PILRIG St PAUL’S CHURCH

JUNE 2011

Dear Fellow-members, As summer approaches thoughts turn to holidays and to the Leith Festival and also the Edinburgh Festival. The Leith Festival includes our annual United Service - much appreciated by many and pointing up the long term links between Church and community in Leith - links we need to be continually developing and celebrating. The service this year is in South Leith Parish Church on Pentecost Sunday June 12th. It would be great to see you all there on that special day for the Church down all the ages - the Day when great things began to happen as the Holy Spirit was experienced by lots of people Leith Festival also involves Pilrig St Paul’s in the Concert featuring Vocal Vibes and Singchronicity on Sunday June 19th and also the Forum Outreach Committee’s “Question Time” on Tuesday June 14th. Elsewhere in this magazine you will find information about events in the Pilrig St Paul’s buildings during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2011 and beyond we are seeking God’s inspiration to make great things happen in the life of our community of Leith and in the life of the Church across all its groupings. Come along and support events in your church. Plans are moving ahead well for our Stewardship Project at the start of next session. Look out for more information as we encourage and invite you to more active participation in the life of your congregation. We need one another and God needs each one of us!

The faithful few who undertake all the essential jobs in the life of our congregation are having to bear too much of the burden! As the years pass so we are faced with needing others to help share the load! Without a fresh rejuvenation of what it means to be the Church here, the future will be very bleak. Called to be mission congregations in their parish, each church in Edinburgh Presbytery is being encouraged and required to focus their efforts more effectively in touching the lives of people in their area. We all want the Church here to continue. But it doesn’t just happen. God has given us faith and gifts to use in his service and to his glory! May the summer months be a time of re-creation for you and your family. May God bless you all!

John Open Doorway Thank you to everyone who staffs the Open Doorway on Tuesday and Thursdays from 11.00am -1.00pm. As always we could do with some more volunteers to help with this venture. If you could help once a month, please give me a call on 554 1842 . The Open Doorway will close during the 3 weeks of the Pilrig Parlour and will re-open on Tuesday 30th August. Marlyn

A POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITY TO REACH OUT TO OUR COMMUNITY? Many people pass by our church doors at around tea time 5.00pm /6.00pm. The Youth Choir “Singchronicity” rehearses in the Church on a Tuesday during this time period and volunteers staff a small café for choir members while also keeping the Church doors open. In recent weeks several interested people have come in and some have appreciated a time of prayer. It looks as if this time is a good time for the Church to be open. Would you be up for helping us be open to give opportunity for people passing by to find a moment of peace and support in the midst of busy and stressful lives? If so contact the minister Rev John Tait 554 1842.

THE MAGAZINE Thank you to the minister, and all those who have contributed to the magazine this year. Particular thanks to John Innes who prints it, Margaret and the team who make it up and distribute it, to Stuart Sime who acts as stand - in printer and general advisor, and to my husband Bill Blackwood who proof reads it..........and guess what??? Please may I have material for the September magazine by Sunday 21st August! Catriona Blackwood

Would you like to join a Quilting Group? Interested? Read on! One of our church members is a member of the Warm Hearts Quilting Group and she has passed this information on for others who may be interested. Warm Hearts Quilting Group is a group of volunteers who meet in Holy Cross Church Hall 11 Bangholm Loan on Mondays from 12 noon to 3pm making patchwork quilts using good quality recycled material. Our quilts are then donated to Charity. If you would like to join us you will be made most welcome. You don’t have to be able to sew. There are lots of different tasks involved in the process. Offers of materials, cotton, poly cotton or any lightweight materials or threads suitable are always appreciated. Contact Angela Mitchell Tel 478 0648. OPPORTUNITY TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR ST COLUMBA’S HOSPICE As you may already know St Columba’s Hospice is undergoing a period of rebuild and development to increase the number of beds and to build a world class teaching facility. The hospice shops are expanding to try and raise as much money as possible to support these projects. To this end they are looking for new volunteers.

