STOKESDALE – The North Carolina State Chili Championship takes place at Camp Carefree on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This annual fun-filled fundraiser gives attendees the chance to partake of some delicious chili and enjoy a family-friendly event while supporting the Stokesdale-based summer camp for children with serious disabilities and illnesses.

Reidsville, Madison, Mayodan, Stokesdale, Oak Ridge and Summerfield asked to collaborate on developing economically feasible alternatives for regional water supply

SUMMERFIELD – It’s been well over a year in coming, but homeowners in the Vineyards at Summerfield off N.C. 150 finally have the Town’s consent to pay for immediate repairs to a neighborhood trail that connects to the A&Y Greenway. When developed, the one-half mile trail was designated for public use with a goal of getting cyclists and pedestrians to N.C. 150 without having to cross over U.S. 220. A Greenway easement agreement with the Town was recorded in 2005. Though the publicly designated trail was developed as part of the Vineyards’ open space requirements, it has not been confirmed that the Town ever accepted ownership of it. Regardless, Vineyards representatives

attending town council meetings since February 2015 have argued the trail is advertised and available for public use – and is well used – and it is only fair that the Town participates in its repair and maintenance. Very little trail maintenance has been done over the last five years, but much is needed. Vineyards’ HOA representatives who have been in ongoing conversations with the Town have asked that it cover all, or at least a significant portion of the cost of bringing the trail up to par. After ongoing discussions between Town Manager Scott Whitaker and Vineyards representatives, as well as with former Town Manager Michael Brandt and Guilford County Parks and Recreation

The town council unanimously approved the agreement, while emphasizing verbally and in writing that the Town was in no way obligating itself to future trail repairs and maintenance. The trail repairs will be completed within the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

OAK RIDGE – Following a unanimous vote from the town council at its April 7 meeting, Oak Ridge Town Manager Bruce Oakley will be seeking bids for sidewalk construction that could be completed as early as next month. Can you tell us about the multiple piles of coal or coal ash in the field at the corner of River Road and Settle Bridge Road? When we passed that spot last week, several of the piles were actually on fire. The spot you’re talking about is located in Stoneville near the Dan River. We were able to locate the farmer who owns the property, John Webster. It turns out that what

you saw is not coal ash, but wood ash, and Webster is using it as a natural way to amend the soil on his farm. “A long time ago, people used ashes

to throw on their garden,” says Webster. “It takes the place of lime.” The fire you saw was just the embers burning down to ash.

extend the water lines into northern Guilford County, he indicated at the time that the municipality hoped to receive grant funding for the project should the $2 billion state bond referendum (Connect NC) pass. Voters overwhelmingly approved that bond last month by a 2-1 margin.

...continued from p. 1

“The Town of Madison has a municipal water line extending south on U.S. 220 and ending about 3 miles or so from the Guilford County line. The City of Reidsville has a municipal water line extending down U.S. 158 and ending near the Witty Road/U.S 158 intersection. He said that the goal of Rockingham County and Madison and Reidsville is to join the two water lines in the area of the intersection of U.S. 220 and U.S. 158 in Guilford County.”

After the bond’s passage, Brown said he got another call from Richardson, who said Rockingham County would like to “take the U.S. 220/U.S. 158 water line south down U.S. 220 to N.C. 150 (Oak Ridge Road) and then west on N.C. 150 to the Town of Oak Ridge where it would be the water supplier for the fledgling Town of Oak Ridge water system.

Though Richardson said Rockingham County did not have the funds to

A week after the passage of the March 15 state bond referendum I got another call from (Rockingham County) Commissioner (Mark) Richardson. I was already aware that the Town of Oak Ridge has been doing the necessary ordinance changes to begin a fledgling water system for many months. Commissioner Richardson indicated that they would like to take the U.S. 220/ U.S. 158 water line south down U.S. 220 to N.C. 150 (Oak Ridge Road) and then west on N.C. 150 to the Town of Oak Ridge where it would be the water supplier for the fledgling Town of Oak Ridge water system.” Summerfield Mayor Mark Brown, in a prepared statement he read at Summerfield’s April 12 town council meeting

“He wanted to ask for Summerfield’s cooperation and partnership in the grant application process and subsequent ability to use the water line for purposes such as water accessibility for the fire department or any uses that Summerfield might identify in the future.”

