Cover picture by Lindesfarne Images
We welcome articles and thank you letters from members and friends. These are published in both the printed magazine and on-line, unless otherwise arranged with the editor, (eg where personal information is concerned, including the names in the prayer corner, it would normally be omitted from the on-line version). All contributors must provide their name, please, which is normally attached to the article. We reserve the right to edit articles. Changes other than spelling or grammar will, where possible, be discussed with the contributor. Some copies of the printed magazine are available to the public in the open doorway. The views expressed are those of individual contributors and not necessarily those of Pilrig St. Paul’s Church or the Church of Scotland. 2

From the Manse “ … when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” – Matthew 6: 6 - 8 Dear All, Nearly everyone you will ever meet will have prayed at some point in their lives: whether for a sick loved one, a friend in a difficult situation, or maybe for themselves when they simply had nowhere left to turn. Prayer is the vehicle that allows our souls to travel into the realm of God so that we can share our concerns and worries with God and hopefully find the answers we seek. Prayer has the power to inspire us and encourage us in our lives of faith, and prayer can also bring healing to our broken souls and wounded spirits. One of the things we are called to do as individuals and as a Community of Faith is to hold others in our prayers. During Lent we are inviting you to stop for a moment every Wednesday at one pm to pray for all those of the congregation whose names or faces you can remember. Your prayers do not need to be long, or poetic, or even use words at all – they just need to help you connect with God’s presence in your life. And just as you stop to pray for others – remember that 5
others in the congregation will be stopping and praying for you. If you are unable to do “Wednesdays at One” then feel free to pick your own day and time e.g. “Tuesdays at Two”, “Fridays at Four” or “Mondays at Midday”. Whatever best fits your own weekly routine. As we journey towards Easter I hope that you will all experience something of God’s presence in your lives. Shalom Mark The Magazine Thank you for the contributions this month. May I have articles for April by 22nd March please? Apart from thank you cards and notes it is helpful if these can be emailed, please. (magazine@pilrigstpauls.org.uk) Catriona Blackwood

Leith Community Knitting Bee
As mentioned in last month’s update over the course of the last two years we have lost a number of our members and so we find ourselves in 2020 with very low numbers in our group. We undertook a publicity campaign on social media and through posters kindly produced for us by Catriona Blackwood during January to try to source new members. Whilst we are keen to keep the work of the Knitting Bee going we would need more people to take part to ensure it is viable to keep going. We are now very close to taking the decision to close down the group. Linda Gill
PASTORAL CARE Thank you to the magazine visitors, members and friends who keep us up to date so that we can send flowers, a card or visit members who are unable to come to Church, are recovering from illness or housebound. Some members prefer a text, or email. If that applies to you, please let us know. Please also tell us about celebrations, unless the person wants to keep it quiet! Over 18 months, from 28th March, the buses will be partially diverted from Leith Walk. The Pastoral Group will be working on 7
ways to keep in touch with those who find it difficult to get to Services, events and the open doorway during this time. Please let one of us know if you are affected, so we can be sure to maintain contact. Leith Community Cinema Update
During January work took place to tidy our equipment and find new places store it to make it easier for those who set up the cinema for our screenings. Thanks to Mark Wexelstein and his work colleague who undertook this for us using community days 8
from their employer. Our electrical equipment was also tested for use during 2020. We also attended the RBS Graduate Council community conference and are pleased to have secured support from a number of graduates using their community days to support our screenings this year. Our first screenings of 2020 are due to take place on Friday 28 th February when we are hosting a closed screening for a group of parents from Lorne Primary school and an open screening of Dora, The Lost City of Gold. Watch out for details of further screenings in next month’s magazine. If you would like to be involved and help out in any way with the cinema please let us know. Linda Gill Leader, Leith Community Cinema
