PILRIG ST PAULS CHURCH MAGAZINE – SEPTEMBER 2010
PILRIG St PAUL’S CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2010 Dear Fellow-members, As I write this, Edinburgh is still busy with the Festival and the Pilrig Parlour is into its third week. We have just been reminded that the Military Tattoo is 60 and our Pilrig Parlour is 30! Once more we have enjoyed being a Fringe Venue with all the benefits that brings, not least financial. However the sight of our buildings active and open over a significant period is wonderful and the Parlour custom was boosted by the American Youth Theatre youngsters! A big ‘thank you’ goes to all who made this possible - notably Stuart Sime, Mark Wexelstein and Martin Ritchie for the success of our Fringe Venue and Irene Wexelstein, Jean Ramage, Ronnie Cameron and Alex Allan and the soup makers for the Pilrig Parlour - all strongly supported by many willing helpers. A great deal more happened prior to all of this and I list a few to jog your memories. If you missed them, then you missed some wonderful experiences! The “Summer Magic” show by the Pantomime Group; the Leith Festival United Service featuring input from Leith Festival; the musical performance of “One Planet Future” presented by Vocal Vibes and supported by other children from Lorne Primary School; La La La Leith – an opportunity to sing songs from the shows and raise money for Waverley Care, featuring professional solo singers and supported by the Leith Forum Chorus and by lots of folk from the community. Yes things have been busy and we look forward now to more great activity that we can share in together as we seek to be God’s people in our community of Leith. Saturday 25 September marks the first time our beautiful Church buildings will be included in Edinburgh Open Doors Day. We look forward to many visitors coming in to see and to hear what we in Pilrig St Paul’s are all about. To make the most of this opportunity we need help of
many kinds. Speak to Martin Ritchie or myself - contact details on the back page of the magazine. We also look forward to celebrating Harvest Thanksgiving in Church on Sunday 10 October and with Lorne Primary in their Harvest Service in Church on Thursday 14th October. As always the more you put in, the more you can get out from your Church. Come and get more involved in this new session and feel that you truly belong. Together with God great things can and will happen and you can be part of it. God bless you and all whom you love.

PROPERTY REPORT Prior to the start of the Festival Fringe the decorators moved into the Church Hall to complete the refurbishment programme commenced last year with the electrical rewiring of the church buildings and the redecoration of all accommodation on ground floor level. The second part of the project involved the redecoration of the Church Hall, Stage Area, Stage ante-Room and BB Den which has greatly improved the overall appearance of the buildings. After the completion of this work blinds were fitted to the hall windows on the Pilrig Street elevation and the hall floor was re-varnished which has helped protect the floor covering from constant usage. These items now complete this aspect of our refurbishment programme and the Congregational Board are to be thanked for their efforts in pushing forward with these works. THANKS Mrs Valerie Bunch, sister of Elinor Wilson has written thanking the congregation of Pilrig St Paul’s Church for the beautiful flowers she received following the death of Elinor. She assures us all that the prayers and gifts given to Elinor, “during her long suffering illness were greatly appreciated by her”. Maurice and Elizabeth Millar send their appreciation of the lovely flowers they received recently. Margaret Simpson says “I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the congregation of Pilrig St Paul’s Church for the beautiful bouquet of flowers given to me in memory of my neighbour and friend Elinor (Wilson). Your prayers and thoughts are greatly appreciated at this very sad time.” My thanks to the Minister and all at Pilrig St Paul's for the lovely flowers delivered by Mrs Ella Gilfillan last Sunday. Isobel Pert Stuart Sime would like to thank everyone who sent cards and messages after his unexpected stay in the RIE during June and also for the lovely church flowers delivered by the Minister. It has taken some weeks to throw off the infection but glad to report that things are much improved and almost back to normal. A big THANK YOU to John and the congregation for the lovely flowers I received on the occasion of my 70th birthday. Antje Armstrong Mrs Ethel, Brown would like to thank all at Pilrig St Paul’s for the lovely flowers she received, they were much appreciated. Thank you very much for flowers received from Church on Sunday 1st August, brought to me by Jean Ramage. They are beautiful and very much appreciated. Thank you. Helen Greig A Huge Big “Thank you” to the minister and congregation for the flowers I received on my 80th birthday in July. Lovely shades of pale and deep violet Chrysanthemums, they were gorgeous and lasted about 4 weeks. So thank you again, Marjory McArthur
Marlyn Tait thanks everyone for their much appreciated support during the long weeks of her sister, Norma’s time in hospital. She greatly appreciated all the cards and expressions of sympathy and support she received following Norma’s passing. That’s Entertainment..... And it certainly was. What a fabulous night of full entertainment and fun. Thank you to everyone involved, already looking forward to the next Production. All the hard work was really worthwhile. Sadie and Michelle (Duffy)
VOCAL VIBES CHOIRS Vocal Vibes began again for the autumn term on Wednesday 25th August. New members are always welcome so please feel free to spread the word! Vocal Vibes 1 is for primary 3 and 4, meeting from 3.45-4.45pm in the main hall. Vocal Vibes 2 is for primary 5-7, meeting from 5-6pm in the main hall. This term we’ll be working towards Christmas events and also our own unique version of Oliver! Martin Ritchie
SUMMER MAGIC As advertised, the Pantomime Group presented their production of SUMMER MAGIC in the Church Hall on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th June. All the folks involved gave a tremendous performance and the show received great praise from many of the audiences. We had hoped to sell all seats for both performances but sadly this was not accomplished – we had a near capacity hall on the Friday night but the Saturday was disappointing ! After expenses (which were minimal) we raised the sum of £1,300 towards the deficit on the Congregational Account which we consider a very satisfactory result. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and supported the event and to all those who helped in any way in making the show possible w. Thanks Stuart W Sime Producer

DOORS OPEN DAY – SATURDAY
25TH SEPTEMBER 2010
Pilrig St Paul’s is included in the programme for 2010, organised by the Cockburn Association. We will be open 9am-5pm on the day, and this is a great chance to welcome visitors from all over Edinburgh and our local area. The idea is to show off our beautiful building and to take the chance to let people know about our church community and the activities that go on in the buildings. We need a team of helpers to make this happen! The Guild have offered to run a cafe on the day to raise money for church funds, but we need more of the following help: People willing to be stewards and show people round (speak to Martin Ritchie) People to make home baking and serve in the cafe (speak to Jeanette Sime or Irene Wexelstein) People to promote Doors Open Day in the local area (Speak to Martin Ritchie) There will be two shifts of 9am-1pm and 1pm-5pm, so you won’t be there all day! Let’s make this a great open day for Pilrig St Paul’s!
