TAKE A SECOND...

Readers, Myself being heavily influenced by this street subculture, I wanted to create an outlet to highlight a topic I have been immersed in for some years now. Style and creativity fascinate me as well as different individuals extending their reach into complimentary facets. Axis Magazine’s goal is to inform readers on influential individuals and showcase the way they take on different lanes of culture.

HUNGRY? LA’S crazy appetizer food destination, Fat Sals in Hollywood is a feast.

T

here are many sandwiches and great choices on the menu at Fat Sals. The go-to item for myself has to be the Fat Texas (pictured on the left). It is a sub with pastrami, mozzarella sticks, fries, chicken fingers, bacon, mayo, and honey bbq sauce. Absolute craziness in a sandwich. Fat Sals found a way to get every appetizer food and bring them together in an entrée that is an unbeatable munchie food. An often overlooked menu item are their burgers. Alike the sandwich counterparts, this restaurant stacks ingredients into a normal item and turns it into gold. Parking is slightly a struggle if you arrive at a busy hour but is well worth it. If you are in Hollywood stop by for an unregretable bite and a food coma afterwards.

OUT OF THE BOX Spotlighting San Francisco and capturing some very late night life in the city.

AXIS MAGAZINE 10

W

e arrived at the bus station in Los Angleles at around 12am and waited an hour to depart. Let’s just say we are never taking a thirteen hour bus ride to San Francisco ever again! The absolute worst and most uncomfortable ride you could take is a Greyhound Bus for that amount of time. On an enjoyable note though, San Francisco with friends and free reign

to do anything at any hour was an experience to always look back on. The city itself was great and the weather was much needed to get out of the LA heat. The same urban culture exists but has a different form to take appreciation to. The grime and grit is very apparent throughout the landscape but it was a sight to see and absorb. Until next time San Fran, it was a blast!

TAKE TH E STAIRS The 5th floor at FIDM is a hassle to get to but definitely needs to be seen.

S

tore windows are one of those things that you see everywhere but hear very little about. Whether it’s a simpler setup at the front of your favorite mall chain or an elaborate art piece spotted at a fancy department store, we don’t know much about how everything got there in the first place—how much thought and time, for instance, goes into these creations? Well, it turns out there’s a major and careers centered entirely on making these windows come to life. Commonly called visual merchandising, the job entails the creative and physical development of all three-dimensional store spaces, from the one-off mannequins you

see throughout the space to the aforementioned window displays. As you can see these windows are curated and all of them have a certain objective they are trying to capture. The theme throughout the 5th floor is “Do I have your attention?” The students had to use different design elements such as humor, motion, line, contrast, color and repitition. Much of the windows contain subjective visuals with a message on the window. Another big theme the students took on was “Under the Influence.” They were highlighting Youtube sensations and social media influencers and recreating their space in the window. Come look!

CULTURE MIGOS

igos have been playing “Bad and Boujee” lots of places lately. A month ago, they played it on tour in Lagos, Niger ia, for a massive , hyped-up crowd. Last week, they were in L.A., where they played it on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, then again at a star-packed par ty celebr ating the imminent release of their excellent new album, Culture . Last night, Migos played it at a sold-out event in Washington, D.C ., the day after Tr ump’s swear ing-in. “The inaugur ation was weak,” Quavo says, refer r ing to the relatively spar se tur nout. “It wasn’t as thick as the last house par ty, you dig? If it’s some buffooner y, some laugh shit, people ain’t pulling up. Tr ump’s laughable .” Migos are not a political act – not in any explicit sense . “Bad and Boujee” is a hard-edged tr ack about boning groupies and “cooking up dope with a Uzi.” As pop smashes go, it’s a remar kably dar k song with few concessions to mainstream tastes: no candied melodies, no silky guest hooks.

CULTURE MIGOS

“We did it the tr ap way, not the pop way,” says Offset. Takeoff chimes in: “That’s what got us here .” Despite the r ambunctious ener gy of their music – buoyant Auto-Tuned warbling, intr icate syncopations – Migos take pr ide in their wor k ethic , and so r ight now, with the biggest hit of their career s under their belts, they aren’t kicking back. They’re about to hammer out a new song. Quavo is the most char ismatic member. Takeoff is the most rhythmically nimble . Offset is the most haunted, hinting glancingly at depression with cur veball, downbeat lines (“I don’t plan on going out sad today”) that undercut his br ags. He came up with the spare “r aindrop/drop-top” hook, tr ying to expel demons he doesn’t specify: “I had some little situations going on with life , family stuff going down, so I went downstair s to record. Sometimes that’s the best time to get music off – you might be mad, make some cr azy shit.” “Bad and Boujee” was the cr azy shit that resulted. The tr ack has put Migos at the forefront of a new wave of Atlanta hip-hop talent. Migos have had big hits in the past but their latest album is really shining, allowing the member s to be thrown into many new avenues aside from music .

