At a council briefing session early last year, the Lions Club discussed elements to be developed on the site including a jetty or boardwalk along the foreshore, a public toilet block and car/van parking space. Director Infrastructure Services Aaron Drenovski said in a report to the March council meeting that the site had long been recognised as suitable for a park and is recommended for development with the Yarrawonga to Bundalong Foreshore Plan. “Council installed the Yarrawonga Artworks, later named by the artists ‘Mulwala Dreaming’ at the site last year,” Mr
Drenovski said in his report. “The Lions Club has requested that council contribute $50,000, primarily for the (road) works on the Murray Valley Highway. This amount could be included within the 2012/13 budget.” Councillor Jessie McCallum said the Bathumi Reserve development was a wonderful project. “It is not going to cost council very much money,” Cr McCallum said. “The Lions Club came to us about three years ago to talk about taking over this piece of land and make it a beautiful visitors spot. We have two wonderful artistic shards at the spot now and this work the Lions Club want to do will enhance the area, the community and become a favourite spot to visit.” Cr McCallum said she understands the Lions Club is also considering a pavilion to be built on the site. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a council,” she said. “The
Lions Club gives many hours of work plus funding to the community. I would like to thank the Lions Club personally, they have shown great vision.” Cr Brian Keenan told council it was particularly fortunate the former Yarrawonga Shire had the foresight to purchase this land. “This is the only reason today we can consider this idea,” Cr Keenan said. “We are also fortunate the Lions Club has given an undertaking to do this development.” Council voted unanimously to authorise CEO Gary Arnold to make any minor changes necessary to the Record of Understanding between the Lions Club of Yarrawonga and Moira Shire Council in order for the Lions Club to sign the agreement. The councillors also voted unanimously to consider the proposal to provide the sum of $50,000 within the 2012/13 budget to fund this project.
