HB | RE-EVO III

Aboriginal middens are scattered in the lee of the headlands, the lake provided shellfish and easy fishing at it’s mouth, the marshes, birdlife and marsupial tucker. Folklore has it that a young native girl swam the lake neck to save white settlers from a cabin fire. In her honour the area is named: NARRABEEN

The Northern Beaches were a single community stretching from Manly to Palm Beach. The focal point since the 60’s for an innocent surfing fraternity spread over more than 30 beaches, reefs and points that, at any given time in those formative years, had more magazines, film makers, photographers,, shapers, factories, pro surfers and surf journalists than any 30k stretch on the planet….including the North Shore of Oahu. This concentrate of embryonic modern Surfing once included more than 20 surfboard factories centred on Brookvale. Media included magazines and movie makers, photographers, world champions …..seven, contests like the Coke and HB / O&E Pro-Junior, clubs (Narrabeen, DY, Manly Pacific, Newport Plus, QBC) and journalist/ editors. In the 70’s Sydney’s northern beach community was the meeting place for multi-faceted men and women of personality, character and conviction. And on any day with surf, ritual would shift from the southern cliffs of the Bower, to Queenie, or, D.Y. Point, Northie, Newport Peak, South Av., the Wedge and to Barrenjoey at the end of the peninsula. The results were in print, or, on film in a month, two, or, three. Showcasing ground breaking surfing, surfer/shaper designs, or, the ‘deep and meaningfuls’ of credentialed journalism produced by a closeted coastline not ready for medium density housing or localism inhibitions.

Over time the larger ‘Community’ imploded as population grew and has balkanised into enclaves bordered by each beach’s headlands. These ‘minicommunities’ are tribal, but, more fragile and still joined like hand-holding paper dolls. Located at the mid-point of this still golden stretch is North Narrabeen. Where it is not so rare to see the world’s best appear on better days….Tommy, Barton, Damian and icons, Simon, Mark Warren…..! The Tour takes away the younger blokes, Davey, Hedgy and ilk, they cameo between flights. Almost everyday there is a shaper testing new design and refining for the world’s best, polishing their surfing and equipment. As with all passionate lifestyles, there exists underlying committed strength at all of the breaks, in those who have built their lives around their daily surf, and work. Unsung heroes and their mates, from kids to tradies to retirees, on it, the moment Northie or any of the beaches break. There is no surf watch camera at Narrabeen, five (and counting) have disappeared, a petition voiced communal distaste for web cast mayhem at a beach that is crowded enough.

Top Right. Carpark Rights: are the stuff of legend......Butch Cooney was one of the first to paddle down from the lefts, where the old clubhouse bent offshore winds blowing sand into the break. One of Shaun’s sessions lives in memory, when Surfabout held a round out front. Big Cat once ruled and every Narrabeen surfer remembers their magic Carrrrrie days. Max Taglione Middle Right. Alley Rights: what can be said? Playstation bred, action and shred. Jaymes Triglone Bottom Right. Then, there are the Lefts: ranging from frustrating windblown mess, to gnarly ball tearing barrels of fun. It can take two, or, three attempts to paddle-out being belted by a clean-up sets. There are still days, big days, when four or five are out almost alone.... hooking point to Carpark long lines, headed for the next postcode. Matt Dunsmore

The monthly club contest is an intrinsic routine most Northern Beaches have on the first Sunday of every month. Parents still competing and immersing their ‘luckier than most’ offspring in the comraderie of what is essential Australian surfing history. Narrabeen Boardriders is and remains the most successful club locally and nationally. And on those days ‘after the before workers’ and ‘before the day-offers’, you can find yourself with only three or four blokes out, a nice little swell and conditions more akin to where you want to be, not where you are. Mornings that are a taste re-enforcing the faith, for the truly faithful.

