Keeping Up the P.A.C.E. Pine Tree PACE Campus has had a very productive and busy school year. From hosting annual rallies and community events, engaging our students to be S.T.R.O.N.G.E.R. and All In, to working with our community partners and adding new ways to reach our students and community, PACE is continually striving to provide intentional support to all students in an individual and holistic manner while strengthening areas of academic and personal selfdiscipline . During the Fa l l of 2 017 The PACE Garden was introduced to the students, w i t h students t a k i n g charge in watering and caring for the plants. On September 23, Pine Tree PACE SAVE Promise Club participated in the First Annual Cupcake Wars at the 4th Annual Teen Court BBQ Bash Cook-Off and Festival supporting Longview Teen Court. It was a wonderful day full of delicious food and engaging conversations about our SAVE Promise Club. The community response towards a student led anti-violence/antibullying organization that is actively making a difference and providing leadership in our school and community was exciting and very supportive. For a second year, PACE Campus hosted a National Night Out Party on the first Tuesday of October. Various community members, students, Pine Tree staff and first

responders d r opp e d in to connect with one another and speak of our community. Attendees wrote words of thanks and encouragement to our local First Responders. PACE Campus thanks Dr. TJ Farler and Dr Valerie Baxter. Say Something Week took place this past October 16th - 20th; PACE SAVE Promise Club joined with community partners: Coalition for Drug Free Youth, Special Health Resources of East Texas, Longview Teen Court, Byron Wilcott of Main Event Wrestling, and the Honorable Judge Tim Bryan, to encourage our

students to speak up and learn to be aware of themselves, others, and their environment in order to create a healthier and safer community for all. PACE Campus observed Red Ribbon Week from October 24 -31, with a self-review of each student’s “Life Goals”, engaging dialogue of actions versus consequences, and a S.T.R.O.N.G session presentation on underage drinking with Mrs. Kelli Creed of East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Students were given the facts and figures of drug and alcohol use and abuse and how those figures relate to or impact them and their age group. On November 4th, Pine Tree PACE SAVE Promise Club in partnership with Partners in Prevention Hope For Youth Initiative and Main Event P.A.C.E. Coming Events

Wrestling Boo The Bully Program hosted an Anti-Bullying Rally at Pirate Stadium. We are proud to say that the event was a huge success. This is the second year that the rally has taken place. During the entire month of November PACE observed College and Career Month. PACE students explored college and career choices. Students chose a career path they wished to pursue, looked into higher education options that offered continued learning within their chosen field, and weighed the pros and cons of each choice. Students based their preferred college choice on tuition, distance from home, the time it took to complete training/diploma/ certification, and other criteria they chose. In December PACE students were able to put their Algebra skills to the test while assisting the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Women Educators by wrapping books for children at Rahab’s Retreat. Students had to find the surface area of the book and determine how much wrapping paper was needed to cover each book before cutting the paper. Each student did an excellent job judging the correct amount and some mentioned that they had never thought of using Algebra in such an everyday activity. In early January, Principal Shalonda Adams was recognized on behalf of Pine Tree PACE Campus and Pine Tree SAVE Promise Club for participation in Sandy Hook Promise Organization SAY SOMETHING WEEK October 16th - 20th. During the week of January 22-28, 2018, PACE observed National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week. NDAFW is a national health observance linking teens to science based STEAM Capstone

facts to SHATTER THE MYTHS® about drugs! Coalition for Drug Free Youth presenter, Whitney Pierce held an interactive session on Friday, engaging the students to ask tough questions about the “Facts” they know about drugs. Start With Hello Week was observed during the week of February 5–9. Hundreds of schools and youth organizations across the United States participated in Start With Hello Week to teach students, grades 2–12, the skills they need to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness. March 19-23, 2018 was National Youth Violence Prevention Week. This is the third year that Pine Tree ISD PACE Campus & PACE SAVE Promise Club will host prevention week campaign activities. This week long national education initiative involved activities that demonstrate the positive role young people can have in making their school and community safer. The week will culminate with an anti-violence rally on Friday with representatives from Longview schools, local community organizations, and PACE SAVE Promise Club signing an anti-violence pledge, holding round table discussions on how to positively impact our community, and joining together in agreement to be the change . The rest of the 2017-2018 school year will soon pass by; the months of April and May will be full of events and activities wrapping up the year. Before we know it we will begin planning summer activities and the events for the 2018-2019 school year... until then, remember to be P.A.C.E. S.T.R.O.N.G.!

