“What life is this if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty’s glance And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stop and stare. - Wiliam Henry Davies (1871 – 1940) Dear All, On our day off, Joanne and I like nothing better than heading out to the countryside to walk the dog. Following a woodland path, skirting the side of a loch, or walking through a glen provides an opportunity to slow down from the pace and urgency of modern day living. It almost allows us to venture back to our childhood years when days were not measured in hours but by mealtimes and daylight. William Henry Davies, the writer of the above poem, reminds us that the hectic pace of modern life can have a detrimental effect on the human spirit – unless we take time out to ‘stop and stare’. This is particularly pertinent as we move forward into autumn. The pace of church life increases ten-fold with church groups and committees re-convening for what will undoubtedly be a very busy period in the run up to Christmas. Indeed, it seems that without really thinking about it, our future lives can seem to be so 5

well planned-out that there appears to be little space for time to ‘stop and stare’. Every Sunday our faith invites us to take a break from the treadmill of life, as we gather together as a community of God’s people. Worship invites us to step into the timelessness of God’s space, that we might pause and reflect on our lives; renew our relationship with God; and refresh and equip our souls for the week ahead. According to a recent study by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, those who go to church are less stressed and more likely to live longer than non-churchgoers. The study showed that this was especially true for men and women between the ages of 40 and 65, who could reduce their risk of mortality by 55% by attending a place of worship on a regular basis. Whenever we feel under pressure to fit everything in to our busy schedules, we need to remember that time spent with God is always time well spent. We may not always have free time to spend in the lap of nature, but we should always make time to spend in the lap of God. Shalom, Mark

Sunday October 29th 11:00am HOLY COMMUNION This is the Lord’s Table. ANYONE who loves God and responds to Christ’s invitation to join together in this feast is welcome to join us in the celebration.

PASTORAL CARE TEAM The Pastoral Care Team are due to hold a meeting to review activity over this year and make plans for 2018 activity. If you would like to join this meeting or be part of the team please let any of our team know and we will include you in the planning and any meetings held. We are always happy to send cards, make visits and phone calls to members or arrange for delivery of the flowers from our Sunday service. Please let us know if you are aware of someone who would appreciate and benefit from any of these contacts from us. Knitting Bee We very much enjoyed our afternoon out at the Crafting Exhibition in Causewayside where we were treated to a demonstration of origami box making, a look around the shop and finished up with a cup of tea at the cafĂŠ next door. This was our first trip using our new contract with Lothian Community Transport Services. We were collected outside the church and dropped back there so it worked well and meant everyone was able to attend due to the ease of transport. This month we are welcoming Louisa Leggett who is a Parenting Coordinator from an organisation called Stepping Stones. They help and support vulnerable new mothers and we will be hearing about the work they do and how our donations will be used. We are also looking forward to welcoming three new members to the Knitting Bee from the local community. Our final project this year is our Twiddlemuffs and we have a number of these ready with more being knitted every week. These will be offered to members of our congregation and to local care homes after being blessed at one of services in the autumn.

Leith Community Cinema Update Our first ÂŁeith Decides screenings took place in September with the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast and the film depicting the true story set in NASA called Hidden Figures. Work continues with our application for Charitable Status from OSCR as we reach the fine tuning stage of our application and provide updates and amends as requested by OSCR. All being well we are still hopeful that we will be granted approval by the Autumn. Booking is now open for our Community Cinema Conference on the 14th October from 10.30-12.30pm. Please join us and help us to review the year, discuss potential new ideas and plan for the 2018 programme. Our November screenings are also available for booking now. We are showing Sing on Friday 3rd November at 2pm and Viceroys House on the 4th November at 2pm. These are also Community Screenings and will be popular so you may want to book your place soon. We also took part in a research project being run by the University of Edinburgh on Health Poverty. At our last get together the Knitting Bee worked in two groups to prepare a community map of what is available to us in Leith. This work will be included in the overall research that is aiming to understand how we access and use health and social services and importantly why some people do not access services that are available for them. Helping Hands Please remember to let us know if you would like a visit or phone call from us or would like to arrange this for a member of our congregation you feel would appreciate this type of support. All you need to do is complete a Helping Hands form and pop it into the box in the Open Doorway of the Church or speak/call any of our team.
