VFF to host Basin Plan meetings The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) will be hosting community briefings in Cobram and Shepparton on Wednesday, October 27 to provide members and the broader community with the VFF’s view of the potential impact of the Murray Darling Basin Plan and what the Federation plans on doing to protect farmers’ water rights. The briefing sessions will provide an opportunity for farmers and rural communities to find out exactly how the government’s proposed irriga-

tion cuts will affect them and how the VFF plans to defend their water rights. VFF Water Council Chairman Richard Anderson will chair the meetings and provide attendees with an analysis of the Guide to the Basin Plan; an estimate of the impact on irrigators of the recommended reductions in water; and an outline of the VFF campaign to bring balance to the plan. Member feedback will also contribute towards a VFF submission to the MDBA. The meetings are open to all farmers, rural busi-

nesses and communities. Further community briefings will be held in Echuca, Bendigo, Mildura, Swan Hill and Wangaratta over the coming weeks. Visit www.vff.org.au for full details.

Roundabouts have been causing a few headaches with some motorists seemingly unaware of the correct procedures when entering and exiting a roundabout. The Vic Roads driver manual states a motorist must always keep to the left of the central island and they must drive in the direction of signs and/ or arrows on the road before or in a roundabout. When entering a roundabout, a motorist must only give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout. When turning left, if there are multiple lanes the motorist must approach in the left lane and stay in that lane. They must indicate a left turn on their approach to the roundabout and keep the indicator on until they have left the roundabout. When turning right if there are multiple lanes the motorist must approach

Senior Constable Tracy Pierce urges all motorists to be aware of changed give way intersections and roundabout rules. the roundabout in the right lane and stay in that lane. They must indicate a right turn on their approach, and indicate left, if practicable, just before the exit they are turning into, keeping the indicator on until they have left the roundabout. When going straight ahead if there are multiple lanes, approach the roundabout in the left or right lane. Drive in the same lane through the roundabout. Do not signal

on the approach to the roundabout, but if practicable, signal left when exiting the roundabout. In the case of Give Way signs, one intersection in particular has been creating havoc, with some motorists apparently unacquainted with the changed give way directions. The Orr Street/Hume Street crossing was changed some time ago with motorists travelling along Orr Street towards Belmore Street now having

to give way to motorists travelling along Hume Street. Senior Constable Tracy Pierce said there have been several near accidents at this intersection in particular. “I urge all motorists to make themselves familiar with any changed traffic laws and street signs,” Sr Cst Pierce said. “Be aware, stay within the speed limit and keep safe.”
