Sung Jun Park Korean football player turned model, maybe the most iconic model you don’t know.

In one word, he’s returning home with glory. Model Park Sung Jin who is breaking records in the Korean modelling world since he was in the shows of Hermes, Raf Simons, John Galliano, Kenzo and appeared on the list of models.com. He was on the stage of Raf Simons where no Asian model had ever been on. We met model Park Sung Jin who walked down proudly the runway and returned to Korea. With his brave and straightforward way of speaking, will he also joke around? Sometimes, people talk behind his back, but even if it’s just a little, we hope this interview full of his sincerity will resolve the misunderstandings. The star of Bottega Veneta’s spring-summer 2015 advertising campaign, Korean model Sung Jin Park is effortlessly chic for a new fashion editorial from Esquire Korea. Shot for the magazine’s June 2015 issue, Sung hits the studio with photographer Kong Young Kyu. Embracing conceptual looks styled by Choi Kyung Won, Sung is pictured in fashions from brands such as Hood By Air, Lanvin and Givenchy. Q: Hello. Please introduce yourself. I’m fashion model Park Sung Jin. I was born in 90 and I’m 24. I left Busan for Seoul and I worked as a model. I’m currently living in New York. Q: You were in the 2014 Spring Men’s Collection. You’re a model who is receiving attention in the Asian model world. How do you feel about that? I think Korean people don’t really know about that. I worked in New York, Paris, Milan for two seasons in a row. I’m setting a new record for the Korean model world, but they don’t really know about it, so I was a bit bitter about it at first, but I’m okay with it now. Q: This must have been the reason for you to work overseas after working in Korea. At first, I had this vague idea that things would turn out well if I’d avance overseas. I was a bit tired of working in Korea, so going overseas was a mean to escape. I think I rationalized it with the vague thought that I would do well. When I think about it now, it seems that it was only a matter of good timing and having luck on my side. Q: I’m curious to hear your definition of a top model. If I look at the international scene, I’m not a top model, but it would be someone whose name is known among people in the fashion field, someone who receives positive reviews or get complimented. Q: What was going through your mind while you were doing the Hermes and the Raf Simons shows? It’s really game over. (laugh) Male models, when I come back to Korea in July, August, be nervous. (laugh) I had thoughts like that. I don’t get nervous easily, so I check to see who came to the stage and when I turn back, I mumble sometimes. I think a lot. Continue The Interview p.25

We were just normal kids that were not so excellent at what society wanted from us at that time.

Q: What would like to try if you weren’t a model? I’d like to try being a florist. I really like giving flowers as gift, but I never really tried to put a bouquet together. Each time I get one, I want to put it together, so I’m interested in being a florist. Q: It’s something I read on SNS. You wrote “today’s nuisance will become tomorrow’s joke”. It sounded like there was a story behind it. I’m not old, but it’s something I’ve felt as I’m living my life. What you worry about finds its resolution one day and as time goes by, it can be something you’re able to laugh about. Other people will probably feel the same. For instance, no matter which big problems come my way, I must overcome them and keep going. For instance, anyone can spill water and worry about what to do, but you forget about it after a few hours. It’s exactly the same. Q: How would people around you describe you? People I’m close with really like me. As for other people, I don’t know if they think that I have no common sense, but I’m very gentle. I take care of people. People I’m close with rely on me and I’m more gentle, funny and playful than people think. It seems that my personality divides people. That’s why I can get hate, but I don’t really care. Q: How would you describe yourself? My personality is still incomplete. I think I also say a lot of presumptuous stuff. Also, I think I’m a model who represents Asia. (laugh) You must have met so many people while working overseas. I’m close with designer Neil Barett. iise is a fashion brand started by two second generation Korean-American brothers that combines urban tastes with traditional Korean influences. We believe that combining elements from the past with inspirations from the present allow for progression into the future.

STORY It started when my brother and I visited Korea for the first time since our early childhood in late 2011. Born and raised in New Jersey, we were exposed to our Korean heritage in small doses here and there but mostly through food. Rarely did we see any of the traditional art, design, architecture, or anything other elements of the culture this fascinating country had to offer. We visited an area known as InsaDong for the first time, a tourist attraction filled with traditional arts, crafts, food, clothing, and even buildings. It was there we saw a Buddhist Monk wearing traditional clothing and rocking an old fabric sack-like bag(things that haven’t changed in hundreds of years) walking down a street next to both traditional Korean style homes and also modern, more western style skyscrapers. The sight of seeing something so unchanged from the past juxstaposed with sleek skyscrapers in one of the most technologically advanced cities in

and also how there weren’t any buckles but hand knotted straps instead. We had recently also learned about a traditonal Korean organic dyeing method that was also very natural/organic and decided to combine all these experiences into one. And that’s when IISE began. The duality of our upbringings as second generation Korean Americans and also the experiences we had travelling all over our native country is what inspired us to start this brand. Like most Westerners, we also knew very little about Korea aside from the kpop, korean dramas, and electronics they produce.

The farther away, the closer the home becomes.
