Creating form from a datascape

In the same way geography is a factor in large scale population readings, this site has its own geographical constraints driving population density and distribution. This density begins to create it’s own geography over the natural existing landscape.

This study looks at distributing density across the site using factors of accessibility, desirability, and potential views. These driving factors begin to map information across the site creating a virtual human topography.

Combining all drivers of distribution and density begins to create a landscape, a geography, a datascape of human dwelling. This form covers the site, peaking and troughing with levels of information. A natural topography of the site accentuates the new human topography that now exceeds it.

These peaks and troughs of the datascape can be refined down to an architectural form that takes place across the site. Above is an example of a data mapping project analysing Toronto’s business districts and hubs. It too forms a human landscape of information to better understand levels of activity using the 3rd dimension.

Contrary to the outcome above, this logo L10 L10 15 15 focuses mostly on the inbetween space of the letter forms. It makes form of the voids and removes form from the solids. This is achieved in a way that represents both letters and a possible logo shape. This form achieves both the bold strength of the above logo but also a level of accuracy and detail as curves meet perfectly with straights creating intricate vertices. The surrounding box captures such ideas into a bold, true and professional representation of myself. Although not necessarily the most aesthetic of the 3 outcomes I believe this logo most accurately represents me and my professional goals as an architect or firm.

This ID was created out of focusing on the straights of the letter forms PTC. Both P and C had to be majorly altered to maintain a linearity. I created a new typeface from scratch using construction lines that kept letter forms the exact same thickness along their entire form. Small inlets or cuts are made in the centre on the P and C to make letters recognisable but keep them bold and dominant of negative or void space between letters. By minimizing inbetween space, the letter forms speak of boldness, strength and masculinity. This can accurately represent an element of my professional values but fails to speak of my attention to detail and intricacy involved in my design ethos.

MicRoTYPOGRAPHY

Beginning with the reconstruction of the letter form using the outline, this ID represents a somewhat stage-show aesthetic. By first separating letter forms into outer lines and analysing crucial intersections I was able to form connections between outer and inner letter forms. The reconstuction process also allowed me to look at the smaller and larger A R C H I T E C T U R E forms as sliding around eachother also giving PAUL CURTIN Architect Director an interesting aesthetic. Although Pbeautiful in h: 98651122 M: 0427651055 t i n . p aID u l @ pnot tcarchitecture.com its own way, this logo presentsc u ran totally suited to the architectural discipline or my personal and professional identity. I think the logo would represent perfectly a dance or stageshow company.
