From the manse … Dear All, He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. – Isaiah 2:4 On 11th November 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front in what had been up till then the bloodiest war in the history of humanity. The armistice agreement, which was signed at 5 am, came into effect six hours later at 11 am giving us the oft-quoted 'eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month' for the end of hostilities. Four years of conflict had resulted in an estimated 40 million casualties and approximately 20 million military and civilian deaths on all sides. A conservative estimate of 3 million has been suggested as the British toll of dead and wounded. It is true to say that scarcely a family in the land was unaffected. In the face of such numbers it was called ‘The War to end all Wars’ and around the world countries quickly agreed to set aside a day to remember – lest we never forget the horrors and human cost of war. Sadly, since then our world has seen well over 100 other major conflicts and scarcely a year has gone past without there being bloodshed and loss of lives between different countries or factions. Looking at our world today it sometimes seems as if we have forgotten the lessons of the past as we continue to repeat the pattern of killing and violence as a means to settle our disputes. As we pause on this significant anniversary to remember all those who died in war and the sacrifice they made, we need to honour their sacrifice and the peace for which they fought. We do so by reminding our world that bloodshed and violence should never be the way to resolve our differences. 5

Each Sunday we see the numerous war memorials in our church. But do we really look at them? For written, carved and etched on these memorials are the names of ordinary people, some of whom sat in the same pews as we sit. In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds men and women fought for what they believed in and didn’t count the cost. If we believe in God’s values of love, peace and justice for all people, then we too must be prepared to do whatever we can to make our world a better place for all to live together in peace. Shalom Mark THE MAGAZINE Thank you for all the items I have received this time. Please see the information on the inside front cover re articles for publication in the magazine. Scottish Churches Disabilities Group As many of you are aware Pilrig St Paul’s hosted the AGM of the Scottish Churches Disabilities Group on the 22nd September 2018. I have been instructed by the President, Chairman, committee members and attendees to thank the "guid people" of Pilrig St Pauls for their warm welcome and the hospitality they received during and throughout the course of their meeting - very, very warmly appreciated. Not the only remarks, especially as some members travel from all the "airts and places" across Scotland, but the building, location, facilities for disabled people, willingness to host events and a "beautiful church" - all were commented upon. From a personal point of view can I thank Linda Gill and her team who sorted out the tea, coffees etc and Mark Wexelstein who provided the support for me to "master" (and I use the word very guardedly) the audio and visual technicalities that were much appreciated, and again commented on, on the day. Finally - can I also take the "opporchancity" to thank the Minister and Session for allowing Pilrig St Paul’s to host our meeting. Scott Gillies Secretary Leith Community Cinema The report of last weekend, 20th and 21st October, which was extra busy with the planning meeting, AGM and screening of La La Land, will appear next month. Thank to all who worked so hard for this. Editor