At Richardson’s request, Brown presented a Memorandum of Understanding in which Reidsville, Madison, Mayodan, Stokesdale, Oak Ridge and Summerfield were asked to agree to work collaboratively with Rockingham County to support a regional water initiative for the purposes

It’s very premature to have any discussion about a water line coming down 150 to Oak Ridge, and we have not had that conversation (with Rockingham County). There are so many options with this, and it’s way too early to talk about where we want to run a water line.” Oak Ridge Mayor Spencer Sullivan

of water supply planning and future economic development. Council members did not vote on whether to sign the County’s Memorandum of Understanding, nor did any additional discussion about it take place at the April 12 meeting. Brown said he hoped to receive more information within the next month so that the council could discuss the issue at length and provide more details to the public. In response to Brown’s presentation to the Summerfield Town Council, Oak Ridge Mayor Spencer Sullivan acknowledged his Town has been in water discussions with Rockingham County off

and on since 2005, but said Oak Ridge is not ready to discuss details for extending water lines to its town limits. “Because of where Rockingham County is, it has always been a pretty attractive option (for supplying water to the Town”,” Sullivan said. “But we also have Winston-Salem. And now that GTCC has built its facility right up N.C. 68, water (from Greensboro) is very close. “It’s very premature to have any discussion about a water line coming down 150 to Oak Ridge, and we have not had that conversation,” Sullivan continued. “There are so many options with this, and it’s way too early to talk about where we want to run a water line.” Sullivan said Oak Ridge will hold a water workshop on Tuesday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at Oak Ridge Town Hall, at which time the town council plans to go all the way back to 2000, when the Town first began pursuing a water system with Aqua North Carolina.

“Then we’ll come forward with where we are today with our ordinance which establishes a water system. How do you say ‘Prom’?

Welcome to

With Northwest Guilford High School students preparing for the upcoming prom on April 16, we did an informal survey to learn some of the ways they asked their date to this year’s prom.

A weekly section in the Northwest Observer focused on our local youth and the adults who positively impact them.

“I asked a police officer to pull us over,” said senior Robbie Rowell of how he asked his date, Elizabeth Peterson, to the prom. “He gave me a ticket that said, “Prom?” “He made a Grey’s Anatomy-themed poster and dressed up in scrubs,” said senior Katie Sutton of her prom date. “I asked my boyfriend and I made him a poster,” senior Grace Liberatore. “He wrote 10 reasons why I am a great girlfriend in my driveway and gave me flowers and candy,” said senior Blake Leggett.

NorthRidge breaks ground on Phase II

Cunningham receives top producer awards During the 2015 Keller Williams of Greensboro awards ceremony held at Greensboro’s Kress Terrace on March 18, Realtor Dede Cunningham received the Top Individual Agent award and the Quadruple Gold Sales award for most homes closed and most volume closed for 2015.

Cunningham attributes her success to her commitment to communicating with her clients. “My Cunningham clients tell me they appreciate my consistent communication and follow-through,” says Cunningham. “They’re never left wondering what’s going on.”

Cunningham was the top producing individual agent among the approximately 120 agents working at KW’s Highwoods Boulevard location. Last year she had 78 transactions with a volume of over $17 million.

A resident of Oak Ridge, Cunningham has over 26 years of experience in the industry. She can be reached at (336) 509-1923.

We cannot say enough about Bobbie, and would recommend her to anyone needing a real estate agent.”

Land is being cleared for 15 more lots in Phase II of NorthRidge subdivision in Stokesdale.

Oak Ridge developer Francis Disney has begun work on the second phase of NorthRidge subdivision, located off Prince Edward Road in Stokesdale. This new phase adds 15 more lots to the existing 11 lots in the first phase and opens up a scenic view to the lake located on the property.

The NorthRidge builder team includes local builders Disney Construction, Johnson and Lee, LLC, Precept Construction and Gingerich Homes. When completed, Disney says the 130-acre community will offer 100 homes on 1-acre lots.

2016 Spring Parade of Homes April 23-24, April 30-May 1 by ANNETTE JOYCE The advent of spring brings the excitement of the 2016 Spring Parade of Homes. Scheduled for two weekends – April 23-24 and April 30-May 1 – the Parade of Homes, an annual event sponsored by the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA) in conjunction with the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem, gives attendees the opportunity to get an inside look at the area’s newest homes for sale and meet the builders who built them. This year’s Parade features more than 80 newly-constructed homes in Guilford and Forsyth counties; nearly half of those homes are located in the growing northwest area.

More than a typical Realtor open house, the Parade of Homes gives the area’s best builders a way to showcase their experience, expertise and design creativity. “Only members of the Builders Association are allowed to be in the parade,” says Phil Warrick, GBA president and owner of Piedmont Wholesale in Greensboro. “These are the people who have met the highest standards of building practices and have agreed to abide by the association’s code of ethics. You can count on a quality home with any of these builders.” The Parade of Homes is designed to be of interest to a wide range of people, not just those looking to make an immediate purchase. “It’s a very comfortable and casual event,” says Cheryl Collins, GBA executive officer. “The annual Parade of Homes provides an opportunity for consumers looking to build or buy a new home – or just interested in seeing the latest in home design trends and amenities – to see a variety of homes and communities, as well as meet and talk with area builders, designers and suppliers,” she adds. “Consumers will see the latest advances in home construction, such as energy efficiency features; along with the newest trends in home amenities including open

floor plans, large master suites, gourmet kitchens and outdoor living spaces.” What other trends can attendees expect to see? Scott Allred, president of Precept Construction in Greensboro, has three homes in the Parade. He says a lot of the spring trends are influenced by what people are seeing on HGTV and other home-related shows. “There are lots of greys and whites for both cabinets and wall colors,” he says. “Quartz countertops, which are a premium to granite, are popular. Quartz has been around for a few years, but it’s just making its way into homes.”