Pine Tree ISD Recognizes Board During School Board Recognition Month

Pine Tree ISD recognized its Board of Directors during the month of January in observance of School Board Recognition Month. “School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child,” said Dr. TJ Farler, PTISD Superintendent. In a climate of change and challenge, school board members develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students. Preparing today’s students to be productive citizens and the leaders of tomorrow is a tremendous task. As elected officials, school board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our students,” said Farler. “We proudly salute these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those more familiar with the needs of our community’s children and families. These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future,” said Farler. Pine Tree ISD Board of Trustees: President Frank Richards, Vice President Amy Brown, Secretary Jim Cerrato, Anthony Tanner, Adam Graves, Dr. Kerri Daugbjerg and Dr. Melanie Roudkovski.

During the presentation, the team will share with participants the steps and information necessary to host their own event. Each participant will leave with a packet that includes technology stations, lesson plans, parent notifications, invitations and a timeline for planning.

Cut prom costs without cutting fun Many people fondly remember their high school proms. But while proms make great memories, they also can break the bank. Prom can be an expensive rite of passage. A 2015 survey from Visa indicated the average American family planned to spend about $900 on the prom, with parents contributing as much as 75 percent of those costs. Spending on the prom isn’t all that’s contributing to the event’s final price tag. There’s the ‘promposal” to factor in as well as tickets, transportation, attire, grooming treatments, meals, and several other factors can add up to make prom very costly. However, those feeling the potential stress of the prom bill can explore various ways to cut those costs. Check these ways out throughout the pages of this quarter’s issue of the Pirates Treasure.

ELEMENTARY

Parkway’s 1st Grade Students - Compound Word Day

Parkway Elementary’s First Graders had an unusual lesson on Friday, January 12. It was Compound Word Day! Teachers, Instructional Aides, and even the Principals got in on the fun. Each wore a representation of a word that could be put together with another adult’s word to make a compound word. The children had to watch for “missing parts” and determine what words were being represented. This helped wrap up a two-week focus on compound words in Language Arts At the beginning of the day they just thought teachers were wearing odd things around their necks, or pictures pinned to shirt fronts, or even on their heads. Before long compound words were being shouted out around the halls of Parkway! Even some of the older kids realized what was happening and joined in.

Pine Tree ISD Transportation Department SCHOOL BUS SAFETY: Can you imagine how you would parallel park at 40’ school bus or maneuver through an offset obstacle course with only 2” of space on each side of the bus? In March Pine Tree ISD will host the East Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Annual School Bus ROAD-E-0. This volunteer sponsored event is established to allow school bus drivers from all over the region to demonstrate their skills and compete against one another. Competing school bus drivers will take a lengthy written exam that focuses on all aspects of student

transportation including state/ federal law, transportation code, education code and best practices within the industry. The second part of this event focuses on the school bus driver’s personal driving skill by requiring each to drive an obstacle course as judges score each event by assessing demerits for that event. The obstacle course consists of many events that test the driver’s skills. A few of these obstacles include; parallel parking, back up alley, right turn, offset alley, rail grade crossing, student pickup and straight line driving. On their personal time, school bus drivers practice for this event and studying many hours to be successful during competition. In a fun way, our school bus drivers receive some of the best training intheir career. This training

transcends to providing the safest environment for our students who ride the school bus. Winners from the region are provided an opportunity to compete at state competition in June.

• Subscribe to mailing lists and download deal-finder apps like LivingSocial or Groupon to find the best deals. If there’s a particular manufacturer or store that you prefer, subscribe to their mailing list, which might make you eligible for “insider” deals. • Shop early. Get a jump on prom shopping and possibly save some money by shopping early for prom wardrobes. Girls can shop when party dresses are on discount after New Year’s Eve. Waiting until prom season to shop for prom night attire can be a costly mistake for obvious reasons. Guys can shop sales as well if they want to make a splash in a custom suit. Otherwise, guys can rent tuxedos to save money.

Pine Tree ISD Deploys App to Combat Bullying February 5

Pine Tree ISD announces the implementation of a new stateof-the-art safety and bullying reporting app called Anonymous A ler ts®. The app allows students, parents and other school personnel to maintain their conf identialit y while calling attention to situations like bullying, safety concerns, student depression, drug and alcohol issues, family problems, or other situations that may warrant immediate attention by school officials. The system allows for 1-way or 2-way anonymous encrypted communic at ions bet ween submitters (students, parents or community members) and district administration and/or school staff. Users of the system have the option to remain anonymous or reveal their identity when submitting a report. How does it work? To use this revolutionary new app, students, parents or other school personnel can simply visit the Pine Tree Independent School District website and click on the “Anonymous Alerts” button or text link to submit a report expressing their concern. A nony mous A ler t s® mobile applications can be downloaded directly from the Apple, Google

HIGH SCHOOL

ACADEMICS TOP PRIORITY FOR

PINE TREE HIGH SCHOOL While Pine Tree High School promotes turning out well rounded students who have knowledge and skills in a variety of fields, academics are still number one when it comes to planning for the education of Pine Tree freshmen through seniors, administrators said.

