To guide you more, read and follow these four simple steps. Step #1: Choose a Text The Academic Collocation List (ACL) is best suited for academic texts that contain many collocations. In choosing a text, make sure that it includes words that are often used together in a sentence (e.g., academic discourse, critical points, cognitive development, etc.) Step #2: Skim the text After you have picked a text, skim each paragraph and determine its overall idea. Doing this enables you to understand the arguments discussed in the text as well as the supporting details mentioned in each paragraph. Step #3: List down all the collocations As you skim the text, list down all the collocations that you found in each paragraph. Don’t forget to count the number of times that a collocation appears in the text. Make sure that the collocations are related to the main idea of the text. Step #4: Organize your list The Academic Collocation List comprised of 5 columns: the number of time appeared in the text, word one, part of speech (1), word two, and part of speech (2).
