Feijioa’s and Lime advice

I have a friend at school who tells me she’s my friend one day and then she’s not the next day and it hurts my feelings. What shall I do? Charlotte age 8 I think you should find a new friend who won’t hurt your feelings. Real friends stick together. You will find if she keeps that up she won’t have any friends.

I’m ten and I’m a girl and I love Ben Ten. I have a Ben Ten bag and I take it to school only to have other kids punch it. It annoys me and now I’m taking a different bag to school, what should I do? Samantha Age 10 You should start taking you Ben ten bag back to school. Everyone has the right to like different things. If they hit your bag find out where there bag is and put a FART bomb inside! Sustainability Sustainable means:

Doing your bit

the ability to continue/maintain into the future

Climate means:

What the weather is doing over a long period of time.

Climates can change over time and when it does we call it “climate change. Scientists think that the average temperature of the world will go up between 1°C and 3.5°C over the next one hundred years. Climate change is more than changes to weather. Climates can affect the environment like plants, animals and all the other living and non-living (like soil, rocks, oceans, and lakes) things.

What can you do to help protect our world for the future? What changes do you think you can make at home? Turn all power off at night.....Do you turn your tv, computer, microwave, or jug off at the wall? Did you know you could save not only power but your parents will be happy to see their power bills go down. You could save a whopping $500 a year!

What are you doing? Send us an email and tell us what you are doing to help save the planet. email Kidstreehut@gmail.com

Junior Fiction Category Award The Loblolly Boy by James Norcliffe To the boy called Red, it seems the most marvellous escape he could wish for: a gift that grants him more freedom than he ever believed possible - the chance to fly, to soar with the gulls, high over the tall brick walls that have imprisoned him for so long. But this gift comes with a terrible price - and puts him in grave danger. Is there anyone Red can trust to help him? The curious Captain Bass who has strange powers of his own? The wildly unpredictable twin sisters he is strongly drawn to? In this magical, mysterious story, Red’s adventure is like a chamber of mirrors at a carnival - a dazzling and breathtaking tale.

E3 Call Home by Janet Hunt

Non-fiction Category Award

Every year in March thousands of godwits leave New Zealand and fly almost 17,000 kilometres to Alaska, where they mate and raise new godwits, and then turn around and fly all the way back to New Zealand. This is the story of two godwits whose flight in 2007 was tracked using transmitters. Millions of people watched their progress on the internet. A male bird named E3 mysteriously turned back when he reached Papua New Guinea and then he ceased to transmit altogether. What had happened to him? A female named E7, however, showed that godwits can fly from Alaska to New Zealand - right across the Pacific - a distance of 11,200 non-stop kilometres. Packed with wonderful photos, fascinating information about godwits and other wading birds, this is an enchanting story, a brilliant book for any child. A true tale to spark the imaginations of children and adults.

2) How did you learn about photography? I haven’t had any training in photography. I learnt from advice and hands-on experience from other photographers that I have met all throughout New Zealand. Facebook and Twitter has really helped me with learning about photography because I can get so much more advice and experience than I can get in little Gisborne. I also read blogs from other photographers on a daily basis.

3) When did you realise photography was what you wanted to do I always classed photography as a hobby of mine and wasn’t that serious about it until I was asked to photograph a wedding in the start of 2009, That was when I found out that I really enjoyed photographing weddings and there was a demand for natural, fun and affordable photography in Gisborne.

5) What have been some of your challenges? Transportation, as I do not have my drivers license I have to rely on my parents to drive me to my jobs. My age has been a major limiting factor too as people are a bit concerned that a 15 year old would be photographing their wedding, family or event. Another minor one has been the photo lab I used in Gisborne going bankrupt and closed down, Thankfully I had two other AMAZING photo labs take me on board. A summer wedding in Gisborne 6) What advice would you give to others who want to start their own business Go for it! Surround yourself by people who have business experience in your industry and others. They can support you and give advice. Get in with other local businesses who can recommend you to their clients and establish a good online presence using a website and social media. 8) What has been some highlights of this year? 7) What keeps you inspired and motivated? Wow! There have been so many such as \photographing Pauline Stockhausens twitter Hearing from happy customers and wedding, Photographing the Rhythm and Vines praises from others and support from New Years Eve festival and my favourite my friends and family. so far has been touring New Zealand photographing the Halogen Foundations National Young Leaders day, It is so much fun and I really believe in what they are doing!

Van Gogh 1853-1890 Vincent Van Gogh took up painting when he was 27 years old and he was largely self taught. Van Gogh painter more than 800 canvases in his lifetime. Van Gogh was inspired by the works of the impressionists, they abandoned traditional art. They worked outside instead of in studios, used pure bright colours and used rough brush strokes. Van goghs favourite colour was yellow and a lot of his paintings have a lot of yellow in them. Van Gogh never sold any of his 800 paintings while he was alive.

Tips on Van Gogh: He applied paint in dashes and swirls. He outlined objects with darker colours on flat objects. He applied paint every thickly.

Leadership A leader is someone who takes responsibility for a situation and the people involved in that situation. It’s not someone who is a bully or is bossy, telling everyone else “do what I tell you.” Sometimes when you’re a leader you have to be strong but bossy people don’t often make good leaders.

So how do you become a good leader?

1 - TREAT OTHERS THEY WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED The first step is to think about how you like to be treated – and to treat people that way. Sometimes the people you are leading will need to do things you ask – but that doesn’t mean you should treat them badly. If they disagree with you, it’s really important you still treat them with respect. The very best leaders are those who are prepared to treat everyone in their team fairly – even the ones they disagree with.
