As a mother and wife, I cherish time spent with my family. My children remind me how blessed I am to be a mother. Sadly, for thousands of mothers in Kenya and around the world, having a child is tantamount to a death sentence; thousands of children in our country grow up without the love and

care of a mother. I am deeply saddened by the fact that women and children in our country die from causes that can be avoided. The number of preventable deaths among young children is alarming; in 2012 alone, over 100,000 infants died in Kenya – the majority not making it to their first birthday. It doesn’t have to be this way. There are many solutions that could save our mothers and children from dying needlessly. Elimination of HIV among children while keeping their mothers alive, provision of better prenatal, delivery and postnatal services will go a long way to reduce maternal mortality. Further, ensuring that there are adequate skilled birth attendants to educate and support women and their babies during pregnancy, childbirth and after birth will greatly reduce maternal deaths. Timely access to antiretroviral treatment, Immunization against early childhood diseases like pneumonia and measles, distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life will ensure that our babies survive beyond 5 years. I am convinced that we have the means and know-how to achieve a significant decline in maternal and child deaths within our lifetime. This is why I am launching the “Beyond Zero Campaign” which seeks to bring prenatal and postnatal medical treatment to less privileged women and children in Kenya. Through this initiative I will provide fully equipped mobile clinics along with other basic medical equipment to each of the 47 counties in Kenya. I look forward to working with you on to galvanize support for this project that will enable us to stamp out unwarranted deaths suffered at childbirth. Why the Beyond Zero Campaign?

The First Lady committed during the 2013 Organisation of First Ladies against HIV and AIDS in Africa meeting held in Addis Ababa to champion the campaign to eliminate new HIV infections among children and keep their mothers alive. In December 2013 the First Lady launched a five year strategic framework to accelerate progress in HIV Control and promotion of maternal, Newborn and child health in Kenya. In order for the Office of the First Lady to effectively deliver this commitment, the First Lady has launched the “Beyond Zero” Foundation. The Foundation will draw attention to challenges faced by disadvantaged Kenyans to end preventable deaths among women and children, and giving new impetus to the fight against HIV and AIDS. In 2014, the First Lady’s campaign will focus on issues relating to HIV, maternal and child health. The campaign will focus on the need to address critical challenges that impede access to maternal and child health services. Through the Beyond Zero Foundation, H.E the First Lady intends to support various activities that will result to elimination of new HIV infections among children and promote overall maternal, new-born and children’s health.

Participation in the London Marathon (13 April, 2014) H.E the First Lady, has embarked on a mission to combat this unacceptable and preventable state of maternal and childhood mortality through a program that will increase access to HIV prevention, prenatal, postnatal care and treatment services to disadvantaged populations in all 47 Counties of Kenya. To highlight the HIV, Maternal and Child Health challenges facing disadvantaged women and children in Kenya, the First Lady will participate in the 2014 London Marathon. H.E the First Lady seeks to leverage on the global platform provided by the 2014 London Marathon to raise visibility of the issues and, mobilize resources to accelerate access to services. As a precursor to this event, an inaugural First Lady’s Half Marathon will be held to raise awareness and galvanise local support towards this cause. The two marathons will raise funds to improve access to HIV, maternal, newborn and children’s health through provision of mobile clinics, incubators, point of care diagnostic kits for early infant diagnosis oxygen concentrators and solar panels for all counties in Kenya.

The health of mothers and children, particularly newborns, is closely linked. Research by World Vision International has shown that if a mother dies, her child is ten times more likely to die before the age of five than a child whose mother survives. Poor nutrition, preventable diseases such as malaria or HIV and AIDS and poor access to antenatal care contribute significantly to pregnancy related complications.

Over 5,500 women in Kenya die annually due to pregnancy and birth related complications. In 2012 alone, over 100,000 children below age five died before their first birthday. In the same year, there were over 13,000 new HIV infections among children, of whom 62% did not access life-saving medication.

Why support the First Lady’s participation in the two Marathons? • The events create a strong platform to galvanize substantial support and raise awareness on HIV, maternal and child health challenges.

• They create an opportunity to create a women’s movement around wellness and the importance of healthy living. • The two events offer an opportunity to promote Kenya positively at a global level and promote the country as a sports tourism destination.

Project Objectives The project seeks to achieve the following: • Raise awareness on the challenges surrounding HIV control, maternal, new born and children’s health in Kenya. • Leverage support and raise funds to increase access to HIV maternal, new born and children’s health services. • Raise awareness on the link between good health and the centrality of maternal and child health towards a strong and prosperous nation. • Encourage women to adopt healthy lifestyles such as preventive health through early screening for diseases, participation in athletics and other sporting activities.

Stakeholders The campaign will target a number of major stakeholders including the following: • National Government: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services, Ministry of Commerce, Tourism and East Africa Region, Ministry of Devolution and Planning and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. • County Governments: (Governors and their spouses), County Executive Committee members for health, social security as well as county health facility administrators. • Donors/Sponsors: We will target private sector players, Private health care providers, International Organisations, International foundations on health, Organization working on women and children issues. • Concerned citizens: We will target a range of activities. • Athletics Kenya (AK) and other key sports institutions.


Campaign activities March 9, 2014 – First Lady’s Half-Marathon The First Lady’s Half Marathon to highlight HIV, maternal and child-health challenges. H.E The First Lady will host the Marathon. Citizens and friends of Kenya are invited to participate and partner in this noble cause. The event will be held at the Government Square, Kenyatta International Conference Centre.

April 13, 2014 - London Marathon On April 13, 2014, H.E the First Lady will be running in the prestigious London Marathon to raise funds to support the implementation of carefully selected programs that will enhance access to HIV prevention, maternal and child health care services in Kenya.
