PILRIG St PAUL’S CHURCH
FEBRUARY 2011
Dear Fellow-members We are already well into 2011 and the drawing up of plans and new rotas is drawing many of us to feel that the year is rushing on! Looking forward to June we in Pilrig St Paul’s will be heading up the operation for the Tea Tent at Leith Gala so if you are able and willing to help that will be great! Please put it in your diary for Saturday 11th June. But not to get too far ahead of ourselves we have an exciting event happening on Friday 4th February. Vocal Vibes our children’s choir are putting on their own presentation of “Oliver” in the church. We have been working towards this for a long time now and we want to have the church full! We need your help! Come along and invite your friends and neighbours! It’ll be a great show! You will recall that we put a survey sheet out to all members last year. We got a response of just over 30 returns – not very good. However the information received is helping the Kirk Session take decisions regarding how pastoral care will be given to the congregation and others coming regularly to worship. At its meeting in January the Kirk Session agreed that following the January Communion we will no longer be using Communion Cards.
Elders will continue to have responsibility for pastoral care of those within their district and will visit each member at least once per year, while ensuring that those needing more pastoral support will receive visits more often. Many of those who responded indicated that they were happy to receive information and have contact from the Church on a Sunday when they come to worship. So this is an area we will look at and seek to develop in appropriate ways. I am planning to run an Enquirer’s Class possibly starting on Thursday 3rd March. If you know of anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian faith and Church membership please encourage them to get in touch with me as soon as possible. May God richly bless you and your family in 2011!
Regards John
Open Doorway We have a very committed group of volunteers who ensure we can serve tea/coffee on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also allow people to chat or sit in the Sanctuary. We would like to be able to open on other days but without more volunteers this is not possible. Please give this serious consideration and let me know if you feel you can join our group of volunteers. Marlyn
THANK YOU A note was received on behalf of Mrs Marion Davidson thanking the church for her Christmas gift. Mr & Mrs George Swanston thank the church for their lovely Christmas gift which was much appreciated. Mrs Jean Spence thanks the church for her Christmas gift. Maurice and Irene Wexelstein would like to thank the minister and congregation for the lovely flowers they received after the death of Maurice’s brother. Thank you to Pilrig St Paul's members for their best wishes and also for the parcel delivered by Eric Fisher who it is always a pleasure to have a chat with. It was good to be remembered by my friends in the congregation. With best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year to all at St Paul's. Isobel Pert Margaret and David Fraser would like to thank all the people for their kind wishes and cards on the occasion of their Golden Wedding in November. Also many thanks to the minister for delivering the lovely flowers. Margaret and Ronnie Cameron thank all at the church for the beautiful flowers received recently. Thank you so much to John and the congregation for the flowers we received. They were really lovely and managed to brighten up a miserable Winter’s Day. Many thanks also to Mark for coming with them and spending some time with us. Mary and Jimmy Rennie Mary also sent a second note thanking everyone for the kind Christmas gifts, and thanking Mark for visiting with them.
Margaret Simpson has also written twice since the last magazine: “thanking the Rev. John Tait and the congregation of Pilrig St Paul’s for the most beautiful bouquet of flowers handed to me for my ninetieth birthday. The surprise and pleasure of receiving the flowers was overwhelming and I must express my gratitude to all for such a kind gesture. Kindest regards to all at Pilrig St Paul’s Church.” “Many thanks for the lovely Christmas gift received by me from the conregation”, and wishing all her friends in the Church a very happy and peaceful New Year. Items for this section can be given or passed on to me or the minister. Either a note or email is fine. Thank you. Catriona

VOCAL VIBES – OLIVER SHOW – FRIDAY 4TH FEBRUARY AT 7.30PM Please come along and support the Vocal Vibes “Oliver” show on Friday 4th February at 7.30pm in the church. We’re all working very hard to learn lines, songs and choreography to make this a fun evening. It’s our biggest challange so far and our first staged show that we’ve done completely on our own (One Planet Future was in collaboration with Primary 6 from Lorne Primary)! We have a few special guest artistes to help us out in some cameo roles, but most of the work will be done by Vocal Vibes themselves. There is no ticket price and we’d like to fill up the church for the show. Please bring friends, family and neighbours. There’ll be a retiring collection for donations to support the work of Vocal Vibes and we’d like to raise £500 on the night. There will be refreshments in the hall afterwards and a chance to meet the cast! Looking forward to seeing you there for a great evening of singing and acting and thanks for your support. Martin Ritchie Flower Diary Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Flower Fund. If you would like to put flowers in the Church on a particular Sunday please give me a call on 554 1842 or speak to me on a Sunday. Thank you. Marlyn
SINGCHRONICITY YOUTH CHOIR
Our new Leith Churches Forum promoted youth choir, Singchronicity, will finally be launching on 1st March after a wee bit of a delay in moving things forward. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays from 1st March at Pilrig St Paul’s and there will be a cafe in the Open Doorway with soft drinks and snacks available from 3.30pm, with the rehearsal beginning at 4.15 and ending at 5.45pm. The group is going to be working on and performing a wide range of great music including classics, musicals, Gospel and contemporary pop. If you know of anyone who’d be interested in being part of this new group, please give them a leaflet about the choir (available in the Open Doorway) – it’s open to all S1-S6 secondary aged young people, male and female! We’re looking for a few people to help run a pilot of the cafe on a Tuesday afternoon – if you could help during the initial few weeks, please let me know. It’s not limited to people from Pilrig St Paul’s! Thanks for all your help and support. Martin Ritchie
FORUM CHURCHES ORGAN RECITAL SERIES Each Sunday in March there will be a soup lunch after the morning service, followed by an organ recital at one of the Forum churches. More details of the venues and dates as soon as possible, but please do bear this in mind and consider going along to one or two of these – or all of them if you fancy it! PILRIG CHORUS – A NEW CHOIR A new adult chorus is being formed this spring to bring together members of our church, friends, local community members and indeed anyone who would fancy the challenge of singing top quality music in public performances. Our first project will be the fantastic and uplifting Vivaldi Gloria and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in the church from 7.309pm starting on Tuesday 1st March. If you’re interested in taking part, please contact Martin Ritchie on HYPERLINK "mailto:martinsritchie@aol.com"martinsritchie@aol.com or 07984 466 855. THE MAGAZINE We’ve had good start to the year with lots of information in this magazine - but it doesn’t stop there so I would like articles for March by February 20th, please!
Thank you, Catriona Blackwood
