Letter from the editor KYLE SWINEHART

P

ublication Design, a ten week course at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) has helped us Graphic Design students get the feel for how magazines

are built, written for, and knit-picked every inch of the design. Publication Design put us to the test and had us create our own magazine. The magazine I designed is called SoCal, a Los Angeles based magazine covering everything from what’s hot, what’s not, where to eat next, who to see next, and all the way to the hottest products around.

Designing this magazine Has helped me realize how

much time, effort, and sweat is really put into perfecting these works of art. I have really enjoyed working on this and researching other magazines to get the feel for how things are done in the real world. This issue, the first that I have designed gave me an opportunity to reach closer towards my goals and skill levels I did not know I had within. The issue I designed was not all on my own passion, but of the class as well. With further critiques each week, all the feed back I had received was all put into my magazine to make it the best it could be. I was inspired by my former students, my teacher Randy Dunbar, and the visit we took to Los Angeles Magazines headquarters, all showing me ideas and levels of capability to strive for. I am pleased to say that you will enjoy the issue you are about to dive into and hope you appreciate the hard work I have put into this. Gratitude,

Kyle winehart S

ENJOY A COCKTAIL HOW SIX DRINKS MAY ACTUALLY BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH By: Kyle Swinehart

1.Champagne A regular 4 oz glass of this bubbly beverage has only 85 calories. That’s 15 calories fewer than the same size glass of wine and between 15 to 100 calories less than a 12 oz bottle of beer.

2. Martini While many martinis have the reputation for being fat and calorically rich, this does not mean you have to avoid this drink altogether. Simply pick the right ingredients and sip away. One healthy version is the sour=apple martini. Combine 2½ oz of sour mix with ¾ oz each of sour apple liqueur and vodka. Garnish with a small slice of apple and you can enjoy a cocktail with around 160 calories.

3. Vodka and Soda Your standard vodka and soda mixed beverage typically comes in at over 200 calories, but with a few swaps, you can craft a healthy cocktail that has less than 100 calories. Mix together 3 oz of your favorite vodka with a diet flavored carbonated water or a diet lemon-lime flavored soda.

4. Gin and Tonic

If a gin and tonic is your go-to drink, with a few tweaks you can enjoy this cocktail while still sticking to your diet plan. A standard 4 oz gin and tonic composed of 1 oz gin and 3 oz tonic comes in around 100 calories. If you are looking to make this drink even healthier, switch out the tonic for a diet tonic. When crafted with diet tonic, a 4 oz glass of this drink has roughly 35 calories.

5. Fizzy Lemonade Nothing tastes better on a warm summer night than an ice-cold mixed drink. You don’t have to put the tequila on the back shelf during your diet with this version of a healthy lemonade drink. Mix together ½ oz of tequila, ½ oz of vodka and 1 tsp of agave nectar in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a glass with 2 oz of diet lemon-lime soda and you have yourself a fizzy lemonade tequila drink that is light on the calories.

6. Mojito Mojitos are loaded with calories thanks to the abundance of simple syrup in the drink. The secret to making a healthy mojito is switching out the sugar for a healthier option, honey. Craft this feel-good drink by muddling one sliced lime and 2 tbsp of mint leaves with a morter and pestle. Combine ½ tsp of honey with 2 oz rum and 4 oz of club soda until honey is dissolved. Add in the mint mixture and pour into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and some extra mint and you have a 150 calorie mojito.

TRAVEL THE WORLD AND BACK Tips and must do’s when venturing Dubai

found my little piece of heaven in Taghazout and easily could have stayed there for months, but it was time to keep moving. After a great first experience hitchhiking, I decided it was now going to be my main transportation around Morocco. I hitched my way up north to the ancient port in Morocco called Essouria. It took many short rides and little more waiting than the first time but it made it all the more interesting. I spent a few days in the town of Essouria just exploring. It was nice to be back in a city again after living in a village for a few weeks and I was back to hostel life as well. It was refreshing to be living with travelers again and have a common language. Nothing really exciting happened here, just spent most of the days sitting at the port with some mint tea watching the daily catch roll in.

ach semester at fashion school, FIDM, located in downtown Los Angeles, the 5th floor is host to a variety of window displays

created by the Visual Communication students. Each semester they are given a theme and told to run with it. The results, quite often, are spectacular. This semester’s theme is nature and instructor Katherine LoPresti instructed students to build their window displays with “as much organic materials as possible.” The students work as teams to build everything from the dresses to creating the typography for the windows. The group effort pays off as the nine windows are often the center of attention for visiting parents and prospective students.

