PILRIG St PAUL’S CHURCH

OCTOBER 2010

Dear Fellow-members, As we approach the time for Harvest Thanksgiving we are perhaps more conscious of difficulties associated with our own food supply than has been the case for many years. The world economic recession together with the major rise in wheat prices caused by poor crops in Russia and the rise in fuel costs is meaning that the cost of basic food items is rising. This situation, of course on a far greater scale, has been the reality of life for people in developing countries for generations. Now we are sensing more clearly what that means! Perhaps for too long we have taken for granted that we will have access to cheap food. Harvest, we are reminded, is truly a time to give thanks to God. In the midst of the many forces that can negatively influence the production of crops and their availability, it is not a given that we will always have enough to eat. Again we can learn from our Christian brothers and sisters from the developing countries. Let us be truly thankful and acknowledge God’s love and providence in enabling us to have the fruits of harvest. And let us remember those in our own land and across the world who continue to have little, through no fault of their own. Let us, who have enough and to spare, be ready to share more generously through our produce gifts at our Harvest Thanksgiving service and also through money gifts to support the work of Christian Aid. I look forward to seeing you all at our Harvest Service on Sunday 10th October. Vocal Vibes – the children’s choir led by Martin Ritchie our Director of Music will be taking part. Let us all give thanks to God for his generous providing and his wonderful love that fill our lives with so much joy and hope. May God richly bless you and your loved ones. John

The magazine Thank you to everyone for producing magazine material early this month. It has been a great help. Material for November should be with me by October 24th, please. It’s great to have so much input from the organisations, but some are missing! Please let me have details of your programme so that all Church activities are publicised via the magazine. Catriona Blackwood

Flower Diary See the first page for details of this month’s contributors. Thank you to everyone who so willingly donates flowers. These are very much appreciated by everyone who receives them. Also thanks to everyone who delivers the flowers Sunday by Sunday. Marlyn Tait.

LORNE PRIMARY HARVEST SERVICE Lorne Primary School will be holding their Harvest Service in Pilrig St Paul’s Church on Thursday 14th October at 10.30am. It is always uplifting to hear the children sharing in this service. Gifts are given in to school by the children and their families and are then shared out among some of the elderly and house bound people in the community. Try to come along! You’ll find it a good experience.

BACKCARE COFFEE MORNING This will take place on Saturday 23rd October from 10.30am to 12.30pm, in the session room. There will be stalls with home baking, second-hand books, bric-a-brac and a tombola - also a lucky ticket prize. Tickets will be available form Fiona Rankin from Sunday 9th October - priced at £1 for adults - includes tea or coffee and biscuits. Entry is free for children. We look forward to helping you and, like last year help us make it another great success.

ADVANCE NOTICE – A CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS The Forum will be repeating this very successful event, once again in aid of Christian Aid, on Tuesday 14th December at North Leith Church, time to be confirmed. Martin Ritchie

VOCAL VIBES We began our new session in parallel with the school term and Vocal Vibes 2 is sounding good! We were happy to welcome along two new members, Ellie and John, and are now working towards involvement in the Harvest Festival and our inhouse production of the musical, Oliver. We had a number of primary 4 children in Vocal Vibes 1 last year, who have now graduated to Vocal Vibes 2 so I’ve been out and about to local schools to promote the groups and hope to welcome some new P3+4 recruits. Vocal Vibes sang “Consider Yourself” at Lorne Primary’s weekly assembly on Friday 10th September, accompanying Abigail MacDonald’s excellent solo . They did a good job – it’s quite a thought to stand up in front of the entire school and sing! Thanks as ever to Lily and the team of helpers for giving up their time to assist with supervision. We are always looking for more helpers for the supervision of rehearsals – please consider this. It’s not limited to active members of the congregation, so this could be a chance to involve someone who is on the roll but hasn’t been to church in a while. Think about it!

