Principal’s welcome Thank you for taking the time to read our latest prospectus. In a competitive job market, choosing the right college and programme of study to start your career journey can be very difficult decisions. There is a huge array of choices for young people today and it is more important than ever to make informed decisions about your future at an early stage. Your career may seem a long way off but decisions made now can influence and affect your options later on. Not everyone starts at the same place or aims for the same destination, but I hope you will be reassured that whatever your existing achievements, we have a pathway to help you to achieve your ambitions. A great deal of planning has gone into the College you see today. We continue to invest in our buildings and facilities to ensure that our students are learning in a suitable environment to allow them to make the best of their time at College.

Do you want to represent your fellow classmates? You can become a Course Representative and attend departmental learner forums. This is your chance to make changes to your course and College.

The Students’ Union The Students’ Union is located in the atrium on the lower ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus. Come in and find out how you can get involved in College life. The Union run lots of activities, as well as a volunteering scheme.

FREE BUS SERVICES We realise that getting to and from College may not be very easy for everyone which is why we have funded the following return bus routes for our students: Shelley > Barnsley College (Old Mill Lane campus) Stocksbridge via Penistone > Barnsley College (Old Mill Lane campus) Old Mill Lane campus > Wigfield Farm (Animal Care/Horticulture)

The bus routes are FREE for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route will operate in the morning in order to get students into College before lessons start and a return service will be provided after lessons finish. Adam Goodwin 3D Design Student Adam Goodwin won the Principal’s Award at the Art and Design end of year show. His final design project was inspired by his hero Valentino Rossi, an Italian professional motorcycle racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion. Adam, started his journey three years ago studying Level 1 Art and Design. He is now going on to the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course at University Campus Barnsley (UCB). Art and Design Instructor Daniel Booth said: “It is inspiring to see how far Adam has come with his art, having no formal qualifications did not stop his enthusiasm and he has worked hard to achieve his goals. I am really pleased he has been recognised with this award.”

COURSE CONTENT: As an Apprentice you will be employed within a hospitality and catering establishment attending College one day a week. Topics include customer service, barista skills, preparation and cooking of food, professional bar and drinks service and food safety.

COURSE CONTENT: This course specialises in professional craft bakery and confectionery techniques. You will perfect skills in preparing and producing dough and bread products, preparing and decorating celebration cakes, chocolate decoration and the preparation and production of confectionery. The programme allows the possibility for industry visits, residential trips and work placements.

SWEET SUCCESS FOR BRADLEY Barnsley College catering student Bradley Mitchell was a runner-up in the Keylink 2014 Student Chocolatier of the Year competition which attracted entrants from around the UK. During the five-hour competition, Level 3 Professional Cookery student Bradley produced 12 handmade raspberry and white chocolate rolled truffles, 20 cherry and dark chilli moulded pralines, a truffle torte with passion fruit jelly on a praline and pailleté feuilletine base and a chocolate centrepiece with a summer theme. Bradley said: “The day was very hard work but I gained new skills and knowledge from the experience and learnt from the ideas of the other students who took part. I am very proud of this achievement and would love to enter further competitions.”

He came to College and studied functional skills in English and Maths as well as a Level 2 Apprenticeship. Coming to College has enabled Mansour to overcome his language, cultural and social barriers and has resulted in a promotion to a supervisory role at the Engineering firm where he works. Learning for Living and Work The Learning for Living and Work department supports learners with a learning disability or difficulty to prepare them for either Independent Living or Supported Employment. Each learner will have an individual/ bespoke learning plan and curriculum timetable to suit their individual needs and interests. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

College helps Connor make his mark Studying sport at Barnsley College has enabled Connor Brunt to make his mark on the international stage. Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport student Connor is specialising in developing his football skills and scored the winning goal on his debut for the English Colleges National Team against Australia. Connor receives daily training to develop his technical and tactical skills and sees a physiotherapist twice weekly to help with the treatment of injuries and get advice on rehabilitation. Connor said: “The College has an excellent reputation for sport and offered me the opportunity to combine education and football. We have been given the chance to represent the county in our chosen sport, which I am able to use on my applications for university and scholarships in the USA.”

What happens next?

Your application will be acknowledged. You will then be sent an interview date. You will also receive important information by post, including financial support and travel information.

What happens at interview?

The interview is a meeting between yourself and a tutor. It’s an opportunity to get more detailed course information. It will help you decide if this is the right course for you and also provide an opportunity to discuss all your options.

Can I change my mind?

Yes, there is no formal commitment at this stage – you can change your course choice – all you need to do is phone or write to tell us.

What if I don’t get the right grades?

Don’t panic! Contact our Information Team on Tel: 01226 216 123 and they will advise you on what to do.

The Year 11 application process Step 1 - Search

Search for a course in the College prospectus or online at either www.barnsley.ac.uk or www.ucasprogress.com.

Open Evenings 15 October 2014 26 November 2014 15 January 2015

Step 2 - Apply

Students can apply for the course of their choice from the beginning of September 2014 by completing a paper application, via the College website or UCAS Progress.

Step 3 - College interview

Students are invited in to College to attend an interview with a tutor from their chosen subject(s). Interviews usually take place each Wednesday afternoon between 3.30pm and 4.30pm, starting in November 2014.

Step 4 - College place

After the interview, students will be offered a place on their chosen course or referred to a more appropriate course.

Step 5 - Subject taster

Students are invited in to College to take part in a taster session in the subject they have chosen.

Step 6 - Enrolment

An invitation and enrolment pack will be sent out at the beginning of August 2015 giving students all the information they will need to enrol onto their course at the end of August 2015.
