NW GREENSBORO – Members of Northwest Guilford High School’s marching band are traveling to Hawaii to perform a concert Dec. 7 as part of the 80th Commemorative Concert Series at Pearl Harbor.
Sixty-seven students, accompanied by families and band staff, will depart Saturday, Dec. 4, and return home the following Thursday, Dec. 9. A total of 156 people are going on the trip, according to band director Brian McMath.
“It is going to be a chockedfull educational and cultural experience, and we get to perform,” McMath said in an interview earlier this week.
Aside from performing, the band plans to visit historic military sites, such as the USS Arizona Memorial and the Polynesian Cultural Center, McMath said. They also plan to hike at Diamond Head, an inactive volcano on the island of O’ahu.
It’s the band’s first trip to Hawaii, where they’ll be among other bands, orchestras and choir groups performing to commemorate the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, according to the website of Pearl Harbor Concerts. Performances will take place on Ford Island, an active military base, and at the Pearl Harbor Museum’s Hangar 79.
The NWHS band plans to preview its Pearl Harbor performance with a concert at the high school Thursday, Dec. 2.
The musicians plan to perform holiday music during the preview concert, in Hawaii and again at the high school for the holiday concert Dec. 16, McMath said.

Wreaths over Northwest
