EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS – 26th NOVEMBER 2020

sponsored by

Dear Educators, 2020 has been a year we would all rather forget. The challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have hit the education sector particularly hard. All organisations have suffered, but perhaps none more so than schools. Those working in education found themselves on the front line, under immense pressure, but have risen to the challenge. Our School Safety award documents just a few cases of how schools have reacted with speed and professionalism. Many more examples are in practice across the country. It is now the job of the Government to provide more support to enable schools to continue to battle this virus. There is promising news on the vaccine front, which we hope can return the world to a semblance of normality next year, but further challenges remain over the winter as the health system is put under immense pressure. Education Business Awards has pioneered the recognition of school achievements since 2005. The annual Awards has reported on thousands of school success stories. Because of the pandemic, this year we are holding the awards online. We hope you find the format engaging. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors for supporting this new format, and we hope you can all check out what they have to offer. To those in education, more so than ever, we say thank you.

Yours sincerely Jason Devoto Managing Director - PSi Group

EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS – 26th NOVEMBER 2020

School Recruitment Award This Award recognises educational establishments which have invested in recruitment methods and processes to ensure a timely intake of appropriate teaching and support staff.

Partnering with the right recruiter will help unlock a world of talented teachers and support staff for your school or academy. At Randstad Education, we work hard to provide high quality teaching, leadership, support, and nonteaching staff to primary, secondary and SEN schools, multi-academy trusts and federations. As genuine market specialists since 1960, more than 85 local authorities and 2,500 schools engage Randstad teachers and support staff every week, impacting the lives of over 85,000 children every day. We take pride in our network of candidates. With a database of over 45,000 active teachers and support staff, we have the solution to your staffing needs. We believe in working together, so we’ll get to know what works for your school or academy and tailor our approach to suit your needs. We’ll work with you to help you to anticipate challenges, supporting with pipelining talent, budget planning and delivering the right candidates to your school, when you need them most. www.randstad.co.uk

H Herts 4 Learning In consultation with headteachers, Herts for Learning developed a new and extended format for the Teach in Herts Teacher Recruitment Fairs, creating more localised events around Hertfordshire. Schools offered themselves as venues in different parts of the county. Two distinct events were developed this year; a new ‘Get into Teaching Event’ kicked off the academic year in November and January, and this was followed by three focused recruitment events in February, March and May targeting NQTs and experienced teachers looking for jobs but continuing to attract individuals into teaching.

H Northern Education Trust Northern Education Trust were using more than 50 different agencies across their 21 sites to recruit temporary staff. The Crown Commercial Service’s CCS Supply Teachers and Temporary Staff in Educational Establishments framework was introduced, and a single supplier appointed, with existing suppliers that were important to the trust invited to join. This meant academies could continue to use suppliers they had an existing relationship with, but with the added peace of mind that workers would be supplied at pre-agreed rates. The trust is now benefiting from an agreed worker pay structure with complete cost transparency, including agency mark-up.

H Sturton-by-Stow Primary School, Lincoln During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sturton by Stow proved that it is possible to carry out interviews remotely and to appoint successfully by employing a process which involved shortlisting and interviewing via zoom. Following advice from HR, pre-employment checks were adapted so that they can be completed remotely whilst complying with safer recruitment. The School Business Manager held video calls with successful candidates, who displayed the necessary documents on the screen and then sent copies for verification by the local authority.

H City of Norwich School City of Norwich School has been recognised nationally for its partnership with Guildhall School. Music scholarships provided as part of the partnership enable future affordable access to music instruction for all students, regardless of background, which is reflective of the School’s commitment to creating an inclusive school which aims to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and foster partnerships will play a leading role in the wider community. Following the partnership’s launch in 2013, it founded the popular Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians which has enabled hundreds of children at the school, and in the region more broadly, to access and be inspired by musicianship, drama and technical theatre. The school was recently awarded Pearson’s prestigious Silver Award for “Impact Through Partnership”.

H Cobham Free School, Surrey Music is a key strength at Cobham with strong links to The Yehudi Menuhin School and a number of flourishing instrumental and choral groups. For its Music Award Scheme, students may apply from any locality, as distance is not a determining factor in allocating places on the Award Scheme. As the award will be given to students showing musical potential, no previous instrumental tuition will be necessary in order to apply. At Key Stage 3 all students have class music lessons taught by the Director of Music, with a wide range of topics, covering and extending beyond the requirements of the national curriculum. EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS – 26th NOVEMBER 2020

ICT Innovation Award Awarded to the educational establishment in the UK that can demonstrate innovation in its approach to teaching and deploying Information and Communication technologies that further the learning experience of its students.

