The Director of Engineering Services report delivered at the April 19 council meeting said preparations were underway for the installation of fluoridation equipment
into the water treatment plants within the shire and staff had been provided with the necessary training for the operation and supervision of the injection process. “Council’s engineering manager is having somewhat protected negotiations with officers of the department of health regarding the housing of the equipment,” the report said. “The department requests portable type equipment be
used but we reject this as it is considered that a more robust permanent housing be adopted. The cheaper portable type housing will undoubtedly be a burden on council in the future.” The report went on to suggest the installation of equipment and commencement of treatment could be expected by the end of the year for Howlong and Corowa and also Mulwala depending on a resolution to the is-
sue regarding having fluoride in the Thales water supply. Cr Bill Bott said the issue of fluoride introduction into the water supply should not be an issue at next year’s elections as the matter had been robustly debated and decided. “It’s only an issue if we allow it to become an issue,” he said. “The matter has been debated extensively and the decision has been made.”

Building activity increase Building activity in Corowa Shire improved significantly over the four-week period to mid April, 2011 with eight new homes among the 27 building permits worth a combined value of $M2.5.
And early indications point to another month of strong building activity according to council’s health and building inspector, Stephen McHugh. Of the eight homes, three were for Mulwala, in Lucan Street, Rose Drive and Bayly
Street, four were for Howlong and one for Corowa. Other approvals for Mulwala were extractive industry – sand quarry, Dick Plain Road; swimming pool, Binda Road; verandah, Sunshine Boulevard.
Howlong had 12 building approvals, Corowa seven, Mulwala six and Savernake two with demolition of dwelling and transportable dwelling on the same property in Telephone Lane.
