Top Tips for Fill in the Blanks in PTE Reading

Fill in the Blanks is the fourth task type of the PTE Reading exam. Here’s how it works. 

There’s a text on the page with several blank spaces. Below it is a list of words that you can drag to the gaps.

You must move the appropriate words to the gaps to complete the text. Left-click the word to select it. Then, hold down the left mouse button and drag the word to the blank you want to place it.

You can also move words from gap to gap and return them to the choice box.

Make every second count. Consider the following tips during your PTE online review package sessions to ace this section of the reading exam.

1. Consider collocation Collocation refers to words that often go together to form a common phrase or expression. Here are some examples: 

Have a feeling

Make progress

Take a break

Jot down notes

The rich and powerful

The general public

Considering collocation when selecting your answer will help you narrow down your choices. So, pay attention to the words before and after the blank. Figure out if the missing word is part of a collocated expression or not. If you’re preparing with a PTE online review package, ask your instructor for pointers about recognizing collocations.

2. Determine what part of speech completes the passage Consider the words around the gap and establish what part of speech will complete the text. Then, rule out all the choices that are not the right part of speech. From the options that are left, pick the word that’s most appropriate for the sentence’s context. Use this strategy to find the answer faster.

3. Proofread the text after you fill in the blanks It’s the best way to ensure that you picked the correct words for the gaps. If the word you placed in the blank made its sentence grammatically and structurally inconsistent, then you better change your answer. Reevaluate your answers for the other gaps as well. Build up your knowledge of grammar during your best PTE online course review sessions to enhance your proofreading skills.

4. Know how you are going to be graded The Fill in the Blanks section tests your ability to use grammatical and context cues to complete a reading text. You’ll be scored based on how many gaps you were able to fill in correctly. Take note: the partial credit

scoring system applies to this task type. So, you’ll get a perfect score if all the blanks are filled correctly and you’ll get a full or partial point reduction if you commit a mistake.
