Since the “accident” of the French dip in the early 20th century, LA.’s sandwich pantheon has added many standard-bearing types, such as the pastrami, corned beef, Italian submarine, Cuban, Greek and even Vietnamese sandwiches, a claim to its diversity from Westside to Eastside. t Up & Down, the club/bar on 14th St., Travis is throwing

a typically raucous party to celebrate Rodeo’s midnight release. Through the madness the audience learns small nuggets of information about the record: Travis “worked on [Rodeo] for eight months with [his] closest fucking friends” and “90210” is his favorite song on the album and, as such, we should “pay attention to this shit.” His one explicit thank-you is to Sickamore, my onetime L.A. spirit guide, whom Travis refers to as a “bald-headed motherfucker.”

T

he industry icon and 300 Entertainment CEO

is seated at a table (liquor completely untouched) with his new fiancée, the Chinese model-turned-art consultant Xin Li, casually taking in a scene where he is easily the calmest, oldest, and most important guy in the room. One imagines he’s been in this exact same position many times before, feting the aspiring rap star of the moment at some “hot” nightclub. Cohen’s exact professional relationship with Travis is a murky one that I never end up fully understanding. Travis isn’t signed to 300, but Cohen is involved with some aspects of management bringing Travis’ manager count to something around three and the two are close.

still can’t pin Travis down, as he is utterly consumed with what’s happening right now: toasting to the greatest accomplishment of his life thus far. I get it. While Travis rages—the next day he will let his 700K-plus Instagram followers know he threw up.

I find myself almost uncomfortably close to Lyor Cohen as Rodeo booms around us.

DOCUMENTING THE DEFINING YEARS OF HIP HOP

CHI MODU


When Modu ďŹ rst met Tupac during a shoot in Atlanta for The Source magazine in 1994, he quickly won his trust and respect. This was the beginning of a relationship that would last until Tupac’s death in September 1996, when he was shot in a drive-by in Las Vegas after a leaving a Mike Tyson boxing match.


Chi ďŹ rst picked up a camera while a student at Rutgers. After honing his skills at the International Center of Photography, he landed a job at The Source, which was the deďŹ nitive magazine of hip hop culture. It was here that Chi developed relationships with the biggest icons of the hip hop movement, including Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and L-L Cool J, most of whom were not yet famous.

Tupac felt comfortable around Modu because, in Modu’s words, “I didn’t really look at my subjects as just celebrities. I saw them as young black guys like me. It allowed me to get closer and it allowed them to be comfortable and just be who they were.” This is what allowed Modu to capture the candid, unstaged, human side of this emerging superstar rather than the commercialized persona he was encouraged to portray. Instead of seeing Tupac onstage performing, we see him at home during unguarded moments, doing those commonplace things all of us do, looking young and vulnerable.


In addition to shooting over 30 cover photos for The Source as their Director of Photography, Chi was able to capture the musicians in candid, unexpected moments, due to his disarming manner and unique perspective. His photos include some of the most groundbreaking, memorable images of that era, including Tupac Smoking and Biggie WTC (standing in from of the World Trade Towers). He not only chronicled and deďŹ ned the most important phase of the hip hop movement, now a global force, he also was able to deďŹ ne the artists and show them as real people, rather than one-dimensional celebrities.

Chi’s unusual background is probably responsible for the unique way he sees and captures the world around him. Born in Nigeria and raised in New Jersey, Chi had to decide at a young age whether to return with his parents to Nigeria or stay behind at boarding school. He chose boarding school, and found himself at Lawrenceville, the prestigious prep school attended by the likes of Michael Eisner and Malcolm Forbes. With his parents on the other side of the world, Chi developed a strong independent streak, which later would manifest itself in his work.
