An extraordinary story began with exceptional care.

Mike, 39, had a heart attack while he was driving to the hospital. A nearby nurse saw it happen, broke Mike’s car window and got him to the ER. Within the hour, Mike was in recovery with a stent in his heart. And within a few weeks, thanks to a personalized rehab program and follow-up care, this young and active dad was back on his feet. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

W

What better way to close out DCPA Broadway’s 2014/15 season than with the much anticipated return of one of Denver’s all-time favorites, Wicked. From its first trip to the Buell in September of 2005 through this fifth engagement, more than half a million theatre fans will have had the opportunity to experience this uniquely stunning musical phenomenon right here in Denver. I also am pleased to announce that Denver is the first city in the country to host the show for the fifth time — a true testament to our passionately supportive audience. Thank you. I hope that you have had the opportunity to join us at the Buell for at least one or more of the fantastic musicals that have come through town over the last nine months. Pippin, Kinky Boots, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Motown The Musical were just some of the highlights of this season. If you are a subscriber and had the chance to see all of the aforementioned shows — THANK YOU for your support, and I hope you have enjoyed the season. As I hope you have heard by now, we have a very exciting new season coming up in 2015/16. All seven of the musicals that we will present on our subscription package will make their regional debuts — never before seen in Colorado. Starting in September, Matilda The Musical, Roald Dahl’s tale of a precocious five-year-old will play the Buell. We are proud to host our 11th national tour launch this October with the

compelling new American musical If/Then starring Idina Menzel. Madcap mayhem comes to the Garner Galleria Theatre at the end of October with Murder for Two, the Off-Broadway musical hit. A Christmas Story, The Musical, based on the hit 1983 film of the same name, plays the Buell for two weeks over the holidays in December. Last year’s Tony Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, arrives at the Buell in February. Disney’s Newsies, inspired by the film concerning New York City’s real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, comes to the Buell in April. We then wrap up the season in July with the smash hit Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, playing the Buell. Alongside these exciting new productions, we also will bring back some of Denver’s favorites — Disney’s The Lion King, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Riverdance and once among them. Whether a drama or a comedy, a musical or a play, theatre has the power to entertain and inspire. Hearing a great story told on stage together with family and friends is a truly wonderful and unforgettable shared experience. Thanks for sharing those experiences with us here at the DCPA. My best,

DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL BY JOHN MOORE

O

On April 24, nearly 5,000 students from 70 schools converged on the Denver Performing Arts Complex for the 31st Denver Public Schools Shakespeare Festival — the oldest and largest of its kind in the nation. Students ages 4 through 18 performed more than 640 short scenes, dances, soliloquies, sword fights and sonnets. “There is nothing else even remotely on this scale anywhere else,” said Michael LoMonico of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts has long supported this annual “Shakesplosion” by offering the use of facilities such as The Ricketson Theatre. But this was the first year the DCPA joined the DPS Foundation as a full partner and co-presenter of the festival. DCPA Director of Education Allison Watrous said it’s a partnership that makes perfect sense. “We are the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, in the center of downtown — and this is our school district,” she said. “The DPS is one of our greatest partnerships already, so if we can be a champion for them, that’s what we want to do. Especially for those schools that do not have arts programming due to budget cuts or time constraints, it’s great that we can support this program.”

Newlon Elementary School office manager Devin Seligsohn worked for six months preparing 15 third-through fifth-graders for their five minutes of glory: Presenting two short scenes and a dance from The Taming of the Shrew. And it was worth every millisecond of it, said their teacher, Jessica Quiñónez. “They learned how to act and how to become their characters. But more important, they learned how to be on a team together, and they learned how to embrace each other’s different cultures,” Quiñónez said. “Everybody is different, but we all came together for one goal.” Added DPS Foundation president Kristin Colon: “We are deeply grateful to the DCPA for its partnership. It has been incredible to see such strong participation and support of Denver’s students participating in such an impressive event year after year.” To see our full coverage of the festival, including stories, photos and video, go to denvercenter.org/news-center

