Cuppa for Cancer The best excuse for a cuppa and a cream cake is the annual Friends in Common Cuppa for Cancer to be held on May 26 at the Mulwala Water Ski Club.

Aussie legend at Mulwala Water Ski Club James Reyne is one of Australia's most loved singer songwriters.

rom his early days with Australian Crawl to his latest album "Every Man A King" Reyne's’ song-writing coupled with his idiosyncratic vocal style, has enabled him to transcend the disposability of music industry fashion and carve his place in the musical landscape of Australia.

"If there's any theme to this album it's people being easily impressed,” Reyne said of his latest album. “This silliness that they aspire to, the lives they read about in magazines. Their obsession with trash culture, the bizarre values we seem to live by. It's all just endlessly and perversely fascinating to me." Every Man A King closes a 30-year circle since James first led Australian Crawl into the front line of the Oz rock boom. His eye and pen grew sharper through a platinumlined solo career, but never have his wit and poignancy been on more consistently solid musical ground than here. “Every Man A King was a phrase that (radical populist politician) Huey Long used when he was Governor of Louisiana in 1930," James explained. "If you apply it to this country, and the world at the moment, every man is struggling to be a king and certainly every man is not. A lot of them think they are. And they're not either." James Reyne and his band will appear at Mulwala Water Ski Club on May 28, live and free.

The Mulwala Water Ski Club are just great and we always have a lot of fun.” Tickets for the Cuppa for Cancer can be purchased early for $7 or at the door for $8, everyone is welcome. But don’t despair if you have to work on May 26, Friends in Common can bring morning tea to your workplace. “We visit every business in Belmore Street and take orders for morning tea,” Mrs Dykes said. “Then we plate it up and deliver it on the day.” Mrs Dykes said the tremendous catering feat would not be possible without the support of people who baked goodies for the club cuppa and the business deliveries. “I know Joyce Torpy at the hospital has volun-

The Cancer Council of Victoria has 18 registered Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events in Moira Shire scheduled for May. Sumptuous dinner, memorable show You can now enjoy a dinner and show package at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre when you book to see the Tasmanian Theatre Company production of Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, May 12.

F

or only $60 you can experience one of the most exciting pieces of theatre written in decades as well as select a wonderful dinner from two fantastic local venues, Watermarc or Intermezzo. Dinner will include two courses and a drink. I Am My Own Wife tells the true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf and her escape from persecution during the Second World War. It is the only one-person play to win a Pulitzer Prize and is a beautifully written telling of a remarkable story' said Tasmanian Theatre Company Artistic Director Charles Parkinson. What makes her story so astounding is that Charlotte was a man and she lived her

distinctive life adamantly on her own terms. Charlotte survived two of the most repressive regimes of the 20th Century – the Nazis and the East German Communists – courageously providing refuge for Berlin’s avant-garde. Charlotte wore a simple black dress and a string of pearls in plain sight, staggeringly unique in a time of conformity. I Am My Own Wife showcases the mastery of outstanding actor Robert Jarman. Playing nearly 40 characters, Jarman treads the fine line between reality and impossibility that makes Charlotte’s story so vividly theatrical and completely engrossing. The 2004 World Premiere season of I Am My Own Wife won 14 major awards including 2 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Watermarc is located at 56 Faithful Street Wangaratta & Intermezzo Cafe is located at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre.

Suitable for: ages 15+. Tickets for show only $35, $40. Dinner and show $60. Bookings at the Box Office on 03 5722 8105.

Excitement tops the bill at Wahgunyah Speedway Next Sunday, May 15 sees one of Wahgunyah Speedway’s most exciting programmes yet.

H

eading the list is the Victorian Titles for Production Cars. This category has proven to be the one to watch throughout this long season, and the fact that the national title has already been run and won recently at Leeton, simply sets the scene for some more torrid racing at this big oval. Corowa’s young champion Jake Mills has thrown down the gauntlet to all the speedway regulars, and he and his father Trevor and brother Brenton, will be anxious to show their team form at their home track. Also on the programme is the Ovens and Murray Zone Titles for the entry-level Standard Saloon category. Always well-subscribed, the ‘Standards’ are the proof that the Holden v Ford rivalry is well alive. Supporting the two titles confrontations are the Goulburn-Ovens Sedans and the mostly Mount Beauty-based Vic Sports Sedans. All of these categories are very much at home on the long and fast Wahgunyah track, so high speeds will be the

order of the day. Also on the programme and a real “blast from the past” are the ever-popular Howlin’ Humpy Holdens. There has been quite a shuffling among their ranks of late. Notably, veteran Elwin Charlton had the misfortune to roll his green number 4 FX at Leeton and his car has since been sold to a Leeton driver and is expected to be seen back on the track after suitable repair time. Elwin meantime takes over the late Brian Barklem’s blue FJ number 48. Mick Bunt took his white number 84 to Leeton also, and left it there after striking a satisfactory deal and it too, will be back on track. Chris Glare was another victim of the “Devil’s Elbow” at Leeton and damaged his gold number 2

ater for Elephants is a romantic drama based on the Sara Gruen novel of the same name. The storyline hinges on the lust for a forbidden love, with a brutish villain thrown in, animal cruelty, friendship and loyalty, all of which takes place in the most unlikely setting – a circus. Told through flashbacks (as so many good and bad movies are) the audience is invited in to the bright and bold yet somewhat seedy underbelly of a 1930’s circus and the motley crew that reside within. The movie’s themes are tried and tested and the film has so far garnered mixed reviews but the combination of the screen-savvy Witherspoon with the somewhat pigeonholed Pattinson is interesting. Witherspoon seemingly turns everything she touches to gold which may be just the ticket to rescue Pattinson from the unshakable vampire-tag he wears. The question for the audience will be Pattinson hold his own against the acting might of Witherspoon and fellow Oscar winner Waltz or will he be shuffled back to pale-make up and teenage drama? Water for Elephants is now showing at the Wangaratta Cinema Centre.
