SPUNBOUND
Strong and breathable, Spunbond/Meltblown/Spunbond (SMS) is a multi-layer fabric composed of inner layers of meltblown polypropylene sandwiched between strong, outer layers of spunbond polypropylene that is ideal for extended wear. Light/medium weight SMS is appropriate for low amounts of fluid and heavy weight SMS may be appropriate for moderate contact with fluids.

AAMI PB70 Guidelines
The Benchmark for Protection To comply with AAMI Guidelines, protective apparel must achieve minimum performance standards for strength, barrier performance and fluid resistance. Tested under controlled conditions, AAMI-rated gowns must demonstrate a 4% AQL level, which provides a high level of assurance that users are protected for the anticipated level of fluid contact. Each gown must be fully protective in the front, back and along the seams, and clearly labeled to indicate the level of protection provided, from AAMI PB70 Level 1 (lowest) to AAMI Level 4 (highest). The entire PSG portfolio of Isolation Gowns are manufactured in FDA QSR-compliant, ISO 13485 certified facilities and meet all AAMI PB70 specifications for Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 protection. Since 1992, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX速 has been a globally standardized, independent mark of quality for raw, semi-finished and finished textile products from all stages of production and for all accessory materials used in the process. This global certified system assures manufacturers, sourcers, brands, retailers, and consumers around the world that certified products meet the strict limit values for harmful substances of STANDARD 100 and that these substances are not present in critical concentrations. OEKO-TEX速 tests for harmful substances at every stage of the textile value chain; certificates from preliminary stages are recognized. The tests for harmful substances in accordance with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX速 take into account important legal regulations, such as banned azo dyes, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, nickel, etc., requirements from the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) regarding lead, numerous harmful chemicals, even if they are not yet legally regulated, and diverse parameters for healthcare. A successful test allows for the labelling of respective textiles or materials with the STANDARD.
As a third-party independent label, STANDARD 100 is a helpful marketing tool enabling companies to transparently document their responsibility with respect to the product safety of their articles in terms of human ecology and for their customers along the textile chain, all the way through to brands, retailers and the consumer. The Performance Safety Group portfolio of Isolation Gowns are tested in accordance with the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX速 and labelled accordingly.

Healthcare Professionals - Optimize PPE Supply Infection Control - Environmental Infection Control Guidelines - Laundry and Bedding Laundry in a health-care facility may include bed sheets and blankets, towels, personal clothing, patient apparel, uniforms, scrub suits, gowns, and drapes for surgical procedures.1245 Although contaminated textiles and fabrics in health-care facilities can be a source of substantial numbers of pathogenic microorganisms, reports of health-care associated diseases linked to contaminated fabrics are so few in number that the overall risk of disease transmission during the laundry process likely is negligible. When the incidence of such events are evaluated in the context of the volume of items laundered in health-care settings (estimated to be 5 billion pounds annually in the United States),1246 existing control measures (e.g., standard precautions) are effective in reducing the risk of disease transmission to patients and staff. Therefore, use of current control measures should be continued to minimize the contribution of contaminated laundry to the incidence of health-care associated infections. The control measures described in this section of the guideline are based on principles of hygiene, common sense, and consensus guidance; they pertain to laundry services utilized by health-care facilities, either inhouse or contract, rather than to laundry done in the home.
Surgical Gowns, Drapes, and Disposable Fabrics An issue of recent concern involves the use of disposable (i.e., single use) versus reusable (i.e., multiple use) surgical attire and fabrics in health-care settings.1292 Regardless of the material used to manufacture gowns and drapes, these items must be resistant to liquid and microbial penetration.7, 1293– 1297 Surgical gowns and drapes must be registered with FDA to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness. Repellency and pore size of the fabric contribute to gown performance, but performance capability can be influenced by the item’s design and construction.1298, 1299 Reinforced gowns (i.e., gowns with double-layered fabric) generally are more resistant to liquid strike-through.1300, 1301 Reinforced gowns may, however, be less comfortable. Guidelines for selection and use of barrier materials for surgical gowns and drapes have been published.1302 When selecting a barrier product, repellency level and type of barrier should be compatible for the exposure expected.967 However, data are limited regarding the association between gown or drape characteristics and risk for surgical site infections.7, 1303 Health-care facilities must ensure optimal protection of patients and health-care workers. Not all fabric items in health care lend themselves to single-use. Facilities exploring options for gowns and drapes should consider the expense of disposable items and the impact on the facility’s waste-management costs once these items are discarded. Costs associated with the use of durable goods involve the fabric or textile items; staff expenses to collect, sort, clean, and package the laundry; and energy costs to operate the laundry if on-site or the costs to contract with an outside service.1304, 1305

Healthcare Professionals - Optimize PPE Supply Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of Isolation Gowns Audience: These considerations are intended for use by federal, state, and local public health officials; leaders in occupational health services and infection prevention and control programs; and other leaders in healthcare settings who are responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures for preventing pathogen transmission in healthcare settings. Purpose: This document offers a series of strategies or options to optimize supplies of isolation gowns in healthcare settings when there is limited supply. Surge capacity refers to the ability to manage a sudden, unexpected increase in patient volume that would otherwise severely challenge or exceed the present capacity of a facility. While there are no widely accepted measurements or triggers to distinguish surge capacity from daily patient care capacity, surge capacity is a useful framework to approach a decreased supply of isolation gowns during the COVID-19 response. Three general strata have been used to describe surge capacity and can be used to prioritize measures to conserve isolation gown supplies along the continuum of care. Conventional capacity: measures consist of providing patient care without any change in daily contemporary practices. This set of measures, consisting of engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls should already be implemented in general infection prevention and control plans in healthcare settings. Contingency capacity: measures may change daily standard practices but may not have any significant impact on the care delivered to the patient or the safety of healthcare personnel (HCP). These practices may be used temporarily during periods of expected isolation gown shortages. Crisis capacity: strategies that are not commensurate with standard U.S. standards of care. These measures, or a combination of these measures, may need to be considered during periods of known isolation gown shortages.
Contingency Capacity Strategies Shift gown use towards cloth isolation gowns. Reusable (i.e., washable) gowns are typically made of polyester or polyester-cotton fabrics. Gowns made of these fabrics can be safely laundered according to routine procedures and reused. Care should be taken to ensure that HCP do not touch outer surfaces of the gown during care. Reusable patient gowns and lab coats can be safely laundered according to routine procedures. • Laundry operations and personnel may need to be augmented to facilitate additional washing loads and cycles • Systems are established to routinely inspect, maintain (e.g., mend a small hole in a gown, replace missing fastening ties) and replace reusable gowns when needed (e.g., when they are thin or ripped).
