The Federal Government initiative allocates $175,000 to Corowa Shire Council, to be matched on dollar for dollar basis. The total $350,000 project is to be completed by the end of 2013 project and includes $87,000 for work at Lonsdale Reserve Mulwala. Corowa council has also allocated $21,000 from its capital funding for a water sprinkling system at Mulwala Apex Park. An order for the work has gone out to the successful tenderer, Gordon Gibson Nominees of Wangaratta for the work at Apex Park which includes the water-slide area. “We’re looking at a future with less water and
better use of resources,” council’s Rodney Wallace told The Yarrawonga Chronicle. “Council has let four contracts – three via the Summer Grass Program (Corowa Rugby Club oval, Corowa Tennis Club courts and Howlong’s Lowe Square number two oval) and one by council’s capital work program (Mulwala Apex Park).” Mr Wallace said extensive consultation has been undertaken with the sporting bodies. “Not everyone’s happy about having their grounds cut up,” he said. “But the timing of the work will be taking into consideration the sporting program of clubs.” Mulwala Progress Association’s Robert Purtle welcomed the grant funding from the Federal Government and Corowa Shire Council. “I think it’s great we’re going to get some money,” Mr Purtle said.
“We certainly need continuing communication with council to agree on a date and the exact type of work at Lonsdale Reserve to be undertaken. “We have a working bee before Easter, to do some clean-up work in preparation for the Summer Grass Program in due course.” Two other projects will be for Corowa - John Foord Oval and Ball Park Oval – involving an overall total project cost of $190,000 at Corowa. Howlong will receive $92,000 grant funding while Mulwala will receive $89,000 plus the $21,000 for Apex Park. Mr Wallace said the targeting of sporting and recreational grounds was a Murray Darling Board recommendation. “It’s about strengthening basin communities, with the 50:50 funding grant,” he said