KateU 7things you didn’t know about America’s top model

By:Mark Kirby Photographed by Terry Richardson

T

he past fifteen months, Kate Upton has melted YouTube, transformed her Twitter feed into a product-placement bonanza, sparked a series of censorship controversies, acted in a couple of movies, made her Saturday Night Live debut, and—this part’s almost quaint—landed her first Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover. We will allow that we’ve enjoyed the show. Now, with a little help from 19-year-old Kate herself (and with a goal of helping aspiring imitators everywhere), we’ve boiled her playbook down to these Seven Habits of Highly Effective Internet Bombshells.

SoCal 24 September 2013

Upton SoCal 25 September 2013

ateUpton 1

Turn on camera. Any camera. Shake body. Repeat. It all started last April with “the Dougie,” a spontaneous bit of jiggling at a Clippers game that found its way onto YouTube and pretty much launched the Kate Upton Phenomenon. She practiced for weeks in the mirror before her big moment, right? “No! That was my first Dougie,” she insists. The “Cat Daddy,” a twenty-second gyration performed in just a bikini, followed this spring (and was then temporarily yanked from the site for a “community guidelines” violation).

2

Never bury the lead.

Our interview gets going with a tame icebreaker of a question: What’s the most exciting thing you’ve done since becoming massively famous? Kate’s immediate response: “For the GQ photo shoot, we were on that ride where the seat spins while the actual ride is spinning, and I’m wearing a one-piece. And all of a sudden the whole entire top falls off! I’m holding myself, laughing, turning bright red, but a lot of people are watching, so they kicked us out of the Santa Monica Pier—it was so embarrassing.” Pause, then the kicker: “You wouldn’t think that would happen with a one-piece!”

3

Create faux controversies...

Being a bombshell means constantly eyeing the line between good, innocent fun and toohot-to-handle—and then occasionally crossing it. (Who, me?) A Carl’s Jr. ad in which Kate experiences carnal levels of pleasure while eating a sandwich caused an outcry; an early cut of a Zoo York commercial featuring her running in a sports bra was too much even for MTV. And her costume in the trailer for the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges—a white coif, some rosary beads, and a wispy black “nun-kini”—was racy enough to provoke the ire of the Catholic League. “I can see why the Catholic Church would be upset with me,” she says. “But it was just for fun, and I try not to

Savvy bombshells know how to combine sexiness and naïveté 4 ...including making headlines

about flirting with both Jets quarterbacks.

Mark Sanchez: Spotted bearing gifts at Kate’s apartment. Tim Tebow: Caught chatting up Kate at an Oscar party. Kate’s sole comment on the looming quarterback controversy: “I’m going to be less emotionally involved this year.”

6

Emphasize your wholesome background...

Savvy bombshells know how to combine sexiness and naïveté in a way that somehow makes ogling them seem like the most innocent thing in the world. To get it right, you need a certain backstory, and Kate couldn’t have a better one. Good girl? She grew up in a traditional, all-American family:

5

Use natural talents to dominate the marketing universe. Having 370,000 Twitter followers (safe to say: mostly men) makes Kate America’s Premier Spokesperson for Dude-Friendly Products. A quick stroll through her Twitter stream has her playing Ping-Pong with Jason Pierre-Paul (on behalf of AXE body spray), hanging with James Harden and Kevin Durant (to promote Skullcandy headphones), and joking around with Justin

Dad’s a high school athletic director; mom stayed home with the kids. And though Kate grew up in Florida, she was born in the deeply conservative southwest corner of Michigan, where her uncle, Fred Upton, has been a Republican congressman for twenty years. God-fearing? Kate has two tattoos: a horseshoe on her wrist and a small cross on the inside of her finger. “You have to think hard with a tattoo,” she says. “What will I love for the rest of my life?” Horses and Jesus seem like safe bets.

FROM ROCKS AND SAND TO TRASH AND SAND BAGS by:

Kyle Swinehart

Broad beach, a beach full of beauty, rocks staggering the cliffs protecting the beach and waters from trash and run down hills has transformed into something that we all have doubted to come. After many years of harsh weather, less and less renovation, and more people swarming the beaches has crashed into something painful for the eye to catch. Broad beach once beautiful, is now covered in trashed, dirt, and less sand and rocks. The beach has recently shot up in popularity, but just as quick shot back down with the amounts of trash covering it.
