LOCAL CLUBS
Sporting ground grant applications open Local sports clubs who are looking to weatherproof their facilities are encouraged to approach their local councils about applying for a share in the Victorian Government’s latest round of the Sustainable Sports Ground Program.
extra support to help clubs deal with the impacts of climate extremes,” State Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell said. “The Northern Victoria Region in particular has suffered the full range, from drought to floods, “This funding, at a total in recent times. The fundof $2 million, will provide ing in this program will
provide clubs with the cash-boost they need to better develop sustainable community sporting facilities that will be better-equipped to deal with future climate challenges.” Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty said the Victorian Government was proud
to invest in the sustainability of local sporting facilities. “By working together with local clubs via councils we can support higher levels of use and participation at local sporting facilities, whatever the weather brings,” Mr Delahunty said. “From water recycling
and storm water harvesting to drought resistant turf and the installation of synthetic playing surfaces for sports such as soccer, hockey, lawn bowls and tennis, the Sustainable Sports Ground Program helps local sport to not only survive, but thrive. More people will be able to enjoy the health bene-
fits of getting more active, more often, and clubs can cater for members all year round.” Ms Lovell and Minister Delahunty encourage local clubs who are looking to better protect facilities from weather extremes to contact their local council, develop a proposal and
have council apply for the funding on their behalf. Up to $100,000 is available for each project. Applications are accepted via local council. Interested parties should contact their council for deadline dates and visit www.grants.dpcd.vic.gov. au / call 1300 366 356 for further information.
GOVERNMENT GRANT
clean up
to Provide Free Calls from Mobiles to Lifeline Lake Mulwala clean up thanks $18.2M As $18.2 million Federal Government grant to provide toll free calls from mobile phones to Lifeline from anywhere in Australia will help in the fight to prevent suicide according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.
Some of the volunteers who joined James Watt in in his clean up of the lake foreshore on Sunday.
Sheryl Watt and her son James would like to thank the Yarrawonga and Mulwala communities for supporting their endeavours to give Lake Mulwala a tidy up during the drawdown of the lake.
“I wish to thank the Lions Club of Yarrawonga for their help,” Sheryl said. “Also a thank you to Yarrawonga Community House and all the shops that put James’ posters in their windows. I would like to thank Paul from the water board
and Chris for donating the bins. A big thanks to Leanne Clarke, John from the Yarrawonga Op Shop, the people from Murchison for helping in the clean up and finally to my son James who did a great job.”
The funding, which takes effect from July 1, 2011, will be delivered over three years and will help Lifeline to respond to more calls from people seeking support services. Every year more that 114,000 calls to Lifeline’s national crisis line are made from mobiles with more than 40 calls coming from people at high risk of suicide on a daily basis. Mr. Chester described the grant as a major step forward but warned there was much more to be done to tackle the
alarming rate of suicide in regional areas. “Making it easier for people at risk to receive assistance is an important initiative which was recommended in the Senate’s inquiry into ‘The Hidden Toll: Suicide in Australia’,’ Mr Chester said. “There were a number of other key recommendations including the need for a national suicide prevention and awareness campaign which should also be funded if we are going to make major inroads into this problem. “It is alarming that suicide remains a leading cause of death with over 2000 people dying each year and a disproportionate number in regional areas. “The lack of community awareness and stigma associated with suicide
can also be an additional burden in our community and we need to be able to talk about the issues in a responsible manner and make the necessary changes in public policy to reduce the impact.” Lifeline CEO Dr Maggie Jamieson has also welcomed the announcement. “We know that the costs associated with calling Lifeline from a mobile has acted as a significant deterrent to help seekers in the past,” Dr Jamieson said. “The financial assistance the Commonwealth is providing us will allow people to call Lifeline’s crisis line from their mobile handset with the knowledge that they can speak freely about their emotional crisis, without a looming future financial burden.” Mr Chester said the
funding would make it easier for younger people, who often rely on mobile phones, to access support services. In 2008, suicide claimed the lives of at least 281 young people aged between 15-24 years and was the leading cause of death for this age group. “There is a great deal more to be done to reduce the risk of suicide among young people in Australia,” Mr Chester said. “Suicide is a complex problem and all of the research points to a range of risk factors but there is no doubt in my mind that governments at all levels can do more to provide better support services and assist people at risk through measures such as this additional funding for Lifeline.”
