Squash makes a comeback… ...and what is racquetball?
There has been a trend for new squash courts being built across Australia. Last year there were 10 centres built and there is more earmarked for the future, hopefully there will be some new courts built in Yarrawonga at the new P-12 College which the Yarrawonga & District Squash Association has proposed to the developers. The new courts would lend themselves to a whole range of sports as the internal walls would be able to slide out to make a huge activity area suitable for a lot of indoor sports for the school and community. Squash is a quick workout and burns more calories than any other sport. It was reported from the US business magazine Forbes, that squash was the healthiest sport of all in 2010. It asked fitness experts to score a selection of sports in four areas. Squash scored out of a possible 5 points, 4.5 for cardiorespiratory en-
durance, 3 for muscular strength, 3 for flexibility, the maximum 5 each for muscular endurance as well as calories burned in 30 minutes and 2 for injury risk (total 22.5). It was also reported in World Squash News that tennis legend Roger Federer played squash every week and he acknowledged the game is great for developing hand-eye co-ordination that can be transferred to other sports. Michelle Martin, triple world squash champion, acknowledges that if hand eye co- ordination is taught to a child from a young age, they will have that for life. So squash is back, with 20 million people now playing in 185 countries, but it doesn’t stop there. A similar sport is also played on a squash court, racquetball. Racquetball is almost in the same league as squash for fitness as the only real difference is the racquet size and ball size. This sport is a little easier to learn than squash and the benefits are just as high, a lot of squash players play this game as well, just for the workout. Squash and racquetball are for the young and old

and we have three courts on Benalla Road in Yarrawonga so come and enjoy them. Competition of all levels is about to kick off on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with Wednesday afternoon reserved for Junior Squash and Tuesday evening sees racquetball played on the courts from 6.30pm. Mondays and Wednesdays are squash nights and the organisers have seen a reflection of the new revival, as the last couple of competitions have had a lot of interest from around the town. “Wednesday night filled up and we had to start up another night on Mondays,” said Yarrawonga & District Squash Association President Vicki Martin. If this sounds like something you could get into, especially over the winter period where many outdoor sports are not played, come down to the courts on old Benalla Road and meet some new people or bring a friend. Yarrawonga Squash also has a facebook page for everyone to keep up on news and if you would like to find out more call Vicki on 57432843.

TOUCH FOOTY
Divisions 1 and 2 played out some cracker touch footy this week to mark the end of our 2011/12 season. The division 2 grand final tussle was between Touch n Go and All Blacks. In muddy conditions perfect for slide through tries, both teams put on a stellar show. But the All Blacks were too good in the end coming home with the division 2 grand final trophy, scoring 9 to 5. The trophy was presented to the young All Blacks team of talented boys and girls, who managed to stave off the more mature opposition’s strategies and experience. The battle for ultimate
bragging rights over the next 12 months was between Black Bull and last year’s premiers, the Lions. The division 1 grand final had all the ingredients for an entertaining game with half time scores Lions 5 to Black Bull 3. The final half saw the pressure being applied from both sides but Black Bull closed the gap and on the siren the scores were equal. Extra time was two 5 minute halves. Both teams brought their best tactics and mustered their last energy for the extended 10 minutes. The result saw the Lions win by two tries, 9 to 7. Well done to Black Bull for providing excellent grand final competition and congratulations All Blacks Jess Thomson and Hannah Clarke.
Lions Chris O’Neil.
Div 1 winner’s Lions.
Div 2 winners All Blacks. to the Lions for their 2011/12 Borderline Touch Football premiership. Two years in a row Lions! Most valued players were also announced and congratulations go to: Most valued female Molly Giggins from the Jets. Equal runners up - Courtney McDonald from the Lions and Meg Clohessy from Black Bull. Most valued male equal winners Dylan Robinson from the Lions and Terrence Jones from the Jets. Runners up Mitch Greer from Multiple Scoregazms. Special thankyou to all our referees who helped
run seven games each week from October to February. Sincere thanks to our tireless working El Presidente Dan McKee and fantastic committee members who all contribute their time and effort planning the season and helping each week. Final mention also goes to the Jets who qualified for the division 1 grand final, however, could not field a team, but who would have had Nick Gambi Gamble score 4 grand final tries himself if he was playing! Signing off, until season 2012/13.