THE WITCHES OF OZ DELIVER A

WICKED HIT

The National Touring Company of Wicked | Photo by Joan Marcus 2015

BY TERI DOWNARD

O

One hundred and fifteen years ago this year, author L. Frank Baum, wrote a charming book called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that became a children’s classic. The book was turned into a stage musical a year later (one such production is slated for the Buell next February) and begat another great classic: the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland played a girl who, after a close encounter of the tornado kind, found herself in a strange and mysterious land. Dorothy was her name and all she really wanted was to get back home to Kansas. The film’s iconic characters and images have become so deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness that psychologists use the movie as an archetype of the hero’s journey. Like Dorothy, all we want, it would seem, is to find our way back home. The next Oz-ian incarnation came along in 1972 when a sleek version of the story called The Wiz, featuring an all-black cast, opened on Broadway. It ran for 1,672 performances and was later made into a movie starring Michael Jackson in his only theatrical role. Then, in 1995, strident political satirist and author Gregory Maguire wrote a Gargantuan and immensely popular fantasy novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. In an ironic twist — everything in Oz seems to have an ironic twist — the book examines, among other things, the nature of good and the nature of evil. Maguire found them alarmingly and inextricably entwined.

12

denvercenter.org

Then the adventures in Oz morphed once again, this time into a stage production adapted from Maguire’s book. Its latest life form is that of the Tony Award-winning musical by composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell) and librettist Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “thirtysomething”). Wicked tells a tale that is about as far removed from Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz as the Emerald City is from Wichita. The show’s dark, witty, sophisticated charm made it the hottest ticket on Broadway. Glinda, the good witch is still there, but what, the musical inquires, is goodness after all? The main action revolves around Elphaba, the so-called wicked witch, (named by Maguire as a derivation of L. Frank Baum’s initials). Elphaba proves the popular adage that, indeed, it’s not easy being green. Born a lovely shade of jade, she is misunderstood, shunned and persecuted. While this naturally takes its toll, the question remains: is she evil? The answer is as ambiguous as her name. Elphaba and Glinda’s unlikely friendship illustrates the fact that it’s not simple trying to figure out which witch is which. “The idea behind Wicked is that things are not as they seem,” notes book-writer Winnie Holzman. “What you think you know, you don’t really know. It is the premise of the novel that you know certain things, but you don’t know the deeper story.”

— COMPOSER STEPHEN SCHWARTZ

The same notion drew composer Stephen Schwartz to the project: “I’m often attracted to an idea that takes a familiar story and spins it, looking at it from another direction, like Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I like it when I see things like that, and I like to write them. For me, if you take a familiar story — whether it be the Book of Genesis or The Wizard of Oz — and you come at it from another point of view, the tension between the audience’s preconception and the approach you’re taking to the story adds an extra level of response, plus it helps to clarify the points you’re trying to make. “The idea of taking what is one of the iconic villains of American culture, the Wicked Witch of the West — so much ‘the villain’ that we don’t even know her name — and looking at it from her point of view, that seemed to me a brilliant concept. It was clear [that] a show about her could explore some of my favorite themes: the difference between surface appearances and what’s really going on underneath, how life is more complex and has more ambiguity than we tend to be comfortable with and, certainly, than our public discourse admits to.” Schwartz also found the whole idea inherently musical. “Oz is a fantastical, larger-than-life setting full of characters who almost demand to sing,” he said, “and the witch herself is so full of big emotions — rage, ambition and longing — the idea was screaming to be a musical.” In addition, tucked into this timeless tale is enough eye-popping technical wizardry in Eugene Lee’s award-winning sets to keep everyone this side of Oz happy. Yet beyond the show’s infectious score and mind-boggling sets is a thoughtful universal theme. Actor David Garrison who played the Wizard in Denver’s first tour wisely suggested: “There’s a Green Girl in all of us…. Everyone has felt like the outcast at one time or another. It’s part of the show’s broad appeal. It’s not a children’s show, but kids enjoy the fantasy of it, adolescents get the love story and adults see the political allegory. “This show is like a rock concert every night. It’s very heartening to see that. It’s what theatre does best.” Teri Downard is a Denver-based writer and contributor to Applause magazine.

