Caulking the Boat "A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped." - Mark 4:37

Dear All, We are all familiar with this story from Mark’s gospel in which Jesus calms the storm. Over the centuries the drama of this story has inspired artists such as Rembrandt and Delacroix to depict Jesus’ mastery over the wind and the waves, while it’s message has provided comfort to many going through stormy times in their own lives. But as a colleague pointed out to me recently, this is also a story about a seaworthy boat. It wasn’t just a pure miracle that the boat wasn’t swamped – it was also that someone had done a good job in building and maintaining it. As human beings we are good at complaining. And we are often best at complaining about the small nitty-gritty administrative tasks that keep us from doing the big important things we would like to do. But this story reminds us that these small, sometimes mundane, even tedious, tasks such as caulking the boat, are just as important. As a community of faith we rely on many members who work quietly away behind the scenes doing the nitty-gritty administrative tasks that need to be done, but which are essential to the life of our congregation. 4

In The Oxford Book of Prayer, an Arab Christian named Mustafah wrote a prayer based on his work as a tailor: O God, I am Mustafah the tailor and I work in the shop of Muhammad Ali. The whole day long I sit and pull the needle and the thread through the cloth. O God, you are the needle and I am the thread. I am attached to you and I follow you. When the thread tries to slip away from the needle, it becomes tangled and must be cut so that it can be put back in the right place. O God, help me to follow you wherever you may lead me. For I am really only Mustafah the tailor and I work at the shop of Muhammad Ali on the great square. Like Mustafah the tailor, may we know God's presence in all the details of our work, and may we remember to give thanks for the work of all the Mustafahs of this world – all those who work behind the scenes caulking our boat. Shalom. Mark

PASTORAL CARE TEAM The autumn is already making its presence felt with darker mornings and a ‘wee nip in the air’ and so we are now turning our attention to the final quarter of this year for the Pastoral Care Team. Leith Community Cinema Update In September we held a screening of the classic Calendar Girls film and our audience enjoyed our home baked Cream Tea while enjoying the film. It was the first time we had used our new equipment. The screen is amazing and certainly warrants the description of a cinema screen. The other equipment is enhancing the quality of the picture and sound for our audience as well. It was a sell out event and the feedback from those attending was very positive. Audience feedback There were 14 feedback surveys completed with the following results. Marketing and communication about screenings – 71% agreed that it worked well however there were comments about the need to communicate more so that more people know about our cinema. Please help us with this by letting your family and friends know about our cinema. We do place articles in our magazine, inform the other Leith Churches, provide articles for Leith publications and place flyers in all key places in our local community however as we 8

all know the best way to get the word out is by word of mouth. We look forward to your support with this one. Experience in attending the screening – 100% of those completing our survey indicated that they thought the afternoon was very good/exceptional so we are pleased that, once people know about our screenings and come along, they have a good time!! Some of the quotes from Saturday. ‘the cakes and tea were fab, as was the decoration of the hall

‘liked the tables, had been to a previous screening when all in rows. -preferred the tables’ ‘loved the cream tea, the scones were excellent. Would have liked more scones and less cake! The sunflowers on the tables were a lovely touch’ ‘like the format you have - the refreshments matching the film theme. The small touches, napkins, paper tissues etc all lovely. Congratulations to all concerned.’ ‘a small interval would have been appreciated’ It is encouraging for us to receive such positive feedback and also valuable insight into how we can make things better for our audience. We are currently considering the potential for having an interval at our screenings in the future.

9

It has to be said that our screenings would not take place without the small army of volunteers who help in advance of the screening or turn out to set everything up. Our thanks go to the team for this screening. Emra Baker, Catriona Blackwood, Ian Dyson, Jim Fergie, Mark Foster, Scott Gillies, David Gill, Stephanie Gill, John Innes, Michelle Muhammed, Anne Murray, Susan Oliver, Cathie Purdie, Gordon Rouse, Jeanette Sime andLena. Our next screening is taking place on Monday 17th October at 1.30pm when we are showing the latest Ice Age film Ice Age 5 – Collision Course. Tickets can be booked via our website or completing the booking sheet in the Open Doorway. Doors open at 1pm. For

We have also had acceptance of our application for funding from the £eith Decides programme to support the payment for the film licenses for our 2017 programme. We would encourage those who live and/or work in Leith to help us by giving us your vote. 10

There will be displays of all the projects you can vote for on Saturday 8th October in the Leith Community Education Centre from 12.30pm-3pm. We look forward to your support for this valuable funding. The Knitting Bee Our Knitting Bee is always happy to welcome new people and so it has been good to have Flo Simpson and Joan Blackie join us. Thank you to everyone who has supported us with donations of wool and buttons, we have put them all to good use. Our next catch up is on Thursday 27th October at 2pm in the Open Doorway so please feel free to join us even if just for a cuppa. Training and Development I was both delighted and relieved to pass my Food Hygiene certificate in September and am now arranging for a training session for all those involved in food preparation and serving that will be a refresher for those who are already qualified and a good basis for anyone new to the guidance around food hygiene. If you would like to join this course please let me know. (Linda Gill) CrossReach Congregational Representative We give our thanks to Ella Gilfillan who has been our CrossReach Congregational representative for a number of years and is now stepping down. Christine Edington is going to 11

take on this role for us and so we wish Christine well with this new opportunity. CrossReach is the Social Care part of the Church of Scotland delivering more than 70 services employing 2000 people. We can do our part to support this work by purchasing from the Christmas Catalogue of cards and gifts. This year Care Share has been launched that allows you to purchase a gift that supports others for example for £5 you can fund a week’s supply of welcome tea and coffee for visitors to a CrossReach counselling centre like Wallace House. Copies of the catalogues are available now and orders can be placed with Christine or myself. Helping Hands Please remember to let us know if you would like a visit or phone call from us or would like to arrange this for a member of our congregation you feel would appreciate this type of support. All you need to do is complete a Helping Hands form and pop it into the box in the Open Doorway of the Church or speak/call any of our team.
