PTE Online Review Supplements: Essential Collocations that Start with “A
Complement your PTE online course review sessions with your own study efforts. Expand your academic collocation vocabulary!
What are Collocations? Collocations refer to words that often go together in the English language. The word “academic,” for example, is frequently used with other terms to form something more specific (e.g., academic community, academic discourse, academic institution, etc.).
Many PTE test takers do make it a point to expand their collocation vocabulary during their review, considering its significance in the exam’s fill in the blank task types. However, most seldom go beyond memorizing synonyms and word lists. Here’s why that’s a mistake.
Collocations have established structures. Substituting one or both of its components with a synonym will either totally change its meaning or render it incorrect. For instance, we say “close proximity” to indicate the small distance between two things. Saying “near proximity” would not mean the same thing. Likewise, we say “take a picture” not “create a picture” or “get a picture.”
When you build up your knowledge on collocations alongside your PTE online review, pay attention to the structure of the word or expression. Find out if it has variations and learn the correct way to integrate it into your responses.