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY:

IF/THEN Tony Award winner and Broadway superstar Idina Menzel will launch the national touring production of If/Then in Denver from October 13-24. Best known for her Broadway performances in Wicked and Rent, voicing Elsa in Frozen, and her recurring role on “Glee,” If/Then was written specifically for this Broadway powerhouse. This contemporary new musical follows two distinct storylines in the life of Elizabeth, a city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in the city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits into two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance. “I look forward to having audiences discover and embrace If/Then,” said producer David Stone, “and to give Broadway fans across the country the unique opportunity to see a genuine superstar at the height of her powers, in a role that was literally tailored for her.” “If/Then is especially meaningful for me because I had the opportunity to develop it for several years with the creative team, whom I have come to consider family,” said Menzel. “I’m so thrilled to launch the show’s national tour [in Denver] and to send it off across the country and around the world.” Tickets are currently available to 2015/16 subscribers. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ 10th annual Women with Hattitude luncheon was bursting with attitude. More than 550 guests set an all-time record of $60,000 to benefit the Women’s Voices Fund, which furthers the work of female playwrights and directors.

with

WOMEN HATTITUDE

Guests previewed spring fashions at the Macy’s Style Salon before moving to the Seawell Grand Ballroom. They enjoyed lunch by Epicurean, select songs from Annie and welcome remarks from the DCPA’s new President & CEO Scott Shiller, who challenged all attendees to let women’s theatrical voices be heard. The day culminated in the signature Macy’s Parade of Hats. Led by 2014 Bobby G Award winner Abby Noble who sang “Popular” from Wicked, more than 50 lovely ladies were tapped to walk the runway and show off their incredible hats. As the single largest contributor to the Women’s Voices Fund, all Hattitude guests have helped the DCPA produce 26 plays by women, employ 20 female directors and commission 16 female playwrights. We’re beginning to hear that female voice loud and clear.

Wells Fargo has an important stake in the present and future of three key “audiences” — its customers, its communities and its team members. CUSTOMERS

Wells Fargo’s vision is to help its customers — individuals and businesses — succeed financially. It does that by satisfying all of its customers’ current and long-term financial needs with a full range of financial products, services and advice. It also provides service when, where and how its customers want. Wells Fargo has about 170 stores in 65 Colorado communities for face-to-face meetings. Customers can conduct routine transactions such as withdrawing cash and making deposits at more than 12,500 ATMs across the country including 275-plus in Colorado. And through online and mobile banking, Wells Fargo customers can quickly and easily check balances, reconcile accounts, transfer money, pay bills and more. COMMUNITIES Equally important is Wells Fargo’s role of a committed corporate citizen. This commitment is based on the belief that Wells Fargo has a responsibility to help build and maintain strong, healthy communities. To that end, the company provides monetary contributions, team member volunteers and in-kind donations for a wide range of community organizations and causes. In 2014, Wells Fargo donated more than $7.1 million and its team members logged more than 30,000 supporting nonprofit organizations throughout the state that serve Coloradans’ civic, educational, human service and cultural needs. “Helping maintain strong communities has been an everyday part of Wells Fargo’s business since we opened our doors 163 years ago,” said Frank Newman, Wells Fargo executive vice president for Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. “The DCPA is a local treasure and one of the premier theatre organizations in the country. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such outstanding locally-produced plays and Broadway touring shows that enrich our community and serve as a major part of downtown Denver’s cultural appeal. Our long-time support of the DCPA is one small act, yet one we hope makes a big difference to the community.” TEAM MEMBERS At the core of Wells Fargo’s Vision & Values is the belief that its people are its competitive advantage. Wells Fargo is committed to being the employer of choice by maintaining a diverse, inclusive workplace that embraces and celebrates differences and by offering life-long career opportunities and outstanding benefits. Wells Fargo has nearly 6,300 team members making it one of the largest employers in the state. Wells Fargo is proud to give Colorado its best!