As the education spectrum adapts to the changes brought about by the impact of Covid-19, more and more are discovering the benefits of utilising dedicated scanning devices as a way to aid the seamless provision of the curriculum and to help with administrative processes including back-file conversion. Digital processes are helping with engagement between all parties as well as serving as a way to share material via systems between pupils, teachers, parents or even isolated family members. Scanning documents and course material through OCR (optical character recognition), can make the scanned information easily searchable, retrievable and editable, saving time and improving productivity. Once digitised, the information can be organised and stored for anyone to access anytime and from anywhere. Finally, with the reality of data privacy documents can be easily tracked, with a clear audit path, so you know who has access, where, how and why the information is stored with visible retention periods. An ideal scanner model is the ScanSnap iX1500 for intuitive automated scanning of a range of material, the in-built touch screen with the ability to create multiple scan profiles makes operation a breeze for staff members, home users or other members of a household, it really is the smarter way to work. http://emea.fujitsu.com/ scanners-in-education marketing@uk.fujitsu.com

H City of London School Sixth Form pupil David has won a worldwide competition to conceive and pitch a technology solution to mitigate the economic, social and/or medical impacts of COVID-19. ‘HomeMade’, a recipe app that minimises supermarket trips by encouraging more efficient use of ingredients whilst in isolation, was developed in record time, and uses machine learning to recommend recipes to users based on ingredients they have at home. It also includes a customised store finder which displays local grocery stores and a recommended time to travel based on live data, to avoid peak times.

H Dartford Grammar, Kent Dartford Grammar is part of the network of 34 Computing Hubs across England which provide a focal point for computing education for primary and secondary schools, including providing training for teachers. It has been a Computing Hub since July 2019 and, as well as being a centre for local computing training for schools, the hub also has links with industry and universities. The School had been quick to switch to remote delivery of courses following the impact of coronavirus. Minister for School Standards Nick Gibb has recently praised its ambition and work with the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE).

H Park House School, Berkshire Park House School has been designated as an NCCE (National Centre for Computing Education) Hub since January this year. As of the 1st June, the Hub has trained 387 secondary school teachers to upskill their subject knowledge and 234 primary school teachers to incorporate Computing in the classroom. From January to March the hub provided face-to-face Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for local teachers across Berkshire and Hampshire to enrich their Computing curricula, integrate creativity and context and to provide guidance on developing self-efficacy in girls. The Hub has responded quickly to COVID-19 challenges in ensuring the continuity of CPD provisions to in-service teachers through online streaming of sessions with Zoom and Google Meet.

H Reading School, Berkshire As part of a PA Raspberry Pi Competition, pupils at Reading School developed a device which lets people access live data about pollution levels in their area. The device is a 3D-printed box that contains the Raspberry Pi and a variety of sensors measuring air quality, which are entirely solar powered. Having the sensor allows people to see, via their phone, the pollution levels and avoid the highly polluted and unsafe areas. The aim of the device is to show users the data and in turn encourage them to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle such as using public transport or electric cars.

Community Award This award recognises schools working in partnership with other public sector bodies (local authority, police, NHS or Fire Service) on projects that bring specific benefits to the local community.

H Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, Lancashire Darwen Aldridge Community Academy were the first to participate in the Switch IT programme,- a joint partnership with DACA and Blackburn Youth Zone focusing on the change they want to see in the town. It allows young people of all backgrounds to work together and improve their community. H Downshall Primary School, Essex The project at Downshall Primary School in Ilford is one of a growing number of intergenerational initiatives in the UK designed to bring benefits to both old and young, while helping to fill the gaps left by cuts to local community support services. Older adults experiencing isolation, depression and early dementia are referred to the project by health teams. H Campion School, Hornchurch - combined fire detection / emergency lighting At the Campion School in Hornchurch, a Roman Catholic school for boys with a mixed sixth form college, facilities managers sought to upgrade its fire safety system. Besides efficiency and running costs, the school sought networking capability without compromising the aesthetics of the site. Meeting the complex requirements needed by a large school, the new system is designed to run via a single panel, and each loop combines fire detection and emergency lighting units. These features mean facilities managers can save on cabling and labour costs, keep day-to-day running costs down and manage maintenance more effectively.

H Southfields Academy, London - Body Cameras Southfields, part of a multi-academy trust, teaches some 1300 pupils in London and has fostered a culture of mutual respect among pupils. Since last year, four teachers across different parts of the school have been wearing body cameras. When the camera is switched on to film an incident, the default option means that the footage is encrypted and it cannot be edited prior to being uploaded to a secure Cloud account. Their presence has helped to de-escalate confrontations now that pupils realise their actions are going to be captured on film if they don’t stop the inappropriate behaviour. Since their introduction, the cameras have already had an impact in helping staff defuse confrontations with unruly pupils and can assist gathering evidence for the police if needed.