When they are speaking of academics, PTHS administrators are talking about advanced and college level courses which allow PT students to leave for college, career or military service following graduation with the highest level of achievement they can receive. According to Bill Irvine, PTHS senior counselor, PTHS offers 18 Advanced Placement or AP courses for students while enrolled in the school. “We attempt to offer as many AP classes as possible for students,” he said. It is important to us that students who desire can work at the highest level possible so they are prepared for college or career possibilities after they graduate from PT.” While the school has long been noted for its excellence in AP offers, the administration has stepped up the game, allowing students to be well prepared when they walk across the graduation stage to go on to immediate success in institutions of higher learning. Irvine and PTHS Principal Cindy Gabehart praised the diverse course offerings at PT and said that there is enough variety that each student can find the perfect graduation plan for themselves and move efficiently through that plan towards graduation. Along with the AP course study, PT also offers 15 dual credit courses in conjunction with area colleges and universities such as Kilgore College, LeTourneau University, UT Tyler and Texas State Technical College that allow students to get a jump on their college hours while enrolled in high school. Approximately 200 Pine Tree students are earning college credits while they are still completing their high school graduation plan and some will have as many as 20 hours by the time they are on campus at that college or university next fall. “Dual credit is an amazing route for some students who already know what they want to do and how they want to get there,” Irvine said. All the while, Pine Tree is also offering a solid assortment of core classes and electives which allow PTHS students to “have the world at their fingertips” when it comes to education experiences.

PTISD’s AP Capstone Diploma Program and Class Selections

The spring semester is the time for students in grades 6-12 to complete their class selection sheets for the upcoming school year. This is an opportunity for students and parents to work with the campus counselors to explore available class offerings, graduation plans and endorsements. There are many class and program offerings including STEAM, Robotics, Math & Science, Advanced classes, and Advanced Placement (AP) classes, to name a few. The AP Capstone Diploma Program began during the 2017-18 school year at Pine Tree High School. The AP Capstone™ is a diploma program based on two AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These yearlong courses focus on developing the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills essential for college-level work. The courses are available to students in grades 10-12. A student will earn the AP Capstone Diploma by scoring a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of the student’s choice. Students will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™ by earning scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research. Campus parent meetings will be scheduled throughout the months of January and February to discuss the numerous class offerings, graduation plans, and endorsements, as well as the AP Capstone Diploma Program. Please check the PTISD and campus websites for specific meeting dates and times. For additional information about class selections, please contact the campus counselors and for information regarding the AP Capstone Diploma Program, please contact Melinda Tidwell, the Academic Dean at 903-295-5031.

Keeping Your Digital Devices Protected Every day there are new exploits hackers use to capture personal data from vulnerable computer systems. The most recent additions are Meltdown and Spectre. They get their names from the way the exploit functions. In this case Meltdown melts (not literally) security boundaries and Spectre takes advantage of a process called speculative execution. Both of these utilize vulnerabilities that have been present in modern processors since the mid 90’s, but are just now being used maliciously. If you have a device with a processor it is affected. That includes mobile phones, tablets, laptops and personal computers. Exploits like this are nothing new. In the past decade we’ve seen many new and creative exploits with names like Heartbleed and Stagefright, but what can the average person do to keep their PC secure? The easiest and most obvious is keeping your operating system up to date. Most modern operating systems will patch or have already patched for known vulnerabilities. That nagging prompt asking you to install updates? These issues are why it exists. The famously large worm attacks in the early 2000’s like Sasser and Blaster were all using exploits already patched by Microsoft. They simply relied on consumers not installing the updates to continue exploiting their PCs. Most of the larger corporations being hacked are due to inadequate server maintenance and simply not patching devices in time. Antivirus is helpful as well, but proper maintenance of your device is crucial to its security. So if you are interested in keeping your device secure, please familiarize yourself with your operating systems update process and keep applying updates. Next time you see that nagging reminder to apply updates remember why it exists and apply those updates. Melinda Tidwell, PTHS Acaddmic Dean at 903-295-5031

