Pavement repair works at Bundalong VicRoads advises drivers that pavement rehabilitation works on the Murray Valley Highway at Bundalong between Plenty Fish Court and Austin’s Road will commence on Monday, November 21.
VicRoads is undertaking pavement rehabilitation to repair deteriorated sections of the Murray Valley Highway in Bundalong. Works will be completed prior
to the Christmas break to ensure motorists are not inconvenienced during the holiday period. A lane closure will be required at times, so drivers need to expect
short delays. There will be a speed limit of 40km through the work sites for the safety of the drivers but also to enable the road crew to move and operate safely.
VicRoads asks drivers
to obey the speed limits through work sites for their own safety and for the safety of the road crew.

“All firewood collection areas are marked by official signs and tape, and firewood can only be collected if the signs and tape are clearly in place,” he said. Mr Dobson said firewood collection areas are updated regularly on the DSE website: www. dse.vic.gov.au/firewood “The website features an interactive map indicating current firewood collection areas with a green star,” he said. “The exact location can be pinpointed by zooming in closely. A map of the selected area can then be printed.” “Alternatively, people can obtain up to date information by contacting the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186.” “Along with using only designated areas, people must also abide by maximum volume limits, only collect firewood for personal use, only take fallen timber and leave logs with hollows or that are growing moss or fungi,” he said. Other rules include:
Firewood within 20 metres of a water course must not be taken No standing trees, living or dead, can be cut or harmed in any way Chainsaws must not be used on days of total fire ban Avoid firewood collection on days of Code Red Fire Danger rating Drive only on forest tracks or roads Do not use heavy machinery such as log splitter, saw benches, tractors or vehicles and trailers with a carrying capacity over two tonnes. Mr Dobson said a firewood collection fact sheet was available on the DSE website. Permission, and in some cases permits, from local government is needed for the collection of firewood from roadsides under their management. VicRoads does not currently allow firewood collection on roads they manage.

Council’s weed worry Roadside weed infestation will be the target of an increased eradiation program funded by Corowa Shire Council with $40,000 from their rural roads budget.
Council resolved to shift the funds, from roads to weeds, after reports of a significant increase in roadside weed infestation this spring, possibly due to a better growth system and seed spreading by floodwaters. Director Engineering Services John Babbs reported the current weed program was unlikely to have enough sufficient funds to control the increased growth in noxious weeds. He said council’s rural roads fund had been largely preserved due to federal government restoration funding, making that money available for other rural issues. “An allocation of $40,000 for additional contractors to work with council in controlling noxious weeds might be prudent given the importance of council being able to enforce high standards of weed con-
Corowa Shire Council has allocated $40,000 toward the eradication of noxious weeds including Chilean Needle Grass. trol to all landowners and meet objectives of reducing the spread of noxious weeds,” Mr Babbs said. Corowa Shire Council
has received a total of $5.5 million in Natural Disaster Roads Funding to cover damage caused by flood events in Octo-
ber and December, 2010 and in February this year. The funding has resulted in almost 40,000 tonnes of gravel being spread between January and June this year, four times the amount of gravel used during a normal six month period. The allocation of disaster funding has enabled council to undertake the work with little reliance on its own rural roads budget. Council’s Noxious Weeds and Animal Inspector Patrick Minogue reported to council very large infestations of St John’s Wort and Chilean Needle Grass throughout the shire. He said due to the short growth cycle of both weeds there was a small window of opportunity to spray or eradicate the plants over the next six to eight weeks. Chilean Needle Grass is categorised as a Class 3 noxious week and has a legal requirement to be “fully and continuously suppressed or destroyed”.
CFA warning
Haystacks a fire risk in wet and hot weather CFA is warning the community about the risk of haystack fires this summer, following a fire at Yarroweyah last week which destroyed up to 100 large bales and is believed to have been caused by spontaneous combustion. CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said with the amount of rain the state has seen this year, coupled with some hot and humid weather, haystacks in sheds and outside could self-ignite. “Spontaneous combustion is the leading cause of haystack fires in Victoria. Stacks become dangerous when heating approaches about 70 degrees Celsius and can rapidly reach ignition point,” Mr Ferguson said. “Farmers should also be careful not to walk across the top of severely heated stacks as they could collapse inwards due to unseen charring in the middle.” CFA Hume Regional Manager Alan Davies said farmers who have had the bottom layer of
Local birds and the great bounce back
Wildlife Biologist Ian Davidson will lead walks looking at both wetland and woodland birds and their habitats in Corowa. Ian has worked as Ranger/Fish and Wildlife Officer/Ecologist for the Victorian government, ran a program helping landholders manage their native vegetation for Greening Australia in southern NSW and now runs his own independent environmental company. Along the way he has developed a good understanding of wildlife and their habitat needs and the perspectives of land managers throughout inland NSW and Victoria. He has completed his Wildlife Management Degree and has 30 years of experience in nature conservation and land management with a particular interest in birds. “Woodland birds have been in decline in southern Australia, including around Corowa, with a prolonged period of drought and
The Azure Kingfisher is one of many bird species that have returned since the drought broke. degradation or removal of habitat,” Ian said. “One of the most important places for woodland birds and their recovery of population numbers is along waterways and bush on private land. “Habitat retention and restoration on these sites can play a major role in arresting the decline in population numbers of birds and also in increasing the biodiversity of species in woodlands.”
He will conduct/ lead a bird survey with interested members of the public firstly at a wetland and then in woodlands along the Murray at Corowa to help people identify local birds and understand their habitat requirements. “Corowa district is blessed with a number of significant woodlands with good numbers of woodland birds including threatened species,” Ian said. “Sites include
Redlands Hill, Coreen State Forest and TSR including Round Swamp, Nulla Nulla Swamp, Lonesome Pine Forest, parts of Wangamong Creek, as well as many good private land blocks featuring different habitats. Unfortunately many of the roadsides in the district have poor bird populations because they are dominated by an aggressive native honeyeater Noisy Miner
their haystacks or rows of bales stored in paddocks inundated by recent rain could find the stacks may start heating, leading to mouldy hay which poses a real danger of spontaneous combustion. “Haystack fires also pose a great risk to properties because they can spread quickly into the surrounding area and often result in thousands of dollars of damages,” Mr Davies said. CFA Operations Officer Peter Brereton said that farmers should actively monitor haystacks for heat but be aware that this was only one factor in preventing loss. “Using a probe to check your stacks is a bit hit and miss and it can give you a false sense of security,” he said “It only takes one bale in a stack to heat and you can lose the lot,” “Farmers should aim to minimise risk at the time of baling and stacking - in particular by ensuring hay is fully cured
at the time of baling,” Mr Brereton said. To help prevent haystack fires, farmers should: Use a probe to test for heat and also look out for other factors including steam rising from stacks, mould or unusual smells or slumping of the stack. Allow for airflow by not stacking hay right up against the roof of sheds Store hay in multiple locations or stacks to avoid large losses if a fire occurs Never carry out work such as welding or grinding near haystacks Maintain fuel breaks around stacks.