H Swanshurst School, Birmingham - CCTV Rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, Swanshurst School has more than 1800 pupils aged 11 to 19. On the busy site, the ability of the senior team to see who is entering or leaving, and to remotely monitor corridors and lobby areas, is crucial to fostering a safe and welcoming learning environment. The system comprises over 100 cameras which cover most of the school’s internal areas. The cameras use Power over Ethernet (PoE) to eliminate the need for extra cabling, while the hierarchical connection between the cameras at the NVRs further guarantees the most efficient method of cabling. Footage can be recorded in high-definition and viewed on smartphones. In the event of network instability or failure at the school, the cameras’ SD card begins recording and automatically transfers the data after recovery, eliminating the risk of gaps in footage.

Presented to the educational establishment that can provide a first class learning environment and modern, flexible facilities for students of art & craft.

H Holy Cross Primary School, East Sussex At Holy Cross, a two year process undertaking the Artsmark scheme has broadened their use of the arts as a tool for exploring the curriculum, themselves and their beliefs. During Arts lessons, pupils appear more willing to ‘own’ learning; their dependence upon adults is lessening, and they are thinking in more creative ways. Arts Week gave older students the opportunity to work with and encourage their younger peers, and the school saw the benefits of producing a written response, which had firstly been explored through music, dance, drama and the visual arts. The school has also drawn on the expertise of its own staff members, including the headteacher, who has a BA Hons in Fashion and Textile Design and worked in Europe as a designer before becoming a teacher.

H Ripple Primary School, Essex Ripple Primary School has recently been awarded the coveted Gold Artsmark Award. Work towards achieving Gold level has provided inspirational opportunities in many areas including fine art, dance, drama, music, pottery and poetry writing; all of which have included the essential elements of performance and exhibition, which the school believes make students more confident. Students took part in a number of creative activities, including using their arts and crafts skills to give the school hall an Egyptian makeover. The increased focus on creativity at the school has led to a number of after school clubs starting up, including Pottery, Theatre, Recorder, Choir and Dance.

STEM Award Presented to the educational establishment that has excelled in the provision of a first class environment for teaching STEM subjects including Maths, Technology, Engineering and Sciences.

H Cardinal Langley RC High School, Manchester With Greater Manchester’s thriving STEM community, Cardinal Langley is proudly preparing students to enter the science, technology, engineering and maths industries as they develop the right skills for the future. The school recently represented the North West at the ‘Race for the Line’ national rocket car competition. Three year 7 students travelled to RAF Wittering to compete against the other regional finalists to design and build a rocket car to travel over 60 mph. The project won the STEM Project of the Year Award accolade at the 2019 Educate Awards.

H Castleview Primary School, Edinburgh In November last year, Castleview Primary School’s project ‘People like me can do STEM’ was named as the overall winner of the 2019 Rolls Royce Science Prize. Based in an area of multiple deprivation in Edinburgh, the school recognised that their pupils’ science capital was not the same as others and saw it as their job to build it. The aim of the project was to raise aspirations and make pupils believe that they can do STEM through a three pronged approach – young people, their families and community, and it sought to create on-going partnerships with local STEM institutions. The project included a pupil lead science newspaper, science clubs, teacher CPD, a parent/children STEM challenge and a community science festival.

H Downlands Community School, West Sussex The Downlands Community School coordinates and manages the Sussex Science Learning Partnership (SLP), which provides subject specific continuous professional development (CPD) for primary and secondary schools and FE providers in the area. Three 4Clubs running at Downlands Community School have raised the profile of STEM subjects nationwide. The clubs are highly collaborative and provide opportunities for cross-curricular activity, for one project the club worked with the foreign language department when students had to design and present the project in German. The school was recognised at the STEM Inspiration Awards 2019 in November last year.

It has been lovely recognition for our school. - Sharon Pascoe, Head of Fochriw Primary School www.educationbusinessuk.net

In October 2018, Great Western Academy became the first new secondary school in the area for more than a decade. Its environmental performance exceeds the requirements of building regulations and local planning policy. The fabric first approach maximises energy efficiency, high levels of insulation and low air permeability together with optimum area to volume ratio. High levels of day lighting reduces energy consumption and improves the concentration of the learners.

H Harris Academy Sutton A new £40 million building makes Harris Academy Sutton the first secondary school in the country to meet the Passivhaus energy performance standard for the design and construction of energy efficient buildings. This uses around 80% less energy than equivalent buildings of traditional design. Concrete construction is used for the ground slab and first floor, with a timber structure above, and timber cladding throughout. The main halls are differentiated by copper cladding, which is entirely recyclable. Generously sized assembly and sports halls can be used out of hours by the local community.

H High Weald Academy, Kent The High Weald Academy building is one of the most state of the art learning environments in the area and boasts 69 climate controlled classrooms and offices, which includes eight science laboratories, three art rooms, five ICT suites and the purpose built drama studio. The commercial farm attached to the school supports students’ learning across the curriculum and enriches their experience, building confidence and leadership, commitment and care.