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is such a powerful driver behind the vibrancy and growth of the arts in Colorado. The social and educational benefits of the arts are both important and proven. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is committed to developing young people in Colorado, as well as across the United States and globally. PwC is honored to support DCPA — the arts broaden the horizons of our people and our clients. Moreover, our involvement with DCPA strengthens our commitment to comprehensive education and literacy of young people in our community. In addition to supporting the arts more broadly in Denver, one of PwC’s strongest tenets is service to our communities. Our Rockies Market leads the firm in the number of service hours per employee it commits to advancing youth education and financial literacy in the US. One of the ongoing volunteer activities that helps us accomplish this is Power Lunch — a partnership with the Denver Public Schools Foundation and Mile High United Way.

For the past two years, we have proudly partnered 40-50 PwC volunteers annually with a classroom of third grade students at Columbian Elementary in Denver. The goal is to build relationships through reading and help each student reach reading proficiency by the end of third grade. We partner two volunteers with each student, reading to that student weekly for 45 minutes throughout the entirety of the school year. PwC Tax Director Nina Nelan was nationally recognized with a Daily Point of Light Award in early 2015 for her work as PwC’s Power Lunch Coordinator and as a volunteer/ reading buddy. “The opportunity to participate in programs like Power Lunch is why I returned to PwC to continue my career. I was inspired by the actions of our local partners and encouraged by how much support the firm provides us to give time and money to organizations and causes that are meaningful to us, especially the educational development of Denver kids.” It is Nina, and people like her across the organization, that drives PwC’s unwavering youth education and financial literacy commitment. And it is the DCPA’s commitment to arts education and training that serves as a compelling reason to partner with them. PwC is proud to support the DCPA as an arts purveyor, teacher, visionary, and inspiration in our local community.

Always Best Care Senior Services is committed to supporting the vibrant cultural environment created through the programs at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). Always Best Care’s comprehensive client assessment and care planning process focuses on the personal interests of each individual client. Its compassionate staff provides safe transportation, transfer assistance and companionship services that allow clients to maintain their independence. Customized outings to events at the DCPA, museum visits, art classes and other social engagements are important to preserve the quality of life the clients so enjoy. “We feel that we share common goals and objectives with the DCPA and are proud to support its events and education programs,” says Erin Nichols, owner and president of Always Best Care Senior Services. “It is important to us to maintain a connection to the community and to be culturally engaged. The Denver Center truly enriches the lives of our clients, their families and our staff.” It is Always Best Care’s mission to provide high quality, client-centered home care and to go beyond what is expected. The staff wants to help families make informed decisions about senior care and guide them through the complexities of options to design solutions that are specific to their unique needs. “Our caregivers are carefully screened and trained to provide professional and compassionate care,” says Nichols. “There is a lot of trust involved when you invite a stranger into your home to take care of you or your family member. We understand this, and make every effort to let our clients know that they’re in good hands and receive the very best care.” Over the past year, Always Best Care Senior Services has expanded its network and is one of the largest and fastest growing senior care franchises in the Denver area. Five locations with more than 250 employees are serving Denver’s Front Range communities, including Denver, Englewood, Littleton, Lakewood, Boulder, Castle Rock, Broomfield, and surrounding areas. It also is one of the nation’s leading providers of non-medical home care, skilled nursing, and senior housing placement services. In addition to the DCPA, Always Best Care is a proud supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Central City Opera and Project Cure. LIFE IS A STAGE… Enhance your next act with outstanding care from Always Best Care Senior Services. For more information on how Always Best Care can support you or your loved ones, please call 303.952.3060 or visit www.alwaysbestcare.com/ denverwest.