Allred also mentions the abundance of high-end pre-finished floors. “You can get a wider variety of finishes and surfaces with premium pre-finished floors than with the sand and finish style,” explains Allred. At Walraven Signature Homes, Keenan Foster, project manager, says rock and stone exterior accents are still popular, as are screen porches for outdoor entertaining. In their higher-end homes, luxury features are a definite trend. “We’ve added steam showers, which are like a steam room you’d find in a gym,” says Foster. “They’re very therapeutic and homeowners like having them.” Another trend this year is a move away from oil-rubbed bronze light and plumbing fixtures and other hardware. “We’re doing chrome and satin-nickel,” says Foster. “People are looking for a more contemporary look.”

Over 30 different GBA members are involved in this year’s Parade and Collins says the home prices start at $149,900 and go to $869,000. Along with showcasing some of

favorite homes, as well as map the homes you want to tour for driving directions between homes. Links to download the apps can be found on the GBA website. While directional signs are great indicators of where houses are located, Collins mentions that all areas do not have signs. For instance, because of town signage ordinances, homes located in the Oak Ridge town limits will not have directional signs.

Rather than store or distribute food, A Simple Gesture collects and channels food to three different organizations – BackPack Beginnings, the Out of the Garden Project and the Greensboro Urban Ministry. Attendees interested in participating are invited to bring canned foods to any of the Parade homes. Food banks currently need protein-based foods, such as chicken, tuna, beans and vegetables. Additional information on ways to participate with A Simple Gesture will be available at each Parade home. Since the Parade is spread out across the county, the GBA has worked hard to make locating the homes as easy as possible. Collins says you can visit GBA’s website at www.GreensboroBuilders.org or pick up a 2016 Spring Parade of Homes magazine at either Harris Teeter

From beginning to completion, David was there at every step. He is professional, and his craftsmanship is to be admired. The home was completed in a timely fashion and the quality of construction is top rated. David has taken the time and responsibility of ensuring the building process was of only the

Hillsdale Village expanding

Make yourself at home

Rendering provided by Will Stevens

Construction is underway on the final phase of Hillsdale Village on N.C. 150 and Lake Brandt Road.

SUMMERFIELD – On April 4, Will Stevens, real estate developer and owner of Hillsdale Village, broke ground on a new building in this Summerfield shopping center. The 6,500-squarefoot building will be located west of Rio Grande and will include five units, each approximately 1,300 square feet. Though he declined to reveal any specifics about future tenants, Stevens shared that he already has three of the five units leased and there is serious

interest in the two remaining units. Since purchasing the shopping center, located at the intersection of N.C. 150 and Lake Brandt Road, in February 2015, Stevens has spent the last year working on plans for this final phase of the project. He estimates the new building, which will be the shopping center’s fifth, will cost between $800,000 and $900,000 and should be ready for occupancy as early as August.

ROADS taking new direction This is a great time to think about “rebirth,” and in that light we want to let the community know that ROADS is doing some soul searching to determine a new direction for our nonprofit. We appreciate all who have participated in our Saturday Markets, various meetings, support of Stokesdale Business Association, help with downtown park functions, downtown decorating and lighting the park for the holidays, participation in the 9/11 Remembrance, Adopt-a-Pot program, “Save the Outhouse” efforts, auto show, Halloween trick-or-treating, music nights and other functions. ROADS began in 2008 to try to revitalize Stokesdale. Our main goals were the NCSTMS and Mountains-to-Sea Trail. We were in the “Final Four” on our first application for the NC Small Town Main Street program, but lost this bid due to council decisions. We recently lost our vision of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Stokesdale, also due to council decisions. Our thinking was that either of these could go a long way toward solving some of the much-needed traffic calming, connectivity, water/sewer

issues and business development for our historic downtown. It is sad to say that neither of these goals could be met; we are sorry for the inability to reach these goals, but look forward to new beginnings. We no longer have a web page but you can follow us on Facebook. We leave a beautiful “Welcome to Historic Stokesdale” sign in the downtown Linear Park to remind all passersby that this is Stokesdale and was formerly Green Pond (metal work by Joe Thacker and artwork by Doug Mack). Special thanks to Susan Giles Lukens and Melissa Bocci, who served as ROADS officers, spearheaded many of our activities and gave great amounts of time and support. We are also grateful to council member Frank Bruno for his continued support of ROADS. It has been our joy to meet so many wonderful people as we tried to develop our community together. Wishing you a loving family, good health and good friends. Pam and Bill Lemmons, Revitalizing Our Ancestors Dreams in Stokesdale (ROADS)