A WEDDING IN THE VOCAL VIBES FAMILY! Vocal Vibes were very excited to be invited to sing at the wedding of Rhoda (Chloe Myles’ mum) to Patrick on Saturday 4th September at Pilrig St Paul’s. We sang a number of short and catchy world music songs, partly reflecting Rhoda’s Ghanaian ancestry, and the first verse of Amazing Grace. It was a very happy day, and we all trooped down through Leith to a tea party at the Park View Hotel straight after the service with members of the choir hailing their pals on the way and announcing “it’s Chloe’s mum’s wedding.” Interesting concoctions of fizzy orange juice, herbal tea, sugar cubes and milk were discovered to make you feel a bit dicey!!

Although Vocal Vibes is not a directly missionary activity in the traditional sense, it is great when pastoral connections can be made and this was just one example of how our relationship with Vocal Vibes is developing.

MEET, EAT AND SING AT DUNFERMLINE ABBEY Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Scotland are organising this event in the magnificent setting of Dunfermline Abbey on Saturday 23rd October from 3.30-7pm. A group from the choir at PSP along with friends are planning to take part and enjoy singing great music along with a larger group. The conductor is going to be Matthew Beetschen from Dunblane Cathedral and the organist is Norman Mitchell, of Dunfermline Abbey, who some will remember as organist of Pilrig and Dalmeny Street many years ago! The format is that you turn up, music is chosen according to the final group on the day and we learn a number of items. It’s very sociable and a meal is provided – no formal charge, but donations are invited. The event is suitable for all ages and abilities, so if you fancy coming do let me know. We plan to share transport for the trip. Martin Ritchie (07984 466 855)

JOINT CHOIRS SERVICE AT BROUGHTON ST MARY’S Our choir has been invited to join up with Broughton St Mary’s and Greyfriars Kirk choirs to sing at a service for the season of All Saints on Sunday 7th November at 6.30pm in Broughton St Mary’s Church. It would be great if some of the Pilrig St Paul’s congregation could come along and support us in this venture. It’ll be great to meet up with folks from these choirs and congregations and to sing music that we wouldn’t normally tackle on our own. The three musical directors, Nancy Crook, Henry Wallace and myself will share the labour of playing/directing on the day. Broughton St Mary’s is a beautiful church and well worth a visit in its own right, particularly to see the amazing new development of the cellar area of the church.

DOORS OPEN DAY At the time of writing, this hasn’t happened yet, but we’d like to thank everyone who volunteered to be welcoming stewards, to give tours, to bake and serve in the cafe and to anyone who brought people along on the day. Many hands make light work! Martin Ritchie

PILRIG PARLOUR The Pilrig Parlour raised the sum of £2459 this year. (That includes donations of £170) I would like to thank Jean and all the committee for their support during and before the parlour, also Alex and Mark who kept us supplied with toasties over the three weeks. Thanks also to the people who came every day to make and donate the soup - it was much appreciated, also all the ladies who made and donated the sweets for us. Thanks go to everyone who helped either in the kitchen or serving and clearing tables, without their support the parlour could not take place. We were a bit disappointed with the lack of support we get from the congregation. I would like to say a special thanks to Ronnie Cameron for going shopping for us most days. It was a big help to me for Ronnie to go for heavy shopping as I had no transport for 2 weeks. Thanks once again to everyone. Irene Wexelstein Convenor I am sure everyone in the congregation joins me in a very big thank you for the huge effort put in by Irene and the team, Editor

THANKS Mrs Bunty Munro writes to “thank the Minister and congregation of Pilrig St Paul’s for the lovely flowers I received recently. They were very much appreciated.” Irene and Maurice Wexelstein would like to thank the church for the flowers they recently received. Fiona Rankin would like to thank the minister and my friends at Pilrig St Paul’s for the lovely flowers I received recently when my back problem flared up again. They certainly cheered me up as chronic pain can send you into depression and it helps to know that people are thinking and praying for you.

THE GUILD The new winter session of the Guild begins on Tuesday 12th October at 2 pm in the Session Room when we are having an Afternoon Tea. Do come along and join our happy band of members - everyone is welcome. October