H Wroughton Academy, Norfolk The new building symbolises the merging of the two schools under the Wroughton Academy umbrella by providing a new front and central focus point to the school, securely linking the two existing campuses. The building itself houses the new reception for both schools, a generous front of house space which can be configured flexibly for presentations, informal teaching, exhibitions, etc., and office and meeting rooms for the school’s support staff. Combining the two campuses with this linked space is designed to help develop a greater sense of community by enabling infant and junior pupils to meet and learn together.

“The Education Business Awards showcase the unsung heroes of the education sector. While teachers don’t get nearly as much praise as they deserve, those responsible for overseeing the essential aspects of running a school such as recruiting staff, catering, security and procurement most certainly don’t. These awards are a important contribution towards changing that, and should be marked as an important date in the educational calendar.” Patrick Hayes, Director, BESA www.educationbusinessuk.net

H Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, Kent Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys approached Schools Buying Club for a second time after already having used the organisation for a previous cleaning tender. Their contract had naturally come to an end and they were looking to procure a new one with greater focus on supplier management and oversight of staff. They also needed to include a new building component into the contract. The tender resulted in a sophisticated audit management and a biometric time and attendance system; foundation living wage was also factored into the costs to help future staff retention.

Developed by doctors to prevent stress-related illnesses, Emotional Logic teaches a medical view that emotions are healthy physical preparations for change, not merely feelings that get in the way of reasoning. If they cannot fulfill their useful purposes to energise adjustments, however, their emotional chemistry turns instead into physical or mental illnesses, and inner drives to socially disruptive behaviour. All of this can be reversed when people learn to activate their inbuilt Emotional Logic to build inner strength. Over fifty schools in Plymouth and Devon have enthusiastically integrated Emotional Logic in whole school community programmes. We are ready to roll this programme out nationally. Emotional Logic moves staff on from being trauma-informed to being trauma-responsive. We first train an Emotional Logic Facilitator (the school’s ELF!) who sustains the method and skills in the whole school community system. A day workshop trains all the classroom and pastoral staff for stress reduction using the healthy emotional language of adjustment to setback and disappointment. Teachers use six lesson plans to teach the pupils Emotional Logic, who then take it home to their parents and guardians. Parents evenings, and peer support training follow. Attendance Officers are empowered to facilitate change in home dynamics, as well as Parent Support Advisers. The ELF provides individual support for needy pupils and parents. One secondary school recorded a 42 per cent reduction in disruptive behaviour as a result. www.elcentre.org 01752 892455

EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS – 26th NOVEMBER 2020

Outstanding Progress Award (Primary) Presented to the UK Primary School that has made outstanding progress in the management of its facilities, finances and human resources and can demonstrate an increase in the educational performance of the school.

H Clore Shalom Primary School, Herfordshire Two years after a ‘requires improvement’ Ofsted rating, rapid progress has been made at Clore Shalom Primary. Well-planned reading lessons continue to develop the skills of older pupils, and recent SAT results places the school as one of the highest achieving state funded primary schools in Hertfordshire. Earlier this year, it achieved a ‘good’ rating in all categories including overall effectiveness, quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and early years provision.

H Elaine Primary, Kent Before being taken over by The Inspire Partnership in May 2018, Elaine Primary was ranked in the bottom 10% of worst performing schools in the country. Over the last two years, Head of School Dean Brewer and his team have turned it around. The latest marks for Key Stage 2 have soared from 35% in 2018 to 65% in 2019. This success has been attributed to a focus on relationships with pupils and parents. The school currently enjoys a zero rate of exclusion.

H New Park Primary Academy, North Yorkshire A rapid transformation at New Park has seen the Academy rise to the third highest placed school in North Yorkshire and highest in Harrogate. The latest OFSTED report noted that outcomes for children in the SATs tests more than doubled since 2018. The introduction of a Community Farm and an all-encompassing vision to place Reading and Books at the very heart of the curriculum model make New Park a highly unique and special environment for learning.

H Perry Court E-ACT Academy, Bristol In 2017, Perry Court was the worst performing school in Bristol and placed in the bottom 1% of the country’s primary schools. A dramatic turnaround now sees Perry Court ranked in the top 1% of schools nationally for both attainment and progress in reading, writing and mathematics, a particularly impressive achievement given that half of all pupils at the academy are from disadvantaged backgrounds. A new academy building costing over £9m is scheduled for completion in May 2022 and will provide a further 630 primary places.

HStowting Church of England Primary School, Kent Since being appointed in September 2018, the headteacher has swiftly improved the school. Consequently, pupils’ achievement has improved across all year groups and teachers now teach a broad range of subjects. Phonics teaching is now an integral part of every school day and pupils are encouraged to have a say in the way the school is run - they recently campaigned to have sensors fitted on all lights in school to save electricity.
