Moira Shire Councillor Judy Heather said waste skips located along waterways and throughout the Shire were for visitors and those passing by to dispose of the rubbish they have on them. “Unfortunately these skips are often filled with rubbish loads from residents’

homes, which is illegal dumping,” Cr Heather said. “It is disappointing that we have had occasions where old mattresses, couches and even a toilet have been illegally dumped.” The dumping of residential rubbish of any kind, including rubbish from a work site, at a public waste skip is prohibited. “People need to be aware that dumping residential rubbish at these skips is illegal and that anyone caught doing the wrong

thing will be fined,” Cr Heather said. Residents can dispose of rubbish through their kerbside collection while excessive volumes and large items, such as old or broken furniture, should be taken to a landfill site or a waste transfer station. Unwanted furniture in good condition and white-goods in working order can be taken to the Resource Recovery Shed at the Cobram and Yarrawonga Transfer Stations free of charge. Alterna-

tively contact can be made with a local second hand store. Moira Shire Council offers a range of recycling services and programs including kerbside recycling, ChemClear, DrumMuster and Mobile Muster. Report tabled on rates objections Rates were again a hot topic at the last Moira Shire Council meeting for 2010.

A report on the revaluation of properties for rating purposes was tabled in response to a joint petition by 57 residents of Bundalong received by council at its November council meeting. The petition by the residents of Bundalong stated they “object to the huge increase in our rates this year. We can understand if there was

Councillor Brian Keenan said as a former real estate agent he realises property valuations for rating purposes do not necessarily reflect realistic real estate prices. “There is quite a lot of dissension over valuations and rates,” Cr Keenan said. “We have had a lot of objections and we are following local government regulations in this regard. Property owners are aware they would not be able to sell their property for the valuation on their rates notice.”

Councillor Jessie McCallum called for greater communication between property owners and council on when property valuations were taking place. “I am concerned we only tell our residents they are going to have a rate increase when they actually get their first notice,” Cr McCallum said. “I am asking if can we give them some notice, let them know revaluations are taking place. We shouldn’t let any rate increases come as a shock, we should try to soften the blow by

communicating with our community.” Councillor Judy Heather supported the idea of notifying residents of the revaluation of properties and said council should advertise in the local media prior to revaluations commencing. “Council should advertise and explain why the revaluations are happening and encourage residents with queries to come to the council offices or contact a councillor to discuss this issue,” Cr Heather said. “Too often we as a council just react when people complain.”

Fire restrictions from December 20 Despite the recent rain Moira Shire Council has joined with the CFA in urging people to exercise extreme caution if they are going to light a fire.

“The lighting of any fire, other than regulation camp fires, will be investigated by the police,” Cr Keenan said. “Any person acting outside the law, who has no permit, fails to comply with permit conditions, or any other breach, can

expect to be charged and placed before the courts. The preservation of life and property is paramount; we will not tolerate either being put in jeopardy.” Anyone burning off is also asked to notify VicFire on 1800 668 511 to prevent the unnecessary turnout of CFA trucks. Each ratepayer and resident is requested to make it their responsibility to protect both their property and that of others by ensuring that their properties are properly cleared prior to the summer season. Black Bull and Silverwoods get a new home Golfers at the Black Bull course at Silverwoods will enjoy more roomy and comfortable surrounds next Easter when a new ‘temporary’ Pro Shop and Clubhouse are completed by local builders Hadar Homes.