How to save on college housing costs College is expensive, and the costs are only rising. Scholarships and grants can help mitigate the costs of higher education, but even students who receive such aid could find themselves scrambling for ways to make college more affordable. Housing is one of the more expensive costs for college students and their families. According to the College Board, the average cost for room and board during the 2016-2017 school year was $10,440 at four-year public schools and $11,890 at private colleges and universities. And those costs typically cover housing for just the school year, which may last anywhere from six to eight months. However, there are ways for students and their families to reduce those costs. Examine your dormitory options. Many schools assign students to dormitories for their freshman years, giving students little say with regard to where they will live. However, students might have more input in their housing come their sophomore, junior and senior years. Some dorms might be more attractive and offer more amenities than others, but students and families looking to save money on housing costs should opt to live in the most budget-friendly dorms available to them. In addition, choose to live with a roommate rather than in a single room, as singles tend to cost substantially more than double rooms. Sign up to be a resident advisor. Resident advisors, or RAs, often receive free housing in exchange for living in dormitories when they

are upperclassmen or graduate students. RAs help newly enrolled or younger students adjust to campus life while also ensuring nothing untoward happens on the floors they’re tasked with looking after. Students who may want to apply for RA positions should first confirm if serving as an RA will affect their overall f inancial aid package and how great that impact might be. Live with roommates even after leaving the dorms. Due to limited space, many colleges insist dorm residents live with roommates. Upperclassmen who are moving out of the dorms and into university or off-campus apartments can save money by continuing to live with roommates. This can be especially beneficial to students who will be living in off-campus housing where amenities such as electricity, cable television and water are unlikely to be included in the cost of the rent. Commute to school. While it might not be ideal, commuting to school can save college students and their families substantial amounts of money. Public university students who did so during the 20162017 school year might have saved nearly $11,000, or $44,000 in four years. That’s money that can be used to pay tuition or finance postgraduate educations. College housing costs can be considerable. But budget-conscious students and families can save on such costs in various ways.

Would you like to help sponsor scholarships for our students?

SPORTS Exciting things happening in Pine Tree Athletics!

Pine Tree athletes are in the middle of a busy winter, and heading into even busier spring season. Boys and girls basketball are in the middle of district play with boys and girls soccer beginning their district games on Friday, February 2nd. Other sports that will start district play in the next few weeks are softball on Tuesday, March 6th and baseball on Tuesday, March 13th. Our district also hosts several events during the spring. Along with their regular pre-season games, meets and tournaments, the following groups will hold these special events. Baseball will host a varsity tournament at Pine Tree’s Field of Dreams February 22nd -24th. Track will host it’s annual Graham-Knowles track meet on Saturday, February 24th at Pirate Stadium. Boys golf will hold their annual Twisted 54 tournament March 2nd and 3rd. Pine Tree High School senior Gary Wiley has had a lot of interest from college football recruiters this year. He has received several scholarship offers including 3 division I offers. His hard work and determination is not going unnoticed. Gary recently talked with our Athletic Director Jody Berryhill about how quickly his high school years have flown by. He said one thing he’d like to tell all future Pirates is to “attack” their dreams/goals! Don’t just sit and wait for something to happen, you must work hard for it. Pine Tree GARY WILEY – Pine Tree HS Senior Athletics is super proud of Gary and can’t wait to see what his future holds.

Diagnosing the differences between PT and OT

T

he body is a complex organism that is the sum of all its parts. When a portion of the body is not working optimally, pain, lack of motion and a host of other concerns can arise. At some point in their lives, many people will visit therapists to restore functionality to a part of their body that was affected by injury. Therapists come in various types, including physical therapists, or PTs, and occupational therapists, or OTs. Some may not understand what distinguishes a PT from an OT. Although physical

therapy and occupational therapy are sometimes used interchangeably, they are actually two different, but similar, disciplines. According to St. Catherine University, PT involves treating the actual impairment, while OT helps the patient complete necessary tasks with the impairment. To break this down even further, consider the following scenario: An athlete stumbles on the field, injuring his knee in the process. While the injury does not require surgery, it is severe enough for bracing and requires that the athlete not apply pressure through walking. He visits a PT to help determine which kinds of assistive devices might remedy the situation as well as which exercises and stretches can work the knee safely so that it remains limber while healing. The OT instructs the athlete on the proper way to use crutches, canes or a wheelchair while the knee remains immobile. The OT also can illustrate how to get in and out of the shower or walk up and down stairs with the adaptive devices. While PT may be focused on treating the injury itself, OT is more likely to help the patient adapt to home and work environments to

allow for a better quality of life and help the injured person maintain his or her independence. Some OTs will do on-site assessments and help with those modifications. Despite their differences, PT and OT do overlap, and some therapists may work together to make sure there’s a seamless integration of practices. Both PTs and OTs are involved in injury recovery or in assisting individuals with life-long disabilities enjoy the highest quality of life. Both professions require meeting high education standards with knowledge of physical anatomy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some entry-level occupational and physical therapists hold master’s degrees, but a vast majority of these positions require a doctoral degree in the respective f ield. However, the schooling required can be worth it, as both fields are expected to grow considerably in the coming decades. Physic a l t herapis t s and occupational therapists can help people feel better faster and help injury sufferers maintain their independence through an injury or disability.
