Only the King of Little Things stands between King Normous and his goal of conquering the world. But little things can wield great power. In a long ago world of vast kingdoms lives a king who happily reigns over all things small. He has all he needs and doesn’t want for more. Not so King Normous. He wants to be Ruler of All the World. He gathers his armies and soon he has erased every empire and raided every realm. Or has he? Normous is enraged to learn that the King of Little Things still rules over his tiny kingdom. He sends his army to defeat this upstart, but he finds he cannot outfight or outwit a king who holds sway over the small things of the world. After all, it is the small things that keep the big things going.

Small turns out to be more powerful than big in this hilarious story about outwitting a bully. Lion bullies all the other animals until finally they can’t take it anymore. They post an ad, asking for help. One animal after another tries and fails to defeat Lion. Can no one stop him? Finally, a rabbit arrives. No one thinks that such a small animal will be brave enough or strong enough to defeat Lion. But perhaps this rabbit is smart enough?

Butler
Adorable illustrations and a soothing text depict the many ways animal babies hide.
John Butler has written more than a dozen books for children and illustrated over sixty. His books have been published in more than twenty countries and won numerous awards. He lives in England. www.johnbutlerart.com
Babies love to hide—beneath blankets, under tables, and behind chairs. And some babies are found in unexpected places. Like baby deer, who disappear in dappled spring sunlight. Or baby leopards, who scramble high in the African trees. Or baby elephants, who fade behind a forest of legs. But all babies, no matter where they are, can always be found —by their loving parents.

A series of simple questions triggers a playful, imaginative exchange between a child and his father. Papa, why can’t I fly? a boy asks. His father’s simple answer leads to another question, and then another, until the father playfully demonstrates to his son all the things the child can do. In the end the boy discovers that with a little imagination and some help from his dad he can fly—even without wings! You may also like

Moving to a new home is hard— even when you’re a robot. When Edgar’s family moves to a new town, everything seems strange and scary. The kids look different. They dress weird. They listen to bizarre music. They eat strange food. And the biggest, weirdest looking kid keeps staring at Edgar. What does he want? As Edgar soon learns, sometimes you have to rise above your fears to make a new friend. And sometimes that friend may be the last person—or alien— you’d expect.

Charlie Bumper’s worst fear is confirmed: he has Mrs. Burke for fourth grade. How will he survive a year with the strictest teacher in the whole school? Shortly before school starts, Charlie Bumpers learns that he will be in Mrs. Burke’s class. It doesn’t matter that she’s been named Teacher of the Year. He’s still afraid of her. Last year when he was horsing around in the hall, he accidentally hit her in the head with his sneaker. (Don’t ask.) How will he survive a year under a teacher who is just waiting for him to make another stupid mistake?

Getting Mrs. Burke for the fourth grade was the worst thing that could have happened to me. First of all, she’s a neat freak. My brother Matt didn’t have Mrs. Burke for fourth grade, but he told me the kids in her class always talked about her. Everything and everyone in her class has to be really super neat and organized. Neat desks, neat notebooks, neat homework. Everything. Second of all, she’s really tall, so she can see everything. Her head is up so high it’s like a lookout tower—she can spot a kid horsing around anywhere on the playground or in the cafeteria in two seconds flat. And when she catches you doing something she doesn’t like, she has this scary way of snapping her fingers at you—POW—like a firecracker going off. But the biggest reason I absolutely could not have Mrs. Burke as my fourth-grade teacher is this: SHE HATES ME!

Alison Hart Illustrated by Michael G. Montgomery
This action-packed and heartwarming story of a dog in World War I is the first book in an exciting new series. At home in England, Darling is the mischievous but much-loved pet of Robert and Katherine. But when the British military asks families to volunteer their dogs to help the war effort, they send Darling off to be trained, even though it is very hard to say goodbye. Darling goes through training along with many other dogs and is ultimately used as a mercy dog, seeking out injured soldiers on the battlefield and leading the medics to them. After saving the lives of numerous soldiers, Darling is faced with a major challenge.

made it to Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose.” “Moh-Say?” she repeated. “What does that all mean?” “It’s a fancy name for freedom,”
In 1739, England and Spain are on the verge of war and former slaves are arriving in St. Augustine, where the Spanish will give them their freedom in exchange for their loyalty. Fourteen-year-old Jem has escaped a cruel master but is now in the custody of Phaedra, a difficult and angry woman. He thought he was free, he thought he was a man—but Phaedra controls his every move and takes every opportunity to remind him that he’s still a child. And as the threat of war becomes more real, Jem starts to understand the meaning of freedom and the complex connections that make a community.
Jem said, and beckoned them toward the fort.

Three shepherds heard a voice, and they believed what the voice told them about the birth of Jesus. The unifying power of simple belief reminds us that, for different people with different feelings, there is a celebration that brings us all together. “…delightfully illustrated…simple enough for children but holds an appeal, as well, for adults.” —The Miami Herald
