Spring 2014

Cheers Nesters! Welcome to our first publication. A nest is often defined as a snug retreat or refuge, a safe place, a home. For us creative gals, our nests can be found in all sorts of colorful realms. Here at Nest we love those personal niches you have all found and cannot wait to explore and celebrate them further with you. In the heart of the City of Angels, we’re surrounded by art and beauty everywhere we turn. Each month we will celebrate a woman in our great city who inspires us with her creativity, art, design, and overall zest for life, and learn about her personal Nest. This month we celebrate LA’s own Jihan Zencirli of Geronimo Balloons and how she plans to change the world one giant balloon at a time. We believe enlightenment comes from looking back at the great creative founding fathers (and mothers) of our craft. We hope you find inspiration as we explore the breathtaking photography of Richard Avedon. Thanks for joining us as we embark on this exciting journey! We are exciting to explore your Nest with you and find your creative sanctuary.

XO,

Jamie Rose Editor-in-Chief

E

ach semester at fashion school, FIDM, located in downtown Los Angeles, the 5th floor is host to a variety of window displays created by the Visual Communication students. Each semester they are given a theme and told to run with it. The results, quite often, are spectacular. This semester’s theme is nature and instructor Katherine LoPresti instructed students to build their window displays with “as much organic materials as possible.” The students work as teams to build everything from the dresses to creating the typography for the windows. The group effort pays off as the nine windows are often the center of attention for visiting parents and prospective students.

ust 12 miles southeast of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria (called “Carp” by locals) is a charming, coastal community with a pedestrian-friendly main street (Linden Avenue), mom-and-pop shops, gourmet cafés and antique stores. The pavement leads to Carpinteria’s sparkling beaches, including Carpinteria State Beach, dubbed “the world’s safest beach.” Beyond the shoreline, Carpinteria’s foothills and verdant mountains are peppered with flower nurseries, polo fields, avocado orchards and horse ranches.
