THE GRADE IS IN THE DETAILS. In addition to the quizes and midterm, your final presentation is 70% of your grade. Be certain your presentation is professional: Your pages clean, free of misspellings, overlapping type, lack of typographical finesse. Do not add drop shadows, backgrounds or any other meaningless post modern dingbats that do not serve your presentation.

The portfolio piece will be both a print and PDF project. The print version should be 8.5 x 11” vertical with some kind of binding on the piece. The essence of the portfolio project is a “branding” of your graphic design. Each selection should be labeled as to the “kind” of graphic design assignment it is. The sections include logo design, advertising, book design, editorial design, poster design among others. You may identify these sections in any style and graphic conceit you like, but the piece should “feel” to be the work of one graphic designer. The portfolio should be bound, in any manner you choose. You will also produce a PDF version of your portfolio, which will be presented on the last day of class. This PDF will be uploaded to a “magazine” style website where you will present your portfolio to fellow students and guests.

Design 30% } The consistency of your portfolio is paramount. It should feel like the work of a single designer with interesting and broad strokes as a designer. The sections should have consistent elements that create a infrastructure to your portfolio. Watch for fractured design and lack of brand in your work.

A business identity project this design challenge is to create a business card and resume for yourself. In addition, create an email signature that is part of this brand. Branding, by definition is not logo design, but a statement about your abilities and work. This is accomplished, on a graphic design level, by a consistency of typography, colors and space, in essence the design. It is the consistency of this core idea that makes up the company, driving it, showing what it stands for, what it believes in and why they exist.
