Training session from arou In the third edition of our newest feature, training sessions from around the world, we have divided the exercises into 3 so called zones: the ‘Top Zone’, ‘Youth Zone’ and ‘Goalkeeping Zone’, each zones will be featured on two pages, start with the Top Zone below.

Running & passing (Juventus) Organization - Two cones are lined up (distance between the cones approx. 20m). Player A passes the ball to player B. Player A runs towards player B. Player B passes the ball back to player A. Player B runs towards player A. Player A passes for the second time to player B and runs to the cone on the other side. Player B passes to player C and runs to the cone on the other side

Variation - Executing this exercise only using the left or right foot - Variation in distance between the cones - Changing the speed of executing this exercise (only 1 or 2 touches allowed)

Details: Concentration; Accurate passing; ball speed; Keep the ball low Finishing after a cross (AC Milan) Organization -

Field size: half a field A combines with B A sprints along the sideline and crosses the ball The 2 strikers (C’s) sprint towards the penalty area and finish on goal This exercise can be executed on the left and right side of the field

Coaching -

Accurate passing Coach the right moment (when the strikers must start sprinting) The winger(s) must give crosses with a lot of pace Crosses must end up nearby the penalty-spot 1 striker must sprint to the first post and the second striker crosses the first striker and sprints to the far post

Conditioning and coordination exercise (FC Liverpool 1) Organization -

Field size: half a field Player A passes the ball to player B, who passes back to A Player B runs towards the last hurdle and jumps over the 2 hurdles Player A passes the ball to player B, who passes back to A Player B runs immediately to the pole and goes around it Player A passes the ball to the running player (B) Player B dribbles to the cone (exercise starts again) This exercise can be executed on both sides of the field

Coaching - This exercise can be executed with 5 to 10 players (use both field sides) - The objective is to improve condition, coordination and passing.

und the World TOP ZONE 3 against 3 with 1 neutral player (Lierse SK) Organization - Field size: 40m x 30m - 3 v 3 (1 neutral player) with 2 big goals en 2 goalkeepers - Neutral player plays with the team who’s in possession

Coaching - Constant Pressure - Speed of transition (from defense to offense and vice versa)

Variation - 3 v 3 without neutral player (tight defense is important) - Field size (small vs wide / long vs short) - Number of touches that are allowed

Ball possession, crossing and scoring (Sao Caetano 1) Organization -

Field size: the width of the box, length half a field 6v6 + 1 goalkeeper Basic team formation (defenders, midfielders and forwards) 2 players (outside midfielders or forwards) postioned on the sides of the field (1 on each side)

Progression - One team has to attack and score. If they scores, they continues attacking - The other team has to defend, and if they steal the ball, the game stops and this team now starts to attack - The attacking team can only score from a cross - One forward from the attacking team passes the ball to the outside player and overlaps this player, receiving the ball for a cross - Maximum 2 touches

Marking, Ball possession and mobility (Sao Caetano 2) Organization - Area: rectangle of 40m x 20m - Each team has 12 players, and 6 stay inside the box and 6 outside.

Outside Players - Outside players must be moving around during the game in a 10m area - He cannot stop moving or enter the box, when he his team looses possession. - Maximum 3 touches

Inside Players - 6v6; Both teams have to move around; Maximum 2 touches - One team has ball possession; The other team tries to steal the ball - The team with the ball can use its outside players to maintain possession

Period: 5 min, then outside players come inside and vice-versa 27

YOUTH ZONE Warm-up Organization: - Every player has a ball - The players tap the ball a couple of times with the inside of their left foot to the inside of their right foot (fast footwork), execute a fake move and shoot the ball against the wall - When the ball returns they receive it and immediately start with fast footwork again

Variation: - The players can receive the ball in different ways - The Manchester United players were doing this exercise indoor, but an ordinary wall or teammate can also be used

Finishing Organization: - Executed from both sides. The first players dribble simultaneously to the cone, cut the ball behind their standing foot, carrying it around the cone with the outside of their foot, do the Maradona move and finish on goal. - These players will become the goalkeeper - The next players in line start the exercise

Coaching: - Technical execution - Enthusiast players

Variation: - Many technical move are possible at the cone

1 versus 1 Organization: - The first player dribbles and shoots the ball diagonally to the opponent - This player receive the ball and initiates the 1 versus 1 - After the 1v1 the field players will become the goalkeepers

Coaching: - Positive coaching - Continuously dare to execute an action/move

YOUTH ZONE 2 versus 2 Organization: - 2v2 in same area as 1v1 - 2 players are resting, 2 player on goal - After 1 minute the 2 resting players and 2 goalkeepers substitute the field players

Coaching: - Positive coaching - Stimulate actions

3 versus 3 Organization: - 3v3, 2 goalkeepers

Coaching: - Besides stimulating actions, also pay attention to how the player play during possession opponent (in a simple way). They have to ensure the ball is not played in between the two defenders

Progression: - After this, play 4v4 in a larger area and with new teams

Small sided game U8 Organization: - 5v5 or 6v6 with two small goals - Every time a player executes the Maradona move, the opponents around this player must roll over on the ground once - This stimulates the player in a playful manner to practice the move with resistance

Progression: - Start with 1 ball, but quickly introduce a second, third and then fourth ball - Every player will be actively doing either the Maradona move or trying to steal the ball - Lots of scoring, so high enjoyment for the kids

GOALKEEPING ZONE Goalkeeping (Hannover ’96) Organization -

Goalkeeper stands in the middle of the goal Goalkeeping coach shoots in the left or right corner (1) Goalkeeper must try to save the shot (2) After his save the goalkeeper must return to the middle of the goal (3) - Goalkeeping trainer shoots in the same corner

Variation -

Shooting high / low Shooting in both corners Pace of shooting the ball Variation of number of shots in a row (intensity)

Passing and shooting exercises with goalkeepers (1) Organization - Work with two groups closely together - A pre-move is execute and the ball is being passed - By means of several techniques the players turn towards the goalkeeper - The ball is shot into the goalkeepers hands - The goalkeeper rolls or throws the ball back in the run of the player

Passing and shooting exercises with goalkeepers (2) Organization - A pre-move is execute and the ball is being passed - The receiving player turns and initiates a wall pass with the player next to him - This player passes the ball back - The ball is shot diagonally to the goalkeeper - The goalkeeper rolls or throws the ball back in the run of the player

GOALKEEPING ZONE Circuit with fast feet (FC Germania Teveren) Organization - Goalkeeper completes circuit as illustrated - Different running directions: forwards, sideways, backwards, diagonally - At the end the goalkeeper will save the shot

Coaching - Improve fast feet - Stay low, bend knees

Zig-Zag-feet with saving the shot on goal (FC Germania Teveren) Organisation - Zig-zag exercise between cones - Start behind goal, ending with saving a shot on goal - Work on both sides of the goal

Coaching - Improve fast feet - Stay low, bend knees

Diverse fast feet with saving shot on goal (FC Germania Teveren) Organization - Goalkeeper completes a ceratin circuit - Different running directions: forwards, sideways, backwards, diagonally - Start behind goal and end with saving shot goal - Work on both side of the goal

Coaching - Improve fast feet - Stay low, bend knees
