PREFACE The portfolio showcases some of my selected works done during the course of five years as an undergraduate student in KRVIA. Having been involved in the intense process, it has helped me shape my observation, my thought process, my analytical abilities and my strength in a manner that my interest in the art of building , got a new dimension. The first year began with deconstruction of my understanding of form and space. It helped me visualise and imagine spaces in reality and develop conceptual ideas and have a critical approach to philosophical theories. The second year was the year where i was able to put my conceptual ideas onto paper which was the biggest boost to my designing skills. Imagining spaces through limited and crisp project guide lines and translating it through models at various scales is what i learned in the third year. A change of scale was observed in the fourth year design projects, that gave me an insight to master planning. From my cumulative experience of four years, i have derstood the power of research in the field of design. Research not helps in the design process but also helps to have a deep insight of the people you design for and how it can be made practical to a larger extent.Hence i chose to untertake a research based design thesis project that looks onto the instutional needs for a street kid in a metropolitan city like Mumbai. In the following portfolio i have showcased my process and architectural abilities working backwards from now to initial years. Furthermore i have added miscellaneous and exchange works that have equally enhanced my Knowledge and skills about architecture. 2

All major cities in all states and union territories which have a population of more than five lakhs have to be provided with night shelters in a ratio of one night shelter per lakh of population. The objective of this thesis is to study the institutional spaces provided and designed for the children under the age group from 3 to 18 years in the city of mumbai and analyse thier formal and functional characteristics and thereby develop a framework for the provision of these institutions in the future.

To “attract” children to the night shelter and to accept themselves with gratitude and happiness that the institution would be their place of shelter for the coming few years of their childhood /teenage.The children are absobed by what they do and come back to it time after time

MAINENANCE Keeping the toilets outside the night shelter to reduce the foul odour coming inside the living spaces of the selter

Space required per child (sq m) = 1.5m x 1m = 1.5 sq m. Therfore, Minimum space required by the institution = 1.5 sq m x y ,where, y is the total no of children in the institution. For a child with 156 avg height, standard sleeping size should be 65 x 170

Dividing shelters into small cottages/ spaces , each having one administrative member/ house parents to look after it to reduce the load of maintenance of entire night shelter

The site should preferably not be located on the edge of a busy commercial lane or busy vehicular traffic nor under a bridge, parking stilts, basement or in a damaged building. It should have walkable access to basic amenities like BMC school, BMC dispensary/hospital, public garden and public transport.

Omni Housing Architectural Design Boisar, Maharashtra

The fourth year design project was developed as a low income housing project, set in the Boisar area of Thane district. The project entailed understanding the Plentiful government policies regarding low cost housing with accurate FSI calculations to design a detailed master plan as well as individual housing units for the area. The project looked at various combinations of 1RK, 1BHK, 1.5BHK and 2BHK flats. The concept of using loading FSI of the housing project which includes service cores like staircase,terraces as public recreational spaces for the residents was taken forward. Intermediate terrace spaces were created which gave 1RK extra space beyond their apartment area. The project aimed at combining all classes of people with open recreatinal spaces at vertical as well as horizontal levels.

Pilgrimage Centre Architectural Design Wai, Maharashtra

The design project was set in the ghats of a small religious city Wai, located in the state of Maharashtra. The concept of the design was based on the fact that how the river Krishna flowing through the ghats of Wai, was a source of water for the city and also the reciever of polluted water by the city. The design included three reed bed ponds to facilitate the flow of polluted water coming from a nearby gutter. The ponds cleaned the water step by step thereby discharging only cleaned water into the river. The building was raised above the pond depending upon the purity of water as it enters the purifying system. The design also included a multipurpose hall and an exhibition space to gather people and facilitate educating people about the natural process of purifying water.

Language & Identity Architectural Design Columbo, Sri lanka PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT

A public building representing a foreign country, especially its embassy represents that country’s people, culture and also the relationship between two countries. The new high commission embodies a long, cultural exchange India and Sri lanka promising an everlasting foreign collaboration. The design concept was based upon the relationship of the two countries and water. It creates dinstint segregation between the public, administrative and high commission’s residence due to the security of the building. The front facade invites people for various public activities facilitated by a pond and auditorium. The building facilitates different entries for different types of fuctions hence giving a sense of security.

Combining Identities Architectural Design Majuli, Assam

The Design Project of the Second Year was set in the Serene river island of Majuli, situated on the river Bhramaputra in Assam. The island is home to numerous Neo-Vaishnavites Monastries or “Sattras� as they are locally known, that they are under constant threat of being wiped out from existence due to severe erosion caused by the swelling of the Bhramaputra. The task was to find 3 objects from these Sattras and to create a language of design for the program abstracted from those objects and the sattra. The design concept was based on the vision, a child percieves in that monastry. A pavillion was designed for the children where they could practice dance, recreational activities and studies.

