explicitly taught to the child they may never acquire it. If the sound is not developed correctly some children will then have an incorrect representation of that sound and will then also spell it incorrectly. With other children I need to focus intensely on developing their vocabulary and grammar. I have seen children who did not know any verbs progress to be able to speak in sentences containing nouns, verbs, adjectives
and adverbs. I also work with children who have a speech disorder which is more difficult to treat called Childhood Apraxia of Speech - where children experience difficulty joining sounds together to form a word. I have had children come in to therapy only being able to say 3-4 words to months later being able to say hundreds of words and combine them in phrases and sentences. Masonic Musings I’ve been making mistakes again. I write these notes in longhand and those lovely lasses at the Chronicle type them out for me; but my writing is not always easily understood. I was born at Cobaw, not Cobaus. Cobaw is a small rural area situated on the Deep Creek, not far from Lancefield, on the Lancefield/Kyneton road. In those days Cobaw had a State School built of blue stone and a general store. I think that the Hall family still farm there, and I have no doubt that the Crozier
family are still there. The last time I saw the old school it was being used as a hay shed. Pity. I think that the area is the only area in Victoria’s north where one can catch eels. The Deep Creek finally joins the Maribyrnong River so the eels have a direct line to ocean waters. So, I’m the Kid from Cobaw. No big deal. Lodge 103 has received news that our Foundation Master, William Jones Stitt, was a veteran of the American Civil War. We knew that Stitt came to Australia from America and it was only about 1983 that a
perusal of his death certificate for historical purposes proved that he was born in Wales in 1849. He landed in Victoria in 1871, aged 22 years, his profession being that of tailor. William Jones Stitt was initiated into Freemasonry at Warrnambool but then moved to Gippsland and joined a lodge at Sale. He then moved to Walhalla and became Worshipful Master of the Walhalla Lodge in 1880. In 1882 he moved to Yarrawonga where he married Miss Lydia Pitman, a distant relative of that well known Mulwala personality, Murray
Toms. William Jones Stitt is buried in a family plot in the Yarrawonga cemetery. When more detail of his military history becomes available we will pass it on. The only other Masonic American Civil War veteran in this area, as far as we know, was Jacob Hoffmann who settled at Beechworth and whose sons served in World War I.