All Hot Buttered Surfboards are tested at North Narrabeen 3

RAINBOW ORIGINALS

Drifta III A radical stab at creating an alternative to the Thruster and twin fin revolutions, TF’s Drifta Series added trailer fins to double wing width and single fin drive placing emphasis on speed skating and lip-line flow. Main features include TF’s classic single-to-double concave, running a decade ahead of the New School. Fluted and heavily pinched wings, a stubby swallow, or, chopped square tail, a round nose and mini side fins giving the Drifta it’s almost spaceship-like appearance. A 7 ½” single fin completed the revolution to hotdog happiness. Driftas hide a typically uncompromising design capable of extraordinary down-the-line speed and sudden breaks into vertical angles. Truly a board for transitions, single to tri-fins, speed to modern performance surfing. Guide: 5’6 – 6’10 XXXL Driftas at 7’6 – 8’0 are cool too……

Double Wing Swallow A typical driving high performance surfboard for clean powerful waves. This design derives from earlier work on wing pins and swallows in Hawaiian and South African waters, evolved into the “good - wave” allrounder that no HB team rider dared leave home without. Originally developed to for more planing area under the backfoot by adding a second wing to the round swallow single wing version, skating over fat and flat spots added to the value of a narrower tail through the wing series. A win in the Australian Titles in 1975 underlined the credentials of the wing series which made it ideal for fitting into barrels from Burleigh Heads to Uluwatu (where TF also won the Om-Bali Pro in1980) and the hollower smaller wave spots on the North Shore of Oahu. Guide: 5’10 – 6’10

Sunset Gun During the ‘70’s it was hard to find a more influential Australian surfer/ shaper in Hawaii than Terry Fitzgerald. His Sunset Guns introduced concaves with spiral vee and wings in well documented sessions which epitomised the style and speed of the short board revolution. The board’s roots are in the first 6’10 ‘wing’ flyer roundtail proto-types and the first Hot Buttered Surfboards launched at Narrabeen’s Carpark Rights, then taken to the world stage at Sunset’s West Peak. As the weapon of choice for ‘Mr Body Torque’, the gun versions were designed for speed with the added ability to break lines after long fades and bottom turns. Guide: 7’4 - 9’0

Single fin surfing is personified in the art of ‘feeling’ the wave. Smooth lines, positive single fin power and carving snaps. The Magic Egg is based on the boards Steve Wilson rode into the Top 16 during the ‘80’s. A traditional area pin with square wing, concave to vee and tucked rails. Created to feel the freedom of single fin power.

6’6 x 20 1/4” x 2 3/4” - 35.87lts

Feel acceleration from the takeoff, with a fuller plan shape and a deep single concave under the back foot. Combined with a clean squash tail and extra rocker the EMR power bights with great release of the top.

Refined with more forward curve in the planshape, and with extra foam under the chest the K9 offers great paddle power. The clean roundtail and single to double concave add up to a smooth all round ride with either a quad or tri set-up.

The first wing boards were roundtails (1972) with extra area added under the backfoot with the addition of the wing concept. That area allows skating over fat spots and a point on which to break tracks and snap. The swallow version came in 1973 lifting performance to another dimension. New age designs have refined rocker and thickness distribution and original side fins adding extra drive and pivot power.

6’6 x 20 1/2” x 2 3/4”

Developed from the original swallow wing design with a second wing added (1974) for even more planning area under the back foot. That version won TF an Australian Title in 1975. The Double Wing Flyer has updated with rocker lines and features either a 7.5 or 8” TF wide based single fin for drive.

HB - MODELS Over the decades, HB shapers and surfers have worked to create surfboards for all levels of ability. Individual expression and the surfing experience is only limited by the surfboard under your feet, and the waves you are prepared to ride. HB’s goal is to build surfboards that work best when you need them – when waves are the best. All of the HB Model computer cut-files are continually refined using feedback from HB’s surfers who test all models in one of the world’s toughest arenas, North Narrabeen. HB’s shapers work with the latest computer software ensuring accuracy and the capacity to reproduce all models to the highest standard and accuracy.

