“They shall not grow old as we grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” ~ Extract from “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon

Dear All, These words of Robert Laurence Binyon will echo through great cathedrals and small country churches alike on Remembrance Sunday. They are evocative words and they remind us that there are some things that endure beyond old age - even death values, virtues, and human qualities that live on in the collective memory of generation after generation. On Remembrance Sunday we gather as a community bound by the love of God to remember the human cost of armed conflict and consider our response to it. Many people of my generation and younger grew up not knowing first-hand the cost and carnage of war. It hadn’t directly touched our own lives, but more recent campaigns fought in Iraq and Afghanistan brought into focus for us the realities of the human cost of conflict. Most people had relatives, friends, neighbours, or friends of friends, who were serving in either Iraq or Afghanistan. And a global media presence meant that we also saw the plight and displacement of non-combatants caught in the chaos. Generations of those who were born post WWII saw the physical, emotional, and mental scars that armed conflict inflicts on individuals, families, and communities. At such times it can be hard for us to reconcile these experience of warfare with what we know and understand of God in our encounters with Jesus Christ. Yet try we must, for this is the nature of Remembrance. Remembrance Sunday is a time for reflecting on the human cost of pursuing justice through the 2

discomfort of warfare; on the personal sacrifice of so many people, young and not so young, in facing and meeting that cost; and on how we respond to such events. As Christians we remember and celebrate the sacrifice that purchased peace and mercy for the whole world – shown to us not only in the death of Jesus on the cross but also in the cost of love and openness to the stranger that marked his entire ministry. As we pause, once again, to reflect on the cost of human conflict we can do no better than seeking to follow Christ’s example of love, care and justice in our own lives and communities. Shalom Mark.

PASTORAL CARE TEAM We recently held a meeting of the team to review our progress and look at priorities for next year. In 2016 we aim to have a new plan of pastoral care and contact in place. We are also looking forward to building the views of those involved in the wider pastoral care for our congregation on the 1 st November into our plan when we are meeting up over lunch. Leith Community Cinema Our screening of Inside Out on the 12 th October was a sell out event with 100 people watching the film and a number of them also came along to our Community Café. It was a lively afternoon and it created a real buzz in the building. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it happen either in the Community Café or the set up and running of the cinema. We are now looking forward to our November events that are being held in different venues. Saturday 7th November – Doors open 6.30pm, screening commences at 7pm - From Scotland with Love in the Destiny Church, Casselbank Street, Leith Saturday 7th November 2.30pm – 4pm – Memories Alive, Family Memories Event, Ocean Terminal, ground floor opposite Debenhams. In December we are screening Elf, a film for all ages that will make you laugh and certainly cheer you up. The film is being shown at 4pm on Thursday 10 th December to accommodate children coming after school. We will have a festive theme to this screening with fruit punch and mince pies so this is likely to be a popular screening. To ensure you can be there please you book your tickets as soon as possible. 10

On Wednesday 16th December we are screening White Christmas at 2pm. We will be offering a hot drinks and cake café with doors opening at 1.30pm. Tickets can be booked now so please make sure you secure yours soon. To book you can do this by putting your name on the list in the Open Doorway, on-line or by phone. Please visit our new website on www.leithcommunity cinema.com, call us on 0131 510 6662 or send an e-mail on info@leithcommunitycinema.com. If you would like to help or be involved in any way with the Community Cinema and Café please let me know, as we are keen to create a team to work with us on the on-going development of the cinema. The Big Lunch Extras - Project Eden I had a great weekend with the Big Lunch Extras Scotland clan in September and was pleased to meet up with some from the May camp I attended and make new contacts across Scotland. The format of this event was to provide encouragement and support for the projects under way and to share best practice across the community. It was well run and well worth attending. As well as having a great time I was delighted to find out that we are to receive £500 of funding from the Scottish Government that has been secured by The Big Lunch Extras’ team for each community project they are supporting in Scotland. Our projects are the Community Café & Leith Community Cinema and so the plan is to use this funding to buy equipment for our café and cinema.