HB2 responses disheartening After reading last week’s paper, I found the response to HB2 extremely disheartening. I’m not transgender, and I want to acknowledge that. However, I am a member of the LGBT community. While my experiences as a gay 17-year-old don’t match up with trans individuals here in North Carolina and elsewhere, I can certainly relate. To be othered by the community you live in is a rough experience, and to have the people around you make it apparent that they see you as a

24

APRIL 15 - 21, 2016

lesser person is difficult to deal with. It takes a toll. Your mental health suffers. I can’t imagine what it must be like for the trans members of my community to have their identities taken away from them. So many of the responses I’ve seen to HB2 have questioned why it’s such a big deal if you can’t use the bathroom you identify with. Do people not realize that being forced to use a bathroom opposite your gender is the world taking away your identity? That it invalidates who you know yourself to be? If a trans woman is forced

to use the men’s restroom, the sign may as well read “You’re not a woman, nor will you ever be.” Not to mention that trans people who are visibly undergoing transition could potentially be putting themselves in danger by using the bathroom that aligns with their sex at birth. After all, the South isn’t exactly known for its hospitality towards the LGBT community. And to everyone claiming HB2 defends your rights by keeping men out of women’s restrooms/locker rooms and vice

versa: One, a trans woman is every bit as much of a woman as a “real” woman, and a trans man every bit as much of a man. Two, trans people (and the LGBT community as a whole) are not predators. We’re not here to hurt you. We’re not here to corrupt the children. We’re here to get by in life, just like everyone else. We’re no longer living in the 1950s, and it’s high time people got the memo. Nathan Grannan, STOKESDALE

You should know the difference. Editor’s note: My apologies for not being able to provide Congressman Walker’s full response (in last week’s News Brief) to the question about how (or if) Trump’s popularity has changed him, and that my condensed version of his response may have been misleading. What Walker said was that Trump’s popularity has confirmed what he already knew – that people are frustrated with career politicians, they are angry, and what they want is for their elected officials to “just tell the truth.” Walker did not state, nor do I believe that anything he said implied that he feels Trump tells the truth. On the subject of Trump, Walker neither praised nor criticized him.

CAREFREE BENEFIT ...continued from p. 1

ship, giving cooks the opportunity to win points to advance to the international level. Having raised over $86,000 in the past 11 years, the championship is a major fundraiser and a much-anticipated event at the children’s camp.

Fads come and go, but a healthy smile never goes out of style

No one is more surprised or pleased at the event’s popularity than Kenny Jones, the event’s chief organizer. Along with the members of his group, Jones has invested hundreds of behindthe-scene hours making sure each year’s event is more successful than the previous one. “It’s a good family event that lets us give back to a great local organization,” says Jones. “We enjoy doing it and those who come out have a really good time.” Jones is expecting about 30 chili cooks to set up booths around the camp’s large picnic shelter. While the cooks are good-naturedly attempting to one-up each other, attendees reap the tasty results. “Taste kits” give people the option of trying several different kinds of chili. Once they’ve found the chili that hits the spot, they can purchase it by the bowl. If you’re not a chili fan, don’t fret. There’s plenty of other food including

hot dogs, hamburgers and homemade baked goods. Food may be the focal point of the cook-off, but there are lots of activities to keep everyone, regardless of age, happily occupied. Kids can enjoy a ride around the camp in a train or around the arena on a horse. There will also be a bouncy house and the camp features a playground and a petting zoo.

raffle, a handmade Amish-style quilt will be given away. A bake sale, cruisein car show and live bands complete the activity roster. Besides providing a one-week camp for children with serious disabilities and illnesses, Camp Carefree also devotes two separate weeks to hosting camps for well children who have chronically ill or disabled siblings or parents.

Another draw is the silent auction, which offers an array of great merchandise donated by local merchants and individuals. This year’s items include handcrafted pottery from local potters, birdhouses, a beach vacation and loads of surprises.

There’s no charge to attend the camp, which accepts children between the ages of 6 and 16. The camp’s financial support comes from private donations and rental fees collected from events held in off-season months.

There’s also a raffle that goes on throughout the day with prizes being awarded about every 15 minutes. Prizes include everything from restaurant gift certificates and oil changes to stuffed animals and accessories. In a separate
