HOW DOES A SOLAR WATER HEATER WORK

Solar water heating systems are a worthwhile investment, for both homeowners and the environment. Not only do they provide long term financial savings, but they also have zero greenhouse gas emissions. Solar powered water heaters have a few simple components that work together to heat cold water. These are: Types of Collectors Flat-Plate Collectors These are mounted on a roof. Flat-plate collectors have copper wires that run the length of the collector which is covered in glass. The collector is usually connected to the water tank on top of your roof. When the sun heats up the copper pipes, the hot water that results is thermo-siphoned from the tank for household use.

Evacuated Tubes This type of collector is ideal for areas where frost is prevalent. An evacuated tube consists of glass tubes that are fused on the top and bottom surfaces. The space occurring between the tubes is emptied to create a vacuum. A heat pipe (made of copper) runs along the centre of this tube that connects to a manifold which is linked to a slow-flow circulation pump. This will pump the water to the storage tank located underneath and heat the water during day time. Since the tank is insulated, the hot water may be used during the day or night. In general, evacuation tube collectors are more efficient at extracting heat from the air on humid days. They also don’t require much sunlight. The vacuum inside the tube makes it a more efficient system.

Flat Panel or Evacuated Tube? The evacuated tube is a more efficient system. It is also durable and more affordable to repair. Thermal Mixing and Water Tank When the heat rises, the hot water in the tank (located on the top of the house) is delivered from the solar collector. Sometimes the temperature may exceed 60 degrees Celsius. Therefore,to ensure that the temperature at the taps is safe, a tempering valve works to reduce the water temperature to approximately 45 degrees Celsius.

How does the system work on extended cloudy days? The sun’s energy is sufficient to provide hot water throughout the year, however sometimes on very cold days when the cloud cover is too much, your solar water heater may need help. A gas booster or electrical booster system can help greatly. Solar water heating systems are not only beneficial for the environment, but they help save you money on your energy bill.