Boyd Purdy has surfed the West Australian coast for more than 40 years,

Our CN Customs use Australian Bennett foam exported to our dedicated manufacturer. The CN factory uses only the best imported raw materials and is continually researching best practice production techniques in both polyester and epoxy construction. The result is quality, performance and choice.

and now has over 25 years in the surfboard industry. Boyd surfed his way to representing WA 4 times and uses his enormous experience as the basis for his custom shaped boards where each individual’s requirements are focused. Surfers; TF, Matt Dunsmore and Josh Castleden

HB’s longest serving proven shape is now re-defined with fuller nose providing entry speed and stability and a savage swallow tail for aggressive surfing in the pocket. Single to double concave adds to the high performance and is a wicked addition to any quiver because of all-round versatility. Extra tail area allows a five fin set up for tri or quad surfing.

The re-designed H-Bomb features a new tail and re-defined nose while maintaining flat rocker, a forward wide point and parallel rails through the balance point to the tail for plenty of drive over the deadest of sections. The combination of smooth V flow area pin tail and rail to rail speed generates amazing maneuverability. Extra tail area allows for five fins, tri and quad sessions.

MPT Size Guidelines: All boards are handshaped to individual specification

The Man’s Professional Toy at 5’9’’ x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4 is a clean rounded square with single concave bottom setup. The MPT features a relaxed entry rocker for ease of paddling in and medium kick in the tail rocker for tight turns in the pocket. Speed and drive are generated by the single concave which begins in the nose and runs through to the last few inches of the tail then blending out in the tail kick. Generally a MPT is set-up as a thruster, however, a tri-quad set-up is available.

EQUIPMENT WITH LIFE EPS Core / EPOXY Resin Consistent resin to fiberglass ratios result in lighter and stronger construction with less denting or creasing. Maximum Epoxy Flex/Strength Factor is created with 3 layers of fibreglass on the deck, and 2 on the bottom. Consistant release Flex is controlled by a hardwood stringer. The result: HB EPOXY Models that are light, strong and flexible. When repairing…......yes, only use epoxy resin!

HB | RE-EVO III

THE TOY “I first met Patrick Juventin in Hawaii one November toward the end of the 70s. He was there searching out surfboard supplies and picking up shaping tips. Jaded with the North Shore’s door-banging machinations, it was pretty easy to say ‘yes’ to Patrick when he invited me to visit Tahiti on my way home. Even if it meant missing that year’s Duke Contest.” Terry Fitzgerald

Terry continues: In those days getting to and from Hawaii, the airlines all island hopped with at least a stop in Fiji, and if you were really lucky, you got New Zealand and American Samoa thrown in. So, I took a left turn at Pago Pago and ended up in Papeete after leaving a flat North Shore, unsure. Becoming great friends with Patrick and Robert Tanseau was easy. Annual surf trips to ridiculously beautiful uncrowded reefs on the outer islands combined with helping the growing surfing community. Vastly improving performances from the Tahitians added to the mystique of surfing new places, with new friends. Patrick set up a small factory in a shed attached to his garage at Faaa. He would get me over for surf trips and to shape a few boards. Patrick was instrumental in starting the Tahitian board industry for the local surfers, Arsene Hoehare, Wilfred Sanford, Poto, Manoa David and a host of champions. We used to ship Patrick his blanks, and that’s where the machine idea started. Even though they were boxed, the blanks could and did arrive twisted. So Patrick in his precise and patient manner starts thinking: “How can I put true rocker back into twisted blanks?”

