“ The Church is not a building, the Church is not a steeple. The Church is not a resting-place, the Church is a people” - Richard K Avery & Donald S Marsh Dear All, Over the summer months members and friends of Pilrig St. Paul’s have been sending us postcards of their travels. Each card depicts an image of a church building – from the whitewashed orthodox chapels of the Eastern Mediterranean to the gothic inspired cathedrals of Europe. Some of them are centuries old with spires, pews, and stained glass; while others are more recent in age, with modern designs and layouts. But whatever their age, design, and features all of them play an important role in the life and worship of the local communities they serve. As the words from a well-known children’s hymn (above) remind us, the Church is about more than the architecture of our buildings – it is about the lives of the people within them. That is why we have also been asking friends and members of the congregation to come up with some new ‘rules for living’ that will help to remind and inspire us of our ministry and mission as the people of God in Pilrig St. Paul’s Parish Church. We will use both the cards and the new ‘rules for living’ as part of our harvest celebrations on Sunday 4 October, when we will celebrate the gifts of all God’s people within the Church. So it is still not too late to send us a postcard of a church from your travels or some words to help inspire and re-energise our role as the local community of faith. At the same time a small group from the Kirk Session has been invited to hear more about a new pilot scheme in the Church of Scotland entitled “Path of Renewal”. It will select 20 congregations from across Scotland to look at new forms of ministry and new ways of being the Church. The process has not 2

yet begun and over 40 congregations are being considered for the scheme. If Pilrig St. Paul’s is chosen as one of the pilot congregations we will keep you informed of what’s involved and how you can get involved. Whatever the future holds, we know that it is not just in God’s hands but ours too. We can only plan and build for the future using the skills and resources of the present – which means that we are all entrusted with the task of building a bigger, brighter, and better future for the Church in Pilrig St. Paul’s and beyond. We do so as part of a community of faith that seeks to support and encourage one another in all that we do. And in the knowledge that by working together we can often achieve far more than we ever imagined or dreamed. Or in the words of the chorus from the above hymn: “I am the Church! You are the Church! We are the Church together! All who follow Jesus, all around the world, yes, we’re the Church together.” May God bless our building, its people, and our shared ministry as we continue to work together for the future of our Church. Shalom Mark THE MAGAZINE Thank you for all the updates and thank you letters for the magazine. Please may I have articles for October by September 20th? Thank you Catriona Blackwood 3

PASTORAL CARE NEWS The Big Lunch On Sunday 7th June we held our Big Lunch and we were delighted with a full house, even having to set up some extra tables to cater for the overspill!! Everyone had a good time with David Fraser entertaining us from the piano with some of the old tunes and lots of chatter. Thank you to the team who helped set up, prepare the food and serve – Fiona Rankin, Moira Fergie, Louise Illingworth, Mark Wexelstien, Ella Gilfillan, David Gill and Stephanie Gill. Thank you also for all your donations of food on the day. Dance Class Dance Ihayami is Scotland’s Indian dance company, dedicated to the contemporisation of Indian dance. The company challenges ideas about Indian classical dance and creates innovative contemporary work, regularly collaborating with different art forms and media. There is still time to register your interest in a place at our monthly Indian Dance class with Dance Ihaymii. The class will continue the teaching of story telling through music and hand gestures as was demonstrated at the Young at Heart event in March. The classes will be supported by funding from the Big Lottery and so the cost has been reduced to a small donation which is great news for us. We also plan to follow the class each month with a lunch. Places are limited so please make sure you let Linda or any of the Pastoral Care team know if you would like to join. The plan is for the classes to start in September.

Community Film Club We enjoyed another screening at our Community Film Club in early July and the attendance was great with twenty more people coming along than the last time. This time we had set up the event on Social Media and also opened an Eventbrite appointment so people could register to come along on-line. There was also a phone number on the posters and flyers to people could reserve tickets that way. We showed Night at the Museum, the Secret Tomb and the good news is that everyone who came along enjoyed it. We also tested offering a Community CafĂŠ between the two film showings and plan to do that again as we had positive feedback from those who ate there. We were also able to make a donation to the church funds of ÂŁ75 from the proceeds. We are currently working on the next screening that will be in October during the school holidays. We have also set up a website for Leith Community Cinema which we plan to launch for this next showing. More details will be announced soon. Helping Hands Please remember to let us know if you would like a visit or phone call from us or would like to arrange this for a member of our congregation you feel would appreciate this type of support. Our team are trained and able to support in a number of ways with pastoral care. All you need to do is complete a Helping Hands form and pop it into the box in the Open Doorway of the Church or speak to or call any of our team. We are looking for one new member for our team. If you would like to join us please let me know. 7
