No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends .
Dear All, There is an old story that says in the weeks after the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Jewish authorities met to discuss what they should do about his followers and their teachings. They were in a quandary as to what to do – should they imprison the Apostles or even execute them? Then the oldest and wisest of the Jewish teachers stood up to speak. “Brothers,” he said. “We need do nothing. For if what they teach is not from God, it will surely die and blow away like a desert wind. But, if it is from God, if it has the power of God’s Spirit, then no force on earth will stop it.” Over 2,000 years on, and despite times of hardship and persecution, we continue to celebrate God’s ultimate act of Love – that not even death could stop. This is the message that we seek to share with one another and the communities we serve, as we seek new ways to build and grow both the Church and the lives of all those we serve at Pilrig St. Paul’s. Love is an immoveable force. It is a powerful persuader. Indefatigable and resolute it will squeeze between apathy and weakness, hate and indifference. Love will conquer where all else fails, because Love is of God. Love has the power to transform our lives and the life of our world, just as it transformed the death of Jesus into the power and presence of the Risen Christ. I am not suggesting that this could happen, or that it may happen; I 2
am informing you that it is happening. Love is the driving force of all that we are and all that we do as a community of faith at Pilrig St. Paul’s – and it is this same Love that we must continue to let flow and flourish in our lives throughout this season of Easter and beyond. Please continue to show your generous support and dedication towards the work of the Open Doorway, the Food Bank, the Lunch Club, The Guild, the Sunday School, the Pastoral Care Team, the worship, and the many other examples of God’s Love in action at Pilrig St. Paul’s. As we continue to celebrate the power of Love at work in our community, we will look at new projects and new ways of working together, in the effort to spread the good news that all those who live in Love, live in God, and God lives in them. We do so in the knowledge that no force on earth can stop us if we continue to work in the power of God’s Spirit and following Christ’s example of Love! Mark THE MAGAZINE Thank you for all the contributions to the magazine this month. Please accept my apologies for the omission of anything sent after 18th April. This is due to a problem with e-mails on our computer. Anything received once we are up and running again will be included in the next magazine, including the Stated Annual Meeting minutes which have already been prepared by Aileen Fraser and proof-read by Mark Foster and Mark Wexelstein. Please may I have contributions for the next magazine by Sunday 25th May? This will be the last magazine before our summer break and is to be published a week later than usual, due to the Church being used for the elections and so not available for use by the magazine team. The joint Festival service will be held on SUNDAY 15th June at 11 am in South Leith Church. There will be no Service in Pilrig St Paul’s that day.

THANK YOU Thank you for the lovely flowers given to me after the service today. A kind gesture – much appreciated. John Brown Just to say thank you for the lovely flowers Jeanette and Lisa delivered on Sunday, with all the good wishes from the Church. Nan Ross Fiona Rankin has been asked to pass on the thanks of her neighbours for the lovely bunches of daffodils they received recently from the Church. They certainly brought a smile to their faces on such a dull day and were a wonderful surprise. Thank you very much for the lovely flowers. Simpson

Pastoral Care - Helping Hands Smart Shopping Workshop Plans are progressing well for our workshop on the 9th May at 2pm in our Church. Please make sure that you register for the event and join us for an hour of exploring the best ways to get more for your money from your weekly shopping trip. The workshop will help to clear the mystery of the sometimes confusing pricing and labelling approach used by supermarkets and shops. We aim to help attendees be clear on the items with the best value and how to optimize the deals offered by most supermarkets as well as looking at the power of group buying and on-line shopping. 5
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions so please bring along any till receipts, photos of price labels or packets on the day. We look forward to helping you enjoy making the most of your shopping budget. Thanksgiving and Remembrance Service The service being held on Sunday 11 th May is open to everyone who feels that they might benefit from some time to reflect and remember. There is no formal aspect to this service, it is very much for you to use as a means to renewing your strength and potentially finding others in the same place as you with readings and music during the service. Please come along and feel free to invite anyone you feel would benefit from the service. We look forward to welcoming you to the service. The Pastoral Care Team At our most recent meeting it was agreed to bring you more information and views from others in the Pastoral Care Team. Catriona Blackwood is our first team member to tell you about her interests with Pastoral Care and give her view on the work we are doing as a team. I am delighted to be a member of the pastoral care team, helping to add an extra angle to the work already done by the minister, the Elders, and the magazine and flower visitors. I hope to be there for individual fellow members at times of significance to them. As a nurse in long term care I was able to share the joy of achievement and the ups and downs of illness with residents, staff and families. I hope that I can use this experience to support fellow members who need a listening ear, whether to share a joy or a sadness. 6
I think that workshops such as the one about smart shopping will be a good addition to what we do and add to the variety of things on offer at Pilrig St Paul’s. Hopefully we can extend the support to those of our members who are less able to get to Church and ensure that they still feel part of the Church family.
