Dear All, “Easter is late this year” – at least that’s what I heard a lot of friends and colleagues saying during Lent. Certainly most of the daffodils in Pilrig Park had flowered and seeded by the time we celebrated Easter Sunday. But was it late? Easter is the original ‘moveable feast’ in the Christian calendar, falling on a different date each year. According to the formula set by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, Easter is always the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon following the Spring Equinox. However, these men were theologians and not astronomers and the tables they created can be up to 2 days early or late from the actual astrological full moon. The cycle of Easter dates repeats itself every 5,700,000 years for those of us that use the Gregorian calendar. (Although for those Orthodox and Coptic Christians who still follow the Julian calendar, the cycle of Easter dates repeats every 532 years). During this cycle the earliest Easter can possibly fall is 22 March, although this is very rare, occurring most recently in 1818 and next in 2285. The latest date Easter can occur is 25 April, which last occurred in 1943 and will next occur in 2038. Statistically speaking the most common date for Easter is 19 April (occurring 3.9% of the time) although 16 April, as it was this year, is not far behind as the second most frequent date. Whether early or late does the date of Easter really matter? Probably not. What certainly matters is the good news we celebrate every Sunday: That suffering, death, and evil in any form don’t have the last word; that Christ is alive, risen from the dead; 5

and that in him we have the promise of eternal life, whenever we choose to celebrate it. As far as the shops are concerned Easter is over for another year. The displays of chocolate eggs and Easter cards have been replaced by disposable barbeques and holiday travel items. The Church, however, will continue to celebrate the season of Easter until 4 June (Pentecost). The changing date of Easter may be inconvenient to many in our secular world, but this ‘moveable feast’ serves to remind us that the message of Easter isn’t just limited to one day, or even to a liturgical season, but to the whole of our lives. Shalom Mark Postcard Search 2017 - The theme of this year's search is "The Psalms". Send in a card that you feel shows a verse or verses from one of the psalms. Please write which psalm and verse(s) it is on the back of the card so that the Minister doesn't have to guess. All entries should be sent to the Church Office (1B Pilrig Street Edinburgh EH6 5AH) by Sunday 24 September.

The magazine Thank you for all the contributions received this month. Please may I have articles for June by May 21st? There will be no magazine in July and August. Thank you, Catriona Blackwood

If you would like to join the team please let us know. Welcome Pack The welcome pack is ready and can be provided to anyone looking to know more about how things work and who is who in our church. If you would like one or know someone who would benefit from a copy please complete one of our Helping Hands cards or provide details to any of the Pastoral Care Team. Thanks go to Catriona Blackwood for leading on this and all the hard work she has done in pulling it all together. The Great Big Get Together Would you be prepared to approach a friend or neighbour who lives alone to invite them to come with you to our Great Big Get Together lunch on Sunday 18th June after the service? We are arranging a community meal as part of the Big Lunch collaboration with the Joe Cox Foundation. In previous years the lunch has really been an event for our congregation with a few visitors from the local community. This year I would appeal to everyone to think about how you might bring someone along who would other wise be spending the afternoon on their own. There is so much evidence that social engagement and interaction has very positive health benefits and 9

so please do your bit to support someone you know to get out and have lunch with us. As we sit down to lunch together there will be people all across the UK doing exactly the same so we will be taking part in an event that will be reaching out to people to ensure that they are not alone that afternoon. If you would like to help in the planning or running of the lunch please let me know. Leith Community Cinema Update In April we held three screenings although one was on the last day of March when we showed our Easter Holiday screening of the children’s animated film Trolls. We had 25 people attending and a team of 7 people on the day. We also had 6 people set up the cinema the night before. The children certainly enjoyed using the chill out area at the front of the hall and took advantage of the beanbags, scatter cushions and junior tables/chairs. The crafting, library and colouring-in tables were also popular before and during the screening. Our café was open and offered fresh coffee and tea with a cake. As usual the children’s drinks and snacks were free of charge. There were 8 feedback surveys completed. How did people find out about the screening? Word of mouth - family/friends – 5 E-mail & Facebook from Leith Community Cinema - 2 Via other organisations Inspiring Leith - 1 Have you visited us before? Yes - 3 No - 5 10

Overall event rating summary Exceptional – 5 Very good – 3 Comments Really welcoming and friendly and accommodating for babies and younger ones – thank you! Really relaxed atmosphere and great facilities with super helpful volunteers Really like the ‘easy feel’ atmosphere you have created here. Thanks. Brilliant space Thoroughly enjoyed the space, more please! How about some family orientated films appealing to a broader age range? This is the first one I have been to. It was well organised and enjoyable for my young children and I. You could consider partnering with local charities like ‘contact the elderly’ or ‘vintage vibes’ to do screenings for elderly Leithers? The children voted to let us know what they thought about the following: The film earned 12 green smiley faces The snacks earned 11 green smiley faces The crafts, library and colouring tables earned 6 green smiley faces Some of the children did not have time to visit the crafting table due to the time they arrived at the screening so the votes are lower for this reason. 11

We also screened two events in collaboration with Pop Up Scotland reviewing last years programme, and screening one day of their 2017 programme. Both events went well and we were delighted to welcome new audience members as the programme attracted a different audience for us. There was great feedback from both events as well and so we are hoping that this might be an on-going relationship with Pop Up Scotland. Laurel and Hardy Our attention is now turning to the two screenings for the month of May. We are showing three short films that are the best of the many Laurel and Hardy films made in the 1930s. We are also delighted to be welcoming representatives from the Living Memories team who will be bringing along some of the items they had gathered from days gone by to share with us. The films are rated U. Our Community Café will be serving tea, coffee and cakes from 10.30am when the doors open and there will be ice cream on sale at the interval. The screening commences at 11am. The screening is open to everyone and is fully accessible as we are holding the screening in our downstairs hall. It is also a dementia friendly event where we look forward to welcoming those with dementia along with their family, friends, carers and support workers. Suggested donation on day: £3 Adult / Child £2 Mary Poppins We are also showing Mary Poppins on Saturday 20 th May at 2pm. The film is a U certificate. Our Community Café will be serving tea, coffee and cakes from 1.30pm when the doors open and there will be ice cream on sale at the interval. Suggested donation on day: £3 Adult / Child £2 12