One of the World’s first shaping machines and a Tahitian surfboard revolution

Patrick Juventin: Well concerning our shaping toy - the shaping machine, we started to think about it about 1980 because of the blanks problems. I did the first drawings on paper during 1984 and started to set up the first prototype in early 1985. The first test was during September 1985. I built the Shaping Toy in Tahiti in December 1985, and then in January 1986 I flew to Australia carrying all the most important parts. I spent a few days there with one of Terry’s welder friends who helped me to do the frames. Then Terry took me to his uncle to build the rocker templates in plywood. I remember doing one of his favourite concave board for Poto. That very first day testing in Australia; Terry was smiling, and very happy playing with it. Terry has his new “Toy”. He he he he. We both look like children at that time. Getting this “Toy” to work would help us to do faster and accurate rockers with precise thickness for the future. But, we still had a problem at that time; it was to get a good wide router blade. Terry custom built one for me, it was a 4“ wide carbide blade that had many blades. The “Toy” worked much better then. At the beginning, in early 1986, we were using a flat trolley for bottom and deck cutting. We fine tuned the trolley by changing the wheels and building one specially curved for deck cutting in mid 1986. We used the flat trolley for the bottom. One of the shapers who used the machine there at Hot Buttered, Wayne Cleggett if I remember correctly, he helped with the curved deck trolley and a newer wide blade. Today, because of the computer shaping machines, our “Toy” took the name of “Surfboard Profile Machine” I think it was the right name for it, that “Toy” was the beginning for the machines.

Terry Fitzgerald: The result of course was that we could send paper templates to Patrick and he could keep up to date with the latest rocker and curve developments in Australia. From that time, and Patrick’s efforts, Tahitian surfing was ignited. Poto could get our curves exactly in the boards Patrick shaped and finished in Faaa. Ju-Ju also ran the Tahitian Federation and was instrumental in separating Tahiti from the French Federation. Vetea went on to win the Junior World Title and then spent more than ten years on the Pro Tour and WCT. The rest is history in more ways than one. The force that is Tahitian surfing now, and of course, CAD machines that are shaping up to 85% of most surfboards. With Patrick’s first “machine”, after set-up and milling, there was very little actual time saved in shaping a board, but, what we did achieve was beautiful accuracy with rocker and thickness. The “Toy” is off to the Surfworld Museum in Torquay after gathering dust on the roof of BM’s shaping bay for the past ten or so years. Putting it together again, well, I almost didn’t want to let it go. So simple, almost primitive, yet so effective. And today, ever more complex, surfboard shaping really is experiencing the rise of the machines.

5’10 x 24” x 2 7/8” – 41 ltrs

The Slab is an exciting, small to medium wave board that combines speed with easy, radical turning and lip bouncing.

The Performer is the ultimate board for small, medium and large waves and where major turns can be achieved at maximum speed.

In the beginning…… back in the age when all sorts of surfing equipment launched along Sydney’s beaches, two of HB’s first sanders were kneeboarders. We all know that a shaper is only as good as his sander, so, the leap from grinding edges and fins was not that giant for Steve Artis and later Albert Whiteman stepping into the shaping bay. The kneeboard tradition continued through Mike Novakov and Simon Farrer, multiple Australian and World Title winners, surfers who have a completely different perspective on wave-riding. HB is proud to be launching a kneeboard re-generation with two eclectic models designed by Michael Novakov. Nov is a 4 times World Kneeboard Surfing Champion and has arguably ridden more waves at North Narrabeen than anyone. His radical and innovative surfing has been instrumental in developing these two unique designs.

SLIDE is the new collection of surf skateboards designed and developed in an exclusive collaboration between SLIDE Surf Skate, Hot Buttered International (Australia) and Skis Sancheski at the Sancheski Factory in Irun (Northern Spain). Sancheski is one of the first European skateboard manufacturers and has been designing and building sporting goods since 1934. Starting with textile and leather, product evolved into snow skis, mountain gear and finally the adaption of exclusive Sancheski technology and know-how to skateboards from 1966. Sancheski now has 50 years of experience in skateboard design and production, all of which has been applied to re-engineering SLIDE trucks and organically generate sales worldwide. Hot Buttered, based in Australia, specialises in premium surfing equipment and has been at the forefront of surfing and bodyboard development since 1971. HB’s first skateboard production commenced in 1987 with the patented HB vertical pin truck and ‘OZE’ decks. HB now contributes deck design and templates underlining the true surfing roots of SLIDE.

