From the manse "So Jesus called the disciples and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." - Mark 10:42-45 The disciples had expected great things from Jesus when he ushered in God's glorious new reign on earth. But their lofty expectations were dashed when he ended up being publicly crucified by the Roman authorities. It was only after the resurrection that they began to understand what he had been trying to tell them and teach them all along. They remembered the things he said, such as "those who want to save their life will lose it, but those who lose their life for my sake will save it." And they remembered the things he did: how he washed their feet; how he healed the sick; how he shared food with social outcast; how he embraced the marginalised; how he fed the hungry. Above all he taught them a completely new understanding of authority, and a new kind of power, the authority of a servant and a power made perfect by focussing on the lives of others. Jesus’ disciples were not to lead as the Gentile Roman rulers did by being tyrants and bullies who lorded their power over their subjects. Nor were they to lead as the Jewish leaders, who put their religious rules and rituals before any concerns for others. No, they were to exercise their authority through servant leadership, with an authority that was humble and aimed to serve others. Jesus was teaching them, and the generations that would follow, how to be the Church.

The same is true for us today – we must strive to create a community of faith where all are given a voice, where all are invited to participate, and where all are encouraged to show servant leadership – and not just those in office. We need Elders and Board members in order to function within the realms of the Church and to meet our obligations as a charitable organisation – but we also need everyone else to be involved in the shared role of servant leadership too. In the words of Hymn 694 “Brother, sister, let me serve you,” written by Richard A M Gillard, we need to find ways of being Christ to one another; of travelling as companions on the road of faith; of supporting one another through times of joy and times of sorrow, and of sharing the burdens we carry. We must look beyond the traditional language and roles of members and officebearers to create instead a community of disciples who worship, witness, and work together in the name and example of Christ. “Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.” Shalom Mark Two wooden, external, doors have recently been replaced at the manse with new PVC ones. The new doors provide extra security, weather proofing, and warmth to the property. The work was done by Mark Smith glazing. Mark and Joanne (and Rannoch) greatly appreciate this work and the difference it will make to heating and maintaining the manse. Thank you.