BILLBOARD HOT 100

With the Januar y release of their newest album, Migos has seen much success on the char ts. More than half of the tr acks on this album have been on the Billboard Hot 100 giving the trio a strong stature in music. Here is a look at the tr acks off of Culture that have char ted since the release . CHART NUMBER

uavo, known by many nicknames such as Huncho, Quavo Ratatouille, Quavo Stuntin’, Gucci’s Son, Mr. Ver sace and many more . The oldest Migo at 26, cousin to Offset and uncle of Takeoff, he willingly took the role of big brother. Moreover he paved the way for the group’s successes in music. Can most likely be heard

on the hook and fir st ver se , Quavo has been the face of the Migos by gener al concensus. His over all sound and char isma has dr awn big ar tists of different genres to him. He has been featured on tr acks with ar tists such as Katy Per r y, Calvin Har r is, Tr avis Scott, and Post Malone . Despite his recent success and accompishments his longevity in the r ap

game holds tr ue since day one . Fashion and jewelr y are major motifs for Quavo. He is seen in designer br ands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Raf Simons, and Louis Vuitton not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollar s spent on his chains, watches, gr ills, r ings, and glasses. Aside from music and fashion he enjoys spor ts

and has a histor y in spor ts. Quavo was the star quar terback at Ber kmar Highschool in Atlanta. He now has been seen playing basketball with Division One College bound athletes such as Shareef O’neal and Bol Bol sons of Hall of Famer s Shaquille O’neal and Manute Bol. Quavo is enjoying new avenues music has gained him.

ffset is the middle child of the tr io at age 25. He is the cousin of Quavo which was born in the same year of 1991. Offset possesses his own flow and style he br ings to the group with fast rhymes and catchy hooks. Offset’s per sonality is menacing and has got him into so trouble with the law. During the time of his sentence (eight months) Quavo and Takeoff advanced musically and gained a bigger audience . Although Offset slightly took a backseat being in pr ison, this fueled his hunger to come back strong. After being released he walked into his share of money collected by his groupmates. Now out for a few year s ever ything is aligning

for Offset and the Migos. In addition to the recent album Culture , he has been featured on other big name tr acks such as; Met Gala, Water Leak, No Complaints, and Lick. Music has given Offset a platfor m to br anch out be involved in new lanes. He recently modeled for Jerr y Lorenzo’s newest Fear of God collection. He showcased his per sonal flare with his jewelr y and shoe choice . Fur ther more , he and the Migos are cur rently endor ser s for huge retailer s such as Finishline and Champs. This is just the star t as Offset spits in his lines that he isn’t satisfied. Ultimately, Offset’s stor y is unique in his tr ials, bouncing back from pr ison and continuing to improve his music career.

CULTURE TAKEOFF

“” IF YOU KNOW ME YOU KNOW I’M BOUT MY CASH BLUE CHEESE 2 CHAINZ FT. MIGOS

T

akeoff is the youngest migo at age 23. He has no problem flexing as hard as his older counter par ts with money and jewelr y. Musically, Takeoff is gifted with an ear for rhythm which compliments his flow on any tr ack. With no nonsense bar s, he is more inclined to r ap and not take the adlibs and autotune as seriously as the other Migos. He did not have a ver se in the Migos number 1 hit record of 2017 “Bad and Boujee .” Offset claimed dur ing an inter view that Takeoff needed to improve , that’s why Lil Uzi was chosen for the song instead. Being left off Bad and Boujee may have been good for Takeoff. His style of r ap consists of many clever metaphor s, similies, and analogies.

For example “Fox on my body no vivica/ Look at my wr ist and its cr itical/ hold it up/ droppin the temperature.” Fox meaning sexy lady, he uses vivica to connect the reference to Vivica Fox. Takeoff likes to talk about his jewelr y being cold like ice . Moreover the watch on his wrist is flooded with diamonds that it puts his wr ist in cr itical condition. As he holds up his wr ist the room drops in temper ature due to his cold wr ist. Takeoff being 23, his choice of fashions reflects the youth today. With a mix of designer and streetwear br ands such as Off White , Bape , Supreme , and Gucci Takeoff embodies street subculture . With no slack to jewelr y, Takeoff recently spent a r umored $700,000 on his “Solar System” chain.

NAVY A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

AXIS MAGAZINE 31

AXIS MAGAZINE 32

exter Navy is a filmmaker and photogr apher. Across both mediums his aim is to create wor k that is psychedelic , cinematic and at all times holds an authentic feeling. Dexter’s career began at the age of 18 when i-D Magazine stumbled across his photogr aphs on Tumblr and asked him to star t shooting for them. Now a regular contr ibutor to i-D it was through the publication that he would meet the musician A$AP Rocky, an encounter that would prove to be pivotal to his career. Since then the pair have collabor ated on numerous projects but it was Dexter’s video of Rocky’s hit L$D that really put his name on the map, ear ning him a Gr ammy nomination for Best Video and an MTV VMA for Best Editing.

With a great sense of reference and creativity Dexter captures the Bazar 14 Lookbook. Collaging photography and creating an overall mood that hangs well together makes everything more visually significant. Not being afraid to try multiple avenues within his strengths has lead him to more ideas and opportunities.

Regarded as the project that put Dexter on the map, the “L$D” music video deserved every bit of praise it received. With a Grammy nomination and a VMA award this work is as close to a masterpiece you can get. The amount of effort and attention to detail has set the bar at the moon. It is actually two videos in one with Rocky cutting into a verse of “Excuse Me.” His reflection is seen in a mirror with no sight of a camera. It is just a body of work you have to see to appreciate.

A couple shots from Dexter’s project with Hero Magazine. He directed and edited an advertisement showcasing the recenty released Supreme X Louis Vuitton collaboration. He brings a certain vision to all his projects with intense cuts and camera movements that are unlike any other..

Dexter being multifaceted, photography comes with his filmmaking and vice versa. This video was for a Stussy X Converse campaign highlighting new products and telling the story of the Venice Beach street/skate scenes. The music incorporated in this particular video is perfection. It connects the dots with his editing and story-telling while still getting the viewer pumped for the products. Dexter’s presentation mixed with his perspective is refreshing.