Creative Identity Interior Design Krvia, Mumbai The studio aimed at creating a space for a client on the basis of his identity. Our client was one of our college proffessors. Observing his activities in his daily routine was done initially followed by interviews. The conceptual Design was based upon his body posture, spontaneous nature and hectic schedule. The design aimed at giving him a work space, eating and relaxing area within the college campus. A part 1:1 model was built for the same.

Roof System Interior Design Null Bazaar,Mumbai

Null Bazaar is one of the busiest markets of South Mumbai. There are around 863 shops, most of which are vegetable stalls, fish, chicken, meat markets etc. The market has been designed in such a way that there is no sufficient light and ventilation for the vendors specially those inhabiting in the core of the market. A roofing system was proposed for the market that would facilitate ample amount of sunlight and rain water harvesting during the monsoon months. Materials used were translucent PVC sheets and hollow alluminium pipes.

ONE

Case Study Architectural Design

The Basic Design project intented for the students to understand the geometry of everyday objects. Each student selected an object of their choice for the first half of the project and made a model of the same with file card material by breaking it into multiple geometric planes. The second half of the task was about reconstructing the geometry of the object by contorting the planes to such a level that it nomore resembled the orignal object, thereby masking its orignal identity.

Arthur vyonne byod educational centre, Australia

The introductory case study project intented to make us familiar and understand architectural drawings of a well known institute and make a 1:100 model of the same. The project helped in identifying the various architectural elements and spaces used by the architect for climatic, light and ventilation and aesthetic purpose. The building given to our group was Arthur Vyonne Boyd Educational Centre in Australia. The architects were commissioned to propose an arrangement of facilities in this spectacular landscape, a retreat for artists and students. Located between cultivated farmland and natural bush, the building emphasises the differences of each condition, framing views to both. 30

CLUSTER PLAN

The studio intented to understand how a particular settlement was built according to its climatic conditions. Mykonos is a part of the Cyclades island, situated in the Aegan Sea, near Athens. Being an island it is influenced by the winds from the sea from all directions and Meltemi winds. The settlements are Asymmetrically huddled which protects it against the strong winds and pirate invasions.

Psycho Geo Maps Urban Design Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra

Nothing is experienced by itself, but always in relation to its surroundings, the sequences of events leading upto it, the memory of past experiences. Surroundings are often layered with various factors of people, activities, location etc. Amalgamation of these factors form the image of that place. An interplay of these various factors was studied in Reti Bunder, Kalyan. The edge is characterized by illegal sand dredging activities and the presence of migrant workers which creates a tense atmosphere. This place is a complex medly of multiple characters with distinct lifestyles, residing and working simultaneously.

Ecologies of Waste Exchange ahmedabad

Paldi gaam is one of the oldest settlements of new Ahmedabad. It is considered to be the heart of the city since it is the geographic centre of Ahmedabad and thus amenities like transportation, services, institutions, leisure etc become very convenient for the residents. The basic and most common built form in Paldi is the old traditional house. Most of the houses of Paldi gaam are of this typology. Although Paldi is the heart of the city, it lacked the basic idea of self sustainability and did not extract the natural resources to its maximum. An attempt to recycle one of the basic resources, water by rain water harvesting was made. The grey water is used for flushing. The second attempt was to facilitate urban farming in the village to bring the sense of self sustainability and generate income and social livelihood for the residents of Paldi gaam 34 GSEducationalVersion

The aim of the Mumbai studio was to analyse the waste management within the city and propose further development oppurtunity based on the analysis done within the A, B, C, D, E wards of the city which constituesnts the island city of Mumbai. All five wards had several hotspots which had various waste management, being different from each other. Eight hotspots were selected for detailed analysis, which show their strengths, but most importantly their weaknesses too. Intervensions were proposed right from the source of waste level to macro level like bio-gas treatment plant and sewerage treatment plant. It aimed at increasing social responsibility amongst people and introducing systems to reduce the ultimate waste going to the dumping ground.

The aim of the Banglore studio was to analyse the waste management within a complex and huge society, Sena Vihar situated in kammanhalli and propose suitable and affordable interventions for the same. The studio extented for 6 weeks ranging from analysis and research period to planning and designing followed by the execution phase. Intervensions were proposed right from micro to macro level according to the research done, interviews and concerns and satisfaction of the clients. For the execution phase, two toilets were proposed within the estimated budget for the women sweepers at the backyard of the administration block of the society. The materials used for the process was mainly waste accumulated by the society to instigate the process of waste management in the future. 38
