Corowa roads battle continues Impassable roads, some still covered in water, are continuing to cause headaches for Corowa Shire Council as they work to address millions of dollars of damage caused by extreme weather events. The ongoing effort to repair roads, particularly in rural areas, was discussed at the March 15 Council meeting. “I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but something has to be

done,” said Cr Bill Bott. “I travelled along Angle Road the other day and I was in a four-wheel drive but I still needed a great deal of skill and a hell of a lot of luck to get through without getting bogged. If a driver went in there and didn’t know what they were doing they wouldn’t come out.” Cr Bott highlighted Angle Road, School Road and Victoria Park Rd, all in the Rennie/ Savernake area, as some

of the roads with the worst damage. Director of Engineering Services Mr John Babbs acknowledged the problem and said in many cases it was simply a case of areas being too wet to get in and begin repair work. “We’ve got roads that are still under water and roads where it’s just still too wet to get any machinery in there,” he said. “We can’t fix anything and we can’t build

anything while there is still so much water lying around.” Mr Babbs cited Cemetery Road, as it extends from Redlands Road to Bullicourt Road, as a particularly bad area. “We’ve been in there mixing concrete with gravel and putting it in holes just trying to improve the road condition,” he said. “But at the same time we’ve got trucks that continue to go through there, in some

cases driving around road closed signs, causing even more damage.” Corowa Shire Council has been seriously affected by major rain and storm events in October and December last year and in February this year. Natural Disaster Declarations were issued for the October and December events and council has applied for a third declaration for the February storm. Mr Babbs said he estimated the to-
