Dear All, At the opening of this year’s General Assembly of The Church of Scotland her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, was invited to address The Assembly in her role as Lord High Commissioner. She spoke about the forthcoming 500th anniversary of The Protestant Reformation in Europe and of the impact that this had on the people and nation of Scotland. At the heart of the Reformation in Scotland was the firm belief that there should be a school in every parish. The Reformers strove and succeeded in bringing education to every man, woman and child regardless of their social class – breaking the traditional mould of education being only available for the rich. It is not surprising that history shows us that this period was followed by a great flowering in Scottish culture and intellect – known as the Scottish Enlightenment. This was a time when Scotland provided the world with the likes of the economist, Adam Smith; the philosopher, David Hume; the architect, Robert Adam; the artist, Henry Raeburn; the poet, Robert Burns; and many others whose work still stands as an inspiration and an influence to millions of people in the world today. Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, reminded The Assembly that the Church of Scotland is still making a significant contribution to the lives of many people in Scotland today through the work of CrossReach (The Church’s Social Care Council) and through the welcome that the Church offers at a time when there is a great need for welcoming and offering hospitality. 4

The Church of Scotland has a long and rich history and we should never forget the important role we have played in shaping our country. Despite declining numbers the Church of Scotland is still a significant force for change in people’s lives and we must never forget that we are part of God’s continuing work to transform people’s lives for the better. May we continue to enlighten hearts and inspire minds. May we continue to offer welcome and hospitality. May we continue to serve the people of Scotland in Christ’s name. Shalom. Mark The Magazine Thank you for all the contributions received this month, and for meeting the deadline. There will be no magazine in July and August. Please may I have articles for September by August 20th? Thanks to everyone who has helped with the magazine this year: The Minister, Clerks, Treasurer, and conveners of groups for their articles, John Innes who prints it, Roy Eprile who compiles the Prayer Corner, Margaret Cameron and her team who make it up into magazine form, and my husband, Bill Blackwood, who proofreads it. We now have a break until the end of August. I would like articles for the September magazine by August 20th, please. Thank you, Catriona Blackwood

THANK YOU

Joy and Murdo MacLeod thank you for all the calls and enquiries, telephone calls, cards, good wishes and offers of help received during Joy's illness and stay in hospital recently, and we are grateful that we were in your thoughts when we needed you. We thank the Minister for his visits to both our home and hospital, which were particularly supportive. May all of God's blessings be with you all. Many thanks for the lovely flowers I received recently. They were much appreciated. Jean Ramage Thank you to everyone, and particularly Maria Croall and Aileen Fraser, who caretake on Friday and Saturday nights when required for bookings. This really helps with our hall use and lets income. Foodbank Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers. Once again, nothing is too much trouble as they give up their time to help others. Roy Eprile (And also to Roy who does behind the scenes work. Ed) Count your Blessings – Lent Appeal We had a superb response from all those who decided to join in our Lent Appeal for 2017. You donated the sum of £639.80 (£455 of which was given by Gift Aid, which when claimed will add a further £113.75). This gives us a total of £ 753.55 in support of the work of the church. Thank you to all those who took part.

Eric Fisher Halls and Heating Thank you to Maria Croall who makes sure that the Sanctuary and Halls are ready for all who use them and to Ian Bethune and Roy Eprile who stay back every Sunday to set the timer for the heating. Catriona Blackwood The Magazine Thanks to all the team who put the magazine together and distribute it. Without their assistance on the last Thursday of the month the magazine could not happen. Enjoy a summer break - see you again on 24th August. Margaret Cameron Thank you to our Editor Catriona Blackwood for once again an excellent magazine and her helpers who do the distribution. Roy Eprile Safeguarding Thank you to all those on our safeguarding register who visit our less able members and look after the children in the creche. You are always conscientious about making sure that there is the right number of registered people in the halls with the children. Some of our members also assist with forum activities in the school holidays. Catriona Blackwood Congratulations to Aileen and Callum Fraser and to Joyce Loughlin on the recent births of two new grandchildren/great grandchildren, Rory William Fraser and Nieve Olivia Fraser. 8

Pastoral Care Team June 2017 Welcome Pack The welcome pack is ready and can be provided to anyone looking to know more about how things work and who is who in our church. If you would like one or know someone who would benefit from a copy please complete one of our Helping Hands cards, one of the slips in the open doorway, or provide details to any of the Pastoral Care Team. Thanks go to Catriona Blackwood for leading on this and all the hard work she has done in pulling it all together. The Great Get Together Would you be prepared to approach a friend or neighbour who lives alone to invite them to come with you to our Great Big Get Together lunch on Sunday 18th June after the service? We are arranging a community meal as part of the Big Lunch collaboration with the Joe Cox Foundation. In previous years, the lunch has really been an event for our congregation with a few visitors from the local community. This year I would appeal to everyone to think about how you might bring someone along who would otherwise be spending the afternoon on their own. There is so much evidence that social engagement and interaction has very positive health benefits and so please do your bit to support someone you know to get out and have lunch with us. As we sit down to lunch together there will be people all across the UK doing exactly the same so we will be taking part in an event that will be reaching out to people to ensure that they are not alone that afternoon. If you would like to help in the planning or running of the lunch please let me know. Leith Community Cinema Update 9

In May we held two screenings that both proved to be a success. Our Laurel & Hardy screening, our first dementia friendly and fully accessible event, sold out and Mary Poppins was attended by people of all ages. Plans are now under way for our next screening on Friday 16th June when we are collaborating on a screening of independent films along with a Q&A discussion on the Gentrification of Leith. Tickets go on sale on Monday 22nd May. Helping Hands Please remember to let us know if you would like a visit or phone call from us or would like to arrange this for a member of our congregation you feel would appreciate this type of support. All you need to do is complete a Helping Hands form and pop it into the box in the Open Doorway of the Church or speak/call any of our team.