SLIDE Surf Skate trucks are the passion of Taiwanese founder June Lui. Working with young surf-skaters, June’s creative vision oversaw the development of the ‘spring loaded multi-directional truck’, which was the genesis of the truck that powers SLIDE today. Research, testing, engineering and development using only the best tempered steel and moulding methods ensure the very best production techniques for SLIDE boards. In 2016, Sancheski SL and Hot Buttered International are focused on innovation and distribution where only the very best quality provides the core of SLIDE’s ‘fun & function’. SLIDE brings the spirit of surfing to the city. Practice turns and trim, skate and surf maneouvres on concrete, either flat or at the bowl. The 2016/17 version of the SLIDE truck is fully adjustable allowing rigidity to be set simply by tightening or loosening the spring nut, allowing ‘fun & function’ to suit all rider’s skill levels being beginner, average or professional. Experience the same feelings as riding waves, making Slide the perfect tool to practice and improve surfing skills. Beware, SLIDE is addictive!

| OZE SKATEBOARDS

SKATEBOARDS

An integral part of the surfing experience is sliding concrete. From those first roller skate wheels nailed onto a piece of 4 x 2 and a ride down the driveway, Terry Fitzgerald has kept a weather eye on skateboarding. Through the skate explosion of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s the same lines laid in Dogtown pools were morphed at Velzyland and Alley Rights. The Zephyr Boys, Jay, Alva, Stacey, CR were watching Bertlemen, Liddell and TF and vice versa, all carving very different lip lines. In the mid ‘80’s, Paul Burnett and his Dad designed, patented and built a vertical pin truck for the first Hot Buttered Skateboards. Over five years, Kye Fitz’s Raised by Wolves skate experience combined the art of HB’s rainbow surfboards with Canadian maple and new age technology producing the HB Streetfighter, Shooter and Longboard range of skateboards. Now, those original trucks are back on a collection of short and long HB OZE Skateboards featuring the original artwork and Martyn Worthington classics. The original vertical pin truck has been re-cast and ready to ride for the ultimate surfing street experience.

BODYBOARDS

At Hot Buttered our philosophy for designing and building bodyboards is simple: we take only the finest grade materials, integrate them with team tested templates, and incorporate the latest in construction technologies to create high performance wave riding craft worthy of the HB name. We’ve lived by these three key principles for the past 29 years of bodyboard production.

JAMES KATES SIGNATURE Katsey represents the future of multi-faceted professionalism in bodyboarding. Surfer, gypsy, percussionist and photographer/video creator, his signature model defines his ride of choice. 40, 40.5, 41, 41.5 PP Core Surlyn PP Slick Slick Mesh WaveCushion Air Deck IXLPE Inner Rail / CelluCushion Outer Rail Bumpers Nose Bulbs EFG Stringer Channels / Crescent Tail

Ivan Pulic IP-ISS Ivan Pulic has been quietly building a rep for high flying and fearless lip launches. His Indo adventures are legendary. To attack to the max, Ivan has tweaked his Shred sleds and added the ISS stringer system to maximise his 2017 ride’s ability to be there everytime. 39, 40, 41, 42 PP Core Surlyn PP Slick Slick Mesh WaveCushion Air Deck IXLPE Inner Rail / CelluCushion Outer Rail Bumpers / Nose Bulbs / Channels ISS EFG Stringer System Crescent Tail

FLYING V The Flying V combines snowboard and surfing ski-tails in using reverse curves in the trailing edge of the boards planshape. As wave face curves, the rail edge straightens and locks in for high speed drive in the fastest of sections. The swallow tail is strengthened by two short rail stringers either side of the centre for power and punch. 40.5, 41.5 PP Core Surlyn PP Slick Slick Mesh WaveCushion Air Deck IXLPE Inner Rail / CelluCushion Outer Rail Bumpers / Nose Bulbs / Channels EFG Tri -Stringer System Swallow Tail

CORK BELLY Nature’s waterproofed and sustainable raw materials allow a ride that is more about feel and flying rather than 21st century octane. With PP core and high quality surlyn slick, the Cork skinned core provides new age performance and a feel for freedom like no other. 40, 41, 42 PP Core Surlyn PP Slick Slick Mesh CORK - EVA skin Air Deck IXLPE Inner Rail / CORK - EVA skin Rail Bumpers Nose / Bulbs / EFG Stringer Channels / Crescent Tail