“We are looking for people who could offer about 3 hours a week, or a fortnight at a time that suits them. They could even do a volunteer “share” with a friend! We would be delighted to have them. We may also be a useful contact for anybody connected with the church who are doing Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards who need volunteering experience. The only qualifications we need are a willingness to help and a determination to have fun! “ If you are interested pop in for a form in the hospice shop at 352 Leith Walk or phone Sarah Munro on 555 0625 or at <stcolumbas_sm@btconnect.com>

SCOTTISH STAINED GLASS SYMPOSIUM AT PILRIG ST PAUL’S

The Scottish Stained Glass symposium have booked our hall to hold their autumn meeting on Friday 7th October at 1030am. They decided to come to Pilrig St Paul’s following my presentation to them about our Daniel Cottier stained glass at their regular meeting earlier this year – mainly because it was felt that it would be great to give members the chance to see the glass in situ. This is a great opportunity for us to promote our first rate artistic heritage at Pilrig St Paul’s. We hope that we can provide a mini talk and tour of the glass so that anyone interested can learn more about the artist, the design ideas and how the glass was made. Further details in the September magazine. Martin

MUSIC at PILRIG St PAUL’S

PILRIG CHORUS NEWS

MOZART AND VIVALDI CONCERT Thanks to everyone who came along to support the Pilrig Chorus debut concert on Sunday 15th May – and a big thank you to the volunteer stewards and folks who provided sandwiches and cakes for the “do” afterwards. We’ve have had a really good first season, thanks to the hard work of the choir, and it has been great to see that the membership of the Chorus is starting to reflect our aim of building links with people living close to Pilrig St Paul’s, but not associated with our congregation.

Plans are now afoot for the autumn and Christmas season:

COME AND SING EVENT The Chorus will be hosting a Come and Sing event on Saturday 1st October from 2-6pm at Pilrig St Paul’s. This is a chance for anyone to come and have a go at singing Part 1 of HANDEL’S MESSIAH and HAYDN’S vibrant “The Heavens are Telling” from The Creation. It is a fundraiser for both the Chorus and the charity Waverley Care. More details in the September magazine! AUTUMN SEASON Chorus rehearsals begin on Tuesday 4th October at 7.30pm. Christmas concert, with carols for everyone to join in, is on Sunday 11th December at 4pm

VOCAL VIBES 2 and SINGCHRONICITY Some of you may be aware that we have two primary school choirs (Vocal Vibes 1 and Vocal Vibes 2). The older group, Vocal Vibes 2, will be presenting a joint concert along with our new youth choir, Singchronicity, on Sunday 19th June at 4pm in Pilrig St Paul’s. Please do come and support our young singers in action! Admission is free, with an opportunity to make donations to support our mission of outreach through music-making amongst young people. VOCAL VIBES 1 Our primary 3 and 4 children (assisted by some older singers!) are currently working on a wee show called “The First Kids in Space” and hope to present it to family, friends and members of the congregation at our final Wednesday rehearsal session on 29th June at 4pm in the Church Hall. Stay tuned to the weekly intimations for confirmation of this! MUSIC BUGS The Music Bugs business (who hire our halls for regular toddlers and pre-schoolers music classes on Tuesday mornings) will be holding events in the Festival Fringe. There are two workshops of singing, dancing and instrument making on August 16th and 23rd at 10.30am in the hall. Tickets are £2 available from 0131 226 0000. Guaranteed fun for all the family!

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE “TOCCATATASTIC” ORGAN CONCERTS AT PILRIG ST PAUL’S! Our organist, Martin Ritchie, will be giving two lunchtime organ concerts during the Festival Fringe this year as fundraisers for Pilrig St Paul’s. They are on Saturday 20th and Saturday 27th August, each concert at 12 noon for around 1 hour. The programme title says it all – lively and spectacular organ music by JS Bach, Boellmann and Dubois showcasing the fine qualities of our organ. The concerts are in the Fringe Programme this year, so we hope to attract visitors at the modest ticket price of £5 per head for an hour of live organ thrills! We’d be delighted to see any members of the congregation there too – you will be most welcome, and of course there’s the added bonus of being able to enjoy coffee or lunch in the Pilrig Parlour before or after the concert. AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE FESTIVAL It’s great to have this Festival back at Pilrig St Paul’s again this year with performances morning, noon and night from Monday 8th until Sunday 13th August. A detailed performance schedule will be available in church nearer the time, so hopefully you might be able to come along and enjoy a show? There are a few shows especially suitable for children this year, so maybe that would be a chance to bring grandchildren or great nieces and nephews? MOZART’S MARRIAGE OF FIGARO There will be a concert performance of highlights from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in the Sanctuary on Friday 26th August at 5pm for 1 hour, by an Italian chorus, Associazione Corale Mutinae Cantores Paolo Baraldi. The choir comes from Modena and is well connected to the family of the late opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti! Tickets available from the Fringe box office on tel: 0131 226 0000 (£9/£7)
